Restoring oyster habitat does more than just expand the local oyster population. Without oysters, the Tampa Bay area is facing increased erosion, decreased water quality, and decreased populations of the native fish and birds that rely on oyster communities for food.
Volunteers will build a new oyster reef by placing bags of oyster shell along the shoreline of the Schultz Nature Preserve, near Riverview, Florida. Over the next two years, Tampa Bay Watch hopes to consruct a total of 1,850 feet of new oyster bars in the area.
