need to know a duck breed

Uploaded on January 18, 2013

I live on the cumberland plateau in tennessee and today while I was fishin i saw a tan bodied duck with a solid black head. I want to know what kind of duck this is. I cant find anything similar lookin on the internet so any info from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

That's a puzzler. Sorta sounds like a ruddy duck male but there would be a distinctive white cheek patch. And I don't think Tennessee would be their winter range. Hmmmmm.

Might be an immature red-breasted merganser migrating through your area from Canada headed to the coast but he would definitely be behind schedule.

Problem with our "immature" theories is the lateness of the season. Birds should be all feathered out by now.

I'm guessing it is a hen scaup (a.k.a. bluebill). Heads aren't really black but they can appear darker than the body.
