What to Use for Hunting Big Game

Q:I am new to hunting, and am on a budget to start. I have an beautiful old Ithaca 12G (smooth at first so I could do anything) and a 10/22. I now want a big game rifle. To get the most bang for my initial rifle buck, I am considering the Ruger American, but I'm not stuck on it, nor am I necessarily stuck on new. My bigger question though is what is the best all-around/all-beast caliber to start with until I can afford a rifle for every purpose? THANKS!!!

Q:I ended up happening into a Ruger American in 30-06, which is a nice story in and of itself since I had planned on buying a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .270. But to the question, what would you say is the best all around 30-06 grain cartridge that you would feel comfortable taking both deer and larger game such as elk with that would allow you to only sight your rifle in once.

Q:I'm going feral hog hunting in southern Ohio here in the next few weeks. Its going to be an all weekend camp/hunt trip. I have recently got my 22-250 shooting REALLY good. I was thinking about taking it, and trying to get inside 100 yards and taking one well placed vital shot. I do have a 12 Gage slug gun i can take that I know will work but I think that will be over kill. I don't want to be over gunned but at the same time I don't want to be under gunned either. Any thoughts about the 22-250?
