Abandoned crab traps are bad for boaters and for fish. Mesh traps left behind in the waterways of coastal Louisiana maim or kill large numbers of local sportfish and crab each year. Derelict traps wash into shallow water and become navigational hazards for boats, too.
This March, volunteers will join the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana for a day of locating, removing, and disposing of abandoned traps, clearing the water for human and animal traffic.
