Shot Down By Gas Prices?

By Tim Romano & Kirk Deeter

Paulbow

Unlike Tim, I didn't even bother messing with road trips and rivers this Memorial Day weekend. Instead, I took the equivalent cost of a tank and a half of gas, and set my seven-year-old son, Paul, up with his first bow. Spent the weekend plinking around with him. This has been a great spring for the little guy, as he's officially flyfishing on his own, and now shooting the bow. He has the swing set ... sandbox ... and a bag target. What more could a kid want?

I noticed a lot less traffic by way of RVs on the highways this holiday weekend, at least here in Colorado. Forgive me for saying so, but it is, in my opinion, almost worth paying $4 a gallon not to have those things clogging the roads all summer. Almost. That's a "point-of-view" perspective that depends on where you live.

What was your take on the Memorial Day scene? Were the rivers and lakes less crowded and the roads less busy where you live? Did you road trip or stay home? Does the price of gas have you making alternate plans for the summer?

Dad and I hit the local reservoir sunday and found a nearly empty boat ramp and parking lot. Had no trouble catching 40 or so bass on the fly, all small but a few in the 2 and 3 pound range (which is always fun on fly rod). Plus they were hanging aroudn weeds, beaver dams, etc. which for me, is a lot better than blind casting in open water. Nothing better than an ambushin bash next to lilly pads.Went back with my brother yesterday and there were at least a dozen boats working the same weedline we worked the day before. Guess the word got out.On our way to try another spot a boat flagged us down---husband, wife, and 2 kids. Apparently it was their 1st trip in the boat, and they ran out of gas. Well, there was NO WAY we could pull these guys in (the boat was big, as were teh passengers), so we had to make the trek back to the main dock, tell the police at the ramp someone was stranded, and then head back. It burned about 1.5 hours of our fishing time, and normally I wouldn't be mad. But not long after we started fishing again, a HUGE storm moved over us, and cut the day short.Guy in the other boat said he had :"no idea" why he ran out of gas. . . His words-- "I put $5 in the tank when I left. . ." I think I know what the problem was buddy. . .

Busy here, but I think that's more people staying close and fishing close, and not travelling far away. JMO

Great picture of your son. Looks like he's having fun!We didn't road trip this weekend. We went out yesterday for a while in the late afternoon.....just in time for a flotilla of canoes to come down the creek. Caught one fish before the 3 drunk fraternity boys fell out of their canoe right in our spot. Decided at that point to go enjoy some cool beers ourselves!Price of gas is keeping our trips this summer a little closer. Thankfully where we live is on the banks of the Tennessee River so there's plenty of good fishing close...just none of those little trout that I like to chase!
