I disagree STRONGLY with parkerhd up there...
the .375 H&H is OVERKILL...
moose, despite their size, are NOT hard to kill...a well placed bullet from your average 180 gr 30.06 will kill moose just as dead as a .50 cal will...its all about bullet placement, not POWER...
You can shoot a moose with a .243 or smaller if you wanted to and knew how to. A .375 would be pretty strong for one but if you were long range hunting it would work.
.300 Ultra Mag is the best large game gun on the market. It is super flat shooting and packs a huge punch on the biggest of game. Remington makes a great one.
Kinfisher is correct, a well placed shot with an '06 will do it. That being said, if your charged by a bull moose in rut you may be wishing for an 375.
30-06 will do you just fine and if you want something bigger a 338 Win Mag is perfect. &mm Rem Mag or anything else smaller that 30cal is not on my list for that part of the country for obvious reasons!
My buddy Bill killed his Shiras last year with the only rifle he owns which is an old S & W Howa .30-'06 with a bent Redfield. Worked fine. If I ever drew a tag I'd reach for my .338 with 250 gr. Partitions.
.350 mag or .35 Whelen (practically the same ballistics) would be excellent. If you have shot these, you realize they aren't as overkill as they sound.
And I can't believe I didn't mention a big bore marlin lever gun right off the bat. Short, handy, thunderous. Moose country is the last place you need a long rifle for long range shots.
If any rifle could, most likely a .30-378 Weatherby Magnum, it has lots of energy even at long distances. Check out Thompson "Long Range" Video, (nothing shot under 300 yards), antelope @ 1011 yards, elk @ 834 yards, at Cabelas, on you tube. Thompson also has "Long Range" shooting courses. The .30-378 is designed for long range hunting (1996) "Big Game" with lots of power to spare!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since I have a choice between 30/06 and 375 H&H that I don't get to use often in Moose Country or Grizzly country
I would practice and shoot the .375 just for fun. Although I am sure 30/06 will handle it.
THERE IS NO BEST --ANYTHING THAT WILL KILL A DEER WILL DROP A MOOSE, THEY DIE RATHER EASILY--YOU ARE NOT AFTER GRIZZ--SHOT PLACMENT IS THE BEST, AS YOU SAY--"GUN"
In MHO the best moose gun is a Marlin 45/70 lever action it's like hitting them with a brick. This gun will take anything on this continent with one shot; and now with Hornady's pointed ammo it's a no brainer; you get 9 chances to hit your target-lol.
rylie, that is truely remarkable what you did, and dedication. you single handedly posteed over a 1000 answers on one question, bravo! but i believe you the reason we have the captcha thing and a limited amount of posts lol

You should try the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. It drops 'em dead every time.

30-30 with a 200 grain bullet hollow point. That should take down a moose.
I've never shot one but in my experience a 300 or 338 win mag cures most ailments to include the 12-1500 pound moose
i pull the triger to shoot mine. i would use a 30-06 or 7mm mag.
you should use 300 wide mag. i hope it helps.

Anything larger than a .270 should work. It's really more about shot placement.
i would go with a 45/70
aim and pull the trigger and use a .410
I use my 45-70 for just about everything big.
A 30-378 Weatherby Magnum.
30.06
.338 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, .30-06.
Try to make the bullet hit the moose in the heart. That seems to be pretty effective.

.300 WSM right next to your truck.
.300 winchester magnum
I have used a .325 wsm on two Alaskan Moose; & it preformed flawlessly.
either a 12gadge powerful buck shot or a 10 gadge buck shot and they'll almost blow your arm off
A 50 cal otta do it
I prefer a 308 or the good ole thutty/ thutty
Agreed 30/30 would work well
