ATV Gear Review: Bosski 1600 AL ATV Wagon

    7

    By Lance Schwartz

    Bosski 1600 AL ATV Wagon
    MSRP: $1899

ATV and UTV camping, hunting and fishing adventures off the beaten path are an exciting and relaxing way to unplug from the world and reboot your brain. The racks or beds on these machines generally get the job done for adventures close to home that don’t require hundreds of pounds of supplies. To reach some of the best destinations, however, additional provisions to supplement days of travel are just too much to handle without a capable trailer to help transport the cargo. The Bosski 1600 AL ATV Wagon is large, well built, has theability to haul over 1,200 pounds of cargo into the backcountry, and is quite possibly the best adventure trailer on the market.

Save Your Brain! Helmet Makes a Difference in ATV Crash

    2

    By Mike Calabro

Let’s face the facts. There are a lot of idiots out there that ride ATV’s in unsafe and/or illegal manners; like the guy in this animated GIF on a Yamaha Banshee. I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, but whether riding epic trails on the farm or the streets of Philly, helmets really do saves lives.

ATV Review: 2012 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI Auto 4x4 EPS

    2

    By Lance Schwartz

2012 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI Auto 4x4 EPS
MSRP: $9,499 – Hunter Green; $9,749 – Steel Blue; and $9,949 – Real Tree HD Camo

Back in the summer of 2006, I was one of the first people in the world to ride the completely redesigned 2007 Yamaha Grizzly 700 FI Auto 4x4 EPS. I logged several hundred miles in the mountains of Montana aboard that Grizzly and instantly fell in love with it. At that point, Yamaha was the first manufacturer to successfully integrate electric power steering (EPS) into an ATV, and it elevated the Grizzly into a category all by itself. Over the next few years, the rest of the manufacturers eventually caught up, incorporating their own version of EPS. [ Read Full Post ]

ATV Gear Review: Ogio Honcho Bags

    0

    By Lance Schwartz

    Ogio Honcho Front Rack Bag
    MSRP: $189.95
    Ogio Honcho Rear Rack Bag
    MSRP
    : $239.95

    Performance:
When it comes time to taking your quad on an adventure, the ability to pack as much gear and supplies on board as possible should be at the top of your list. The weather in Pennsylvania always seems to be sketchy. So, to keep our product reviews fresh, when we get a good stretch of weather, I gather up my crew of test monkeys and we hit the trails for the day to gather as much footage as we can. There is no such thing as stopping for lunch, and we’re deep enough into the bush that heading back to the truck to grab additional gear is impractical. So, if there’s a chance I need it, I bring it along.  [ Read Full Post ]

First Looks at Kymco's 2013 Models

    2

    By Lance Schwartz

The only things hotter than this summer’s weather are the new Kymco products I got to ride on the property of Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC last week. Kymco, a Taiwanese ATV manufacturer, is a relative newcomer to the UTV and SxS market in comparison to larger manufacturers like Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Polaris, Arctic Cat, and Can Am. However, in recent years, Kymco has shown they are serious about wanting a piece of the North American off-road market. In fact, several manufacturers, including some high-end European motorcycle manufacturers, have been selling rebadged Kymco’s as their own brand for years.

PA Will Allow Wildlife Officers to Issue Tickets for State Motor Vehicle Violations

    2

    By Chad Love

Should wildlife officers have the power to write tickets for state motor vehicle violations when they find someone illegally riding an ATV on state lands? Everyone knows that if you get caught riding an ATV in a non-motorized area that you'll get fined for it.

Problem is, those fines don't seem to be much of a deterrent for some. So the state of Pennsylvania is set to give its wildlife officers the power to issue tickets not only for riding in an unauthorized area, but also for state motor vehicle violations.

From this story in the Pocono Record:
In a matter of hours Saturday, a wildlife conservation officer patrolling state game lands in Shohola issued tickets to seven ATV riders. All-terrain vehicles are not allowed on any state game lands. But the threat of a fine of between $100 and $200 does not deter riders from tearing up trails in popular no-ride-zones like at the top of Camelback Mountain in Monroe County.

MK-47 Mounted on ATV Might be Overkill for Duck Season

    By Mike Calabro

A Special Operations Forces soldier mans a MK-47 grenade launcher mounted on a Polaris MV700 during an exercise in Iraq. The MK-47 is a belt-fed automatic launcher that fires 40 mm high explosive grenades at a rate of 225-300 rounds a minute out to a range of 2.2 km. [ Read Full Post ]

Keep Other Drivers Safe: The Right Way to Hitch an ATV Trailer

    1

    By Lance Schwartz

Hitching your tow rig to an ATV trailer, or any trailer for that matter, seems like a simple task. To be honest, it absolutely is. However, one tiny mistake can exponentially magnify the possibility of creating a potentially fatal situation. Here are a few small steps to keep your trailer towing escapades uneventful.

    Backing up to the trailer:
It’s not a race. This process is infinitely easier if your truck has a backup camera. If not, getting out of the truck to check how close it is to the trailer will definitely help prevent any damage to your bumper. It might take a few tries, but the extra time invested will be worth it. If a spotter is available, have him or her guide you in.

Lowering the trailer onto the ball:
With the hitch ball located directly under the trailer coupler, lower the trailer onto the ball by turning the trailer jack handle. With the coupler firmly seated on the ball, engage the safety latch on the trailer coupler. It may take a little muscle to get the trailer coupler seated just right on the ball. Don’t forget to put the pin back in the coupler to prevent it... [ Read Full Post ]

Smartphone App Helps You Find New Trails to Ride

    1

    By Mike Calabro

The ATVescape mobile app version 3 has been released, and it is pretty good.

The app is crowdsourced and needs more submissions from the public for it to be fully fleshed out. I was impressed by the number of ORV trails in my area that I didn’t know existed. [ Read Full Post ]

ATV Gear Review: Ogio Rig 9800 LE

    0

    By Lance Schwartz

    Ogio Rig 9800 LE
    MSRP: $270

I must be getting old, because I’m nutty for gear bags. For the last seven or eight years, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time traveling to ATV and SxS races and press events all over the country. You can imagine the colossal pain in the neck it is to drag every piece of safety gear you could ever imagine needing, especially when those trips involve flying. I’ve sprinted through many airports like OJ Simpson in the old Hertz commercials (YouTube it), dragging numerous overweight gear bags in my roost.  Through those experiences, I’ve found no bag finer than an Ogio. The company has a reputation for building some of the best high-end bags on the market, and I recently got the opportunity to test the new Ogio Rig 9800 LE.

    Performance:
My Green Hive Ogio Rig 9800 LE and I are scheduled to log about 15,000 air miles traveling to different events across the country this summer. In preparation for those trips, I’ve been using the Rig for the last two months to cart my riding gear back and forth to my local riding spot. In the main compartment, the Rig... [ Read Full Post ]
