New Fly Sport: Rollin' Fish
By Tim Romano & Kirk Deeter
Several years ago, my guide friend Kea Hause talked about snipping the hooks off his dry flies and casting at trout, literally just for grins. He figured the "eat" and a split-second tug were all that really mattered to have his fun. Once you trick that instinct with the perfect cast and drift, he reasoned, "what more does one really need?" He called it "rollin' fish."
Of course, I thought he was nuts.
But lately, I've taken up "rollin' fish" as a hobby, and I must say, I'm addicted. I don't stress any fish. Never get my hands wet. And I spend a helluva lot less time pulling flies out of the bushes.
Does this type of flyfishing represent a higher level of enlightenment... or extreme laziness? Am I just flat-out off my rocker? Wait, don't answer that... well, okay go ahead.

This type of 'fishing' makes me wonder what the next big thing will be. Perhaps hunting with blanks? Where is all this going to end? If you're going to fish, then for crying out loud, FISH!If we as sportsmen continue to cave in to those who would bit by bit chip away at our sports, traditions and beliefs, we will eventually find that there is nothing left to chip--
Chad,I agree there are a lot of people that are trying to stop us from doing a lot of things, and the idea of this style of fishing causing problems is a thought that goes through my friends mind every time someone wants to learn about his "Air Fishing" Technique not to mention the flack that he would get from some of us manufacturers in the fly industry, but with all of this considered, I have had some really good times trying his techniques out on a number of species and it is interesting there are some of the same feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction that are gained by a standard fly fishing session, I think it can be seen as another form of fly fishing such as Dry vs. Wet, Streamer vs. Popper and so on, but with anything there will be those who will use what we do to condemn us and our pursuits. We just cant let them. That is why it is imperative we all stay involved and stay vocal.but I agree with where you were going with all of your comments, Well said!JMAL.
As I write this I am at the college bass nationals. Fishing will be around forever. Alabama leads stay tuned for a story on fieldandstream.com where I give peta both barrels Chad.
Do you guys fish the same water and fish so much that you feel the need to do this? Spread your fishing out a little for crying out loud!!! Fish for something else besides trout. Deeter you mentioned all that great water in Colorado well go fish for Bass and Pike and give those trout a break. This is exactly what we don't need!!! We are living in a time when people actually want to outlaw hooks on waters that all of us fish. I know I sound like an alarmist, but you know as well as I do that we live in an age where interest grougs incrementally attempt to take our freedoms in the outdoors away. If some of you feel that guilty about "abusing fish" then go ahead and sell your rods and give up fishing. If you think I am just blowin' off do a google search on "fishing hookless" and see the conclusions that people have made about this subject. You guys are playing right into the hands of those who want to sensitize us to the "feelings of fish". Some believe this is the enlightned conclusion, considering where we have gone with catch and release. Laugh if you want but I am taking another stand. Let's not humanize fish, let's continue to enjoy our tradition and hey every once in a while maybe knock one on the head. Deeter it pains me to say this, because I agree with so much of what you say but this is not one of them. You are not enlightned just giving those who want to take away fishing ammunition.
Tim,Well, the kicker here is that he is a little youtube shy, but has some great footage that you gotta see.Shoot me an e-mail or call me at Water Skeeter and I will get you all his contact info.He said he is excited to see his passion and art come into a more public venue, but wanted to do it through something other than Youtube. If you can't get my e-mail through this profile let me know.JMAL
All I know is I spent the day tying the "Copper Joey," then clipped off the hooks... I'm almost there.
is there a URL we can look at? Or anything on youtube or similar viewer? If not, perhaps the gentleman's email? Let me know...
Tim,Just tell me how to pass it on to you, this guy really is the God Father of "Rollin", or as he named it Air Fishing.JMAL
Jon,Yes, please get us his contact info as I personally would love to see birds going for flies, as I'm sure many other people that visit flytalk would like to as well.
I think it is a really cool way to spin the sport, I have met a guy in So. Cal that this is all he dose, and his flies are as realistic as they get, in fact he has video of birds and frogs going to great lengths to "Roll" on his creations, not to mention some MONSTER Bass! If needed I will get you his info.Deeter I will ask him to make up a corn pattern for joey minus hook!JMAL.
who says i don't use a hook? treble hook with all the barbs. that's 6 hook points, count 'em. only rolling i do with fish is roll 'em in corn meal before i skip 'em into the skillet.
Joey,How do you get your corn to stay on the line with out a hook?Superglue?
yeah, but then how are you gonna eat 'em if they get away?
I do that even when my flies do have the tips!
Sounds like fun, maybe try those new flies from China, the ones that Moffitt Angling is selling. Using their system, you could tie on a piece of cork for the end in place of the hook, attach all the flies on the leader, and have multiple "roll" ups.
Sounds like an idea from PETA at first, but once you start with hookless flies, what's next... although in hot climates, this would allow you to play with trout without overstressing them or killing them. A new form of C&R?
