I live on the cumberland plateau in tennessee and today while I was fishin i saw a tan bodied duck with a solid black head. I want to know what kind of duck this is. I cant find anything similar lookin on the internet so any info from you guys will be greatly appreciated.
That's a puzzler. Sorta sounds like a ruddy duck male but there would be a distinctive white cheek patch. And I don't think Tennessee would be their winter range. Hmmmmm.
Might be an immature red-breasted merganser migrating through your area from Canada headed to the coast but he would definitely be behind schedule.
Immature Lesser scaup maybe? I dunno...
thanks for the hel. and i have saw mergansers and wood duck in the pond before
Problem with our "immature" theories is the lateness of the season. Birds should be all feathered out by now.
Could be I am immature... Good point OH
ok got a closer look at it today and the body is actually a dorker grey color
I'm guessing it is a hen scaup (a.k.a. bluebill). Heads aren't really black but they can appear darker than the body.
ok thanks for the help. is there a reason why it the only one im seeing or is that common
