Mosquito Lagoon on Canaveral National Seashore is the longest stretch of undeveloped beach on the east coast of Florida. The lagoon comprises two-thirds of this exceptional 58,000-acre national park, which is home to 14 threatened and endangered animal species, and it has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water. A famous landmark in the region, Turtle Mound is a 35-foot pile of oyster shells that many anglers pass by on their way to their favorite sandbar fishing spots.
The goal is to enhance marine habitat and increase fishing opportunities by stabilizing shoreline areas that are vulnerable to destructive erosion. Volunteers will deploy 1,000 oyster mats and plant marsh grass and red mangroves in the intertidal zone.
