Bourjaily: Would You Buy a Bullet From This Man?

The scary looking slab of muscle in the picture is the Federal’s new spokesman for Fusion ammunition. If you’re a member of the all-important 18-34 year old demographic, you probably recognize Brock Lesnar, who says he’s the right spokesman for Fusion because it’s an “edgy, badass” product.  If you’re middle-aged or older, you may have to be told that Lesnar is the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter who currently holds the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title.

MMA combines several fighting disciplines – you can punch, kick, grapple and apply submission holds. It is huge right now, especially among younger people. The line to get Lesnar’s autograph at the Federal/ATK booth at SHOT stretched far down the main aisle of the giant Orlando Convention and Visitor’s Center. Lesnar is one of a number of popular MMA fighters who are highly visible hunters and shooters (Matt Hughes and Tim Sylvia are two others). For the hunting industry, MMA is the new NASCAR.

I can see MMA’s appeal, but it’s not for me.  I would rather watch football and basketball. If I have a sports idol, it is the professorial Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who... [ Read Full Post ]

    Wolverine Spotted in Colorado

    5

A wolverine has made its way into Colorado for what researchers believe is the first time in 90 years.

    From LiveScience:

Wolverines are the largest land-dwelling members of the weasel family. Adult wolverines average about 30 pounds. Resident adults occupy arctic habitats in Alaska and Canada, and range south into the lower 48 states only high in mountains where near-arctic conditions exist.

The Colorado wolverine, a young male labeled M56, was captured near Grand Teton National Park and traveled approximately 500 miles during April and May, successfully navigating ...

Petzal: On Barrel Life and Women Shooters

In 1988 I got a varmint rifle from Ultra Light Arms in .22/250 with a stainless barrel. I shot it at groundhogs, and prairie dogs, and tested ammo with it, and I noticed recently that it was not grouping as it had. My best loads when the gun was new went into .365 (five-shot groups at 100 yards) and now about the best it would do was .650 and change. [ Read Full Post ]

    Chad Love: Moose Caption Contest

I've previously stated my dislike for North America's ugliest, ungainliest, and generally unappealing big-game animal. But after seeing this picture and the accompanying story perhaps I'm underestimating their qualities.

It Could Be Worse for Gun Owners

In 2006 12.5 million people who were at least 16 years old said they enjoyed hunting in America. They hunted a combined 220 million days that year and took 185 million trips, spending a whopping $22.9 billion.

For our amigos down south, it’s a completely different story. It’s tough to get a gun, let alone hunt. Only 7,000 to 8,000 weapons are sold legally in Mexico each year and that includes sales to private security firms. [ Read Full Post ]

Rare Buffalos Born on Long Island, NY

    9

    From the Southampton Press:

According to Native American culture, white buffaloes are considered to be sacred signs of spiritual importance. That association most likely had to do with their rarity; the National Bison Association estimates that only one out of every 10 million buffalo [is] born white.

But very little is known about their polar opposites on the color spectrum: the black buffalo.

    Moose-Tag Heartache in Nova Scotia

From the Nova Scotia Chronicle Herald:

Tuesday’s luckiest winner of a moose-hunting license is now among the more than 10,000 losers in Nova Scotia who won’t hunt this year.

Glen Marchand of Louisdale picked his own name and was declared a winner by provincial Natural Resources Department staff during a public draw in Sydney Forks, but he was told Wednesday that he had actually picked his similarly named neighbor as a winner.

Petzal: Rifles of Interest, Vol. 1

In the past few months I’ve shot a number of very different and exceedingly good guns that I don’t have space to write about in the magazine. This, therefore, is the first in a series.

Cooper Firearms of Montana is probably best known for its  gorgeous .22 rimfire bolt-actions, but the firm also makes varmint rifles and big game rifles, of which the Model 52 is the largest, and is chambered for most popular cartridges of .30/06 size. The Custom Classic (above) is the high-end version of the Model 52, and is a rifle filled with surprises, starting with size and weight. [ Read Full Post ]

Discussion Topic: Is Your Bullet Big Enough?

From North Carolina’s The Fayetteville Observer via iStockAnalyst:

Don Talbot thinks it should be a crime to shoot an animal with a bullet too small to kill it quickly.

Talbot tried to get state legislators to pass a law to ensure that hunters use appropriately sized bullets when hunting big game. On Thursday, the Senate shot it down, 30-15. [ Read Full Post ]

    Chad Love: Chihuahua vs. Cougar

I dislike Chihuahuas intensely, in part because I just don't see the appeal of owning a dog (if that’s what they really are) that any decent-sized bull snake could swallow whole. But whatever the ugly little creatures are, I'll give Chihuahuas this; they sport a pair of brass clankers all out of proportion to their body size. Either that or the three in this video clip got confused and mistook the mountain lion they cornered in their owner’s garage for an unprotected ankle ...

Discussion Topic: Are Hunting Accidents Crimes?

It’s a tough question. On one hand, prosecuting hunting accidents might force the irresponsible few to take safety more seriously--perhaps even encourage responsible hunters to be extra-cautious. On the other hand, how can you punish a man who’s just accidentally killed his own son?

    From the Associated Press:

By the time the game warden arrived, Kevin Kadamus was sitting down and holding his 17-year-old son in his lap, a blanket covering the boy's bloodied body. [ Read Full Post ]

North Carolina Woman Swatted By Bear

    5

Yesterday we linked to a report about how encounters between humans and black bears are way up in the eastern U.S. And as if you needed an example:

    From the Ashville Citizen-Times:

Gaynell Lumsden was in her garage at Great Aspen Lane when [a mother bear and two cubs] came into her yard about 8:30 p.m. Her small dog went after the bears, and when Lumsden tried to get her dog away, she was swatted by the mother bear.

    Chad Love: Spontaneous Monkey-Wrenching

I hate to follow a book-themed blog post too closely with another book-themed blog post, but this one is just too good to pass up.

This weekend found me not on the water or throwing bumpers for the dogs but killing time at yet another national chain bookseller waiting on my wife's flight to arrive in Oklahoma City. And since I'm not a violence-prone alcoholic duffer I passed right by the Father's Day display on my way toward the "Forgotten Man" section of the book store.

As I was perusing what few shelves the corporate book Borg had seen fit to dedicate to the arcane, unhip and marginalized pastimes of unevolved louts like myself I saw them - five brand-new paperback copies of Bill Heavey's If You Didn't Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? But something was wrong. Bad wrong. To the left of Heavey I saw Les Stroud's (of Survivorman fame) face staring up at me. To Heavey's right there was a book with a cover featuring Bear Grylls squeezing the last precious drops of moisture from an elephant's testicle as he prepared to cross the Sahara on foot and butt-nekkid (or something like that).

Discussion Topic: About That Western Wolf Hunt...

It may not happen after all—of course.

    From the Associated Press:

A pair of federal judges will decide which states in the Northern Rockies have enough gray wolves to allow public hunting, as the bitter debate over the region's wolves heads to courts in Wyoming and Montana.

Environmentalists filed a lawsuit in Missoula on Tuesday seeking to restore protections for more than 1,300 wolves in Montana and Idaho. . . . The lawsuit could block regulated wolf hunts slated to begin this fall and scuttle a plan to remove all the predators from part of north central Idaho.

Gray wolves remain on the endangered species list in Wyoming, but in another lawsuit, Wyoming attorney General Bruce Salzburg on Tuesday asked a federal judge in Cheyenne to clear the way for hunts in his state. Salzburg rejected claims by federal officials that local laws were too weak to protect Wyoming's 300 wolves.

Don’t tell me you didn’t see this coming.

So what’s your hunch, will there be any western wolf hunts this fall?
