Minor Misstep
By Kim Hiss
I don't injure myself all that frequently (knock on wood), but last week, I did a number on my right toe. I don't want to overhype it -- no emergency room visit or stitches required. But it was a good reminder that one absent-minded little misstep can lead to trouble.
I wasn't hunting or really doing anything all that active at the time. I was setting the self-timer for an outdoors family photo (very athletic, I know). I got everything set up, and -- thinking I was being smart -- I kicked off my flip flops so I wouldn't fall when I ran into place. I hit the shutter button, made my mark, the camera clicked, and the photo was a lovely tribute to home and family.
After our successful little shoot, I slipped back into my flip flops while shutting down the camera and headed back to the house with a few cousins. A few minutes later, I realized my foot felt wet. I looked down, and my flip flop was soaked with blood which was also squishing up between my toes. I figured I must have stepped on something when I ran into place for the photo, but I coulndn't understand why I hadn't felt anything. It was a long walk back (this photo was in a specific location), and by the time we got there, the blood was overflowing my flip flops.
What I ended up with after a very pleasant cleaning session at the bathroom sink was a deep cut on the underside of my now very-swollen right big toe (I took a picture -- I figured the camera was handy!) And the next few days of family fun was made a little more complicated by the fact that I could only walk on my right heel, which is to say, not very fast. I was a total nerd about cleaning it every morning and night and keeping it bandaged all day. On about day three a little black fleck in the wound surfaced as a piece of gravel that I was finally able to clean out -- cool!
Now my toe is well on its way to recovery. But how silly that a one-second, four-meter dash would result in all that inconvenience. I have to say, though, despite the boring circumstance, I'm quite proud of my little injury and the little scar I'll be able to show off as proof of my sacrifice for the family album.
I'm sure many of us have suffered much more heroic injuries than this -- maybe while actually out in the field doing something actually active. Cuts, sprains, broken bones, what's your best story? -K.H.

Jacee, just OUCH!And I can't help but laugh about the glow stick suggestion. I told him that we either needed strobes or road cones over the horseshoe stakes. He ended up pulling them out instead. I though the strobes would make a great conversation piece for company though. ;)
Let's see..I am a little behind in keeping up with this blog. However, I have had a few doozies myself, not even when outdoors! I got my arm stuck in a washer wringer when I was six and nearly lost my arm. When I was 18, I hit my head on my desk trying to turn off my alarm clock and needed stitches. even knocked a few teeth loose with that one.Luckily, my injuries, altough stupid, have not been serious. I have a great hint for the horseshoe poles - glow sticks. We also own glow in the dark horseshoes for that very reason!
It's a tie between dropping a 45 lb. Olympic weight on my right big toe (it was the 80's gym spandex on a certain young lady)or breaking my right pinky toe in college as I jumped out of bed and hit my truck/coffe table.
I have a certain reputation for my, shall we say "lack of grace", among friends and family. My husband was pretty sympatheic the first time I walked into the stake. The second time, not so much. Can't say that I blame him. And to make things worse, I can't even use the excuse that I was a bit tipsy at the time! However, in my defense, it was dark out both times that I walked into it. We talked about keeping orange traffic cones over the stakes, but we ended up just pulling them out. ;)And Ow! That's a good reminder about making sure your boots fit and are broken in before a big trip. I'd prefer to keep my toenails where they are.
I'm very glad these ATV accidents among us didn't result in more serious injuries -- it sounds like they both could have been much worse. And Shannon, you ARE quite talented - sounds like you have great aim to walk straight into that horseshoe stake twice! CDGardens, I hope your nail is back before long. I lost both my big toe nails when I hiked the Grand Canyon a bunch of years back because my boots were too small. It's a weird sensation when they're not there! -K.H.
Wish I had something glamorous or more exciting to report, but probably the most traumatic accident was trying to move the bed! I can recommend a very good book on this topic, however. It's titled, "Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies and Why" by Laurence Gonzales. Interesting stuff on the mistakes we make in the outdoors that causes some of us to make it through and others who aren't so lucky.
Those ATV's are an accident looking for a place to happen. Several come to mind but the worst was when I wasn't even driving... We're coming out of the woods at noon and I'm on the back of a Honda 4 wheeler and the guy driving tries to jump a fallen tree and the thing goes sideways and runs head first into another dead tree. I jump off and the next thing I know BOOM something knocks me to the ground and I'm out for the count. When I wake up my friends are rolling on the ground laughing. Great friends right? They say when we hit the dead tree it knocked a huge limb off and it dropped about twenty feet and hit me on top of the head, broke in half and piledrived me right into the ground. Supposedly I looked up after it happened and then my eyes rolled back and I fell flat out. I still hear this story about twice a year from my so called hunting buddies.
Ouch, that would hurt!I'm been fairly lucky in my almost 20yrs of life. No broken bones, stitches or anything serious. Just a couple bumps and bruises along the way. My worst accident would be when my little sis took us through a barb wire fence on a 4-wheeler. We were Very Lucky and walked away with just small cuts. Very scary. After making sure we were OK I grabbed the 2-way radio I had with me and was able to get my mom and uncle to us asap. My sis was as pale as a ghost and took the brunt of the accident. To this day she still doesn't like to drive one all that much.
Yawn.
Whoops. The above was by me. :)
So glad your healing it wasn't anything too serious!I'm not even sure, where to start with silly injury stories. lol. I'm a huge klutz. I have a two lovely scars on my shin that almost seems to be STILL healing from last summer. I happened to walk into a horseshoe stake twice. A week apart. And sliced open my leg. Both times. An inch apart from each other. I'm talented.I think my klutziest moment of my lifetime (so far) was at a family reunion. I was about 20 at the time. Some of the smaller kids where playing catch with a stuffed animal and I was the "Monkey in the Middle". I tried to catch the toy, slipped, fell, and planted my face into the corner of a piano. It happened so fast, that when I hit the ground, I sat up again immediately and promptly smacked my ear on the piano again! The rest of the day is a daze. lol. I ended up getting 18 stitches to more or less sew the left side of my nose back on and another 5 in the cartilage on the top of my left ear. Thankfully, the doc did a great job sewing me up, and you can barely even tell I even have a scar there.
Glad you are healing!I had a left toe injury myself about a month ago.Had my sandals on when I went to close the doors on an outbuilding. We use concrete blocks to set in front of the doors to secure them. When I went to swing the block into place I didn't lift high enough. I caught the edge of my big toe nail and ripped it almost totally off. That was on a Thursday night and I tolerated the flopping nail until the next Tuesday.I didn't want to finish taking the nail off myself. So, I went to the Dr. for some novacaine and somebody else to remove it.I too have recovered. Just waiting for a new nail to come back. ;)
