The diverse ecosystem of western Nebraska is home to bighorn sheep, elk, deer, waterfowl, and upland birds. Over 16,000 acres of this habitat is protected by Platte River Basin Environments and is open to the public. Last year, Hero For a Day volunteers helped to construct two wildlife water guzzlers and install big game fences on this property. In the past year, local volunteers have also accomplished an important tree-thinning project that will prevent the spread of wildfires.
On the second annual Hero For a Day workday in Scottsbluff, volunteers will designate and place signage for a non-paved parking area in the tough prairie grasses, to provide the best access and least intrusion to this sensitive habitat. Youngsters will join Boy Scouts and TeamMates mentors to hang bird boxes along a wildlife viewing trail.
