The Lower Duwamish River was determined to be one of the most contaminated sites in the country by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2001. Contributing factors, such as urban runoff and industrial pollutants, are also responsible for traces of PCBs found in nearly every salmon in the river. This poses a threat to humans and wildlife alike.
The long-term goal is to restore at least 30% of the river shoreline for wildlife habitat. Volunteers will pick up trash, remove non-native species of plants, transplant beneficial vegetation, and spread mulch.
