Match the Hatch with the March Brown Dry Fly

[1] Attach 8/0 brown or gray thread to the shank of a dry-fly hook, size 10–14, about a quarter of the way down its shaft from the eye. [2] Strip a clump of fibers from a wood duck flank feather. Secure this wing, tips forward, to the top of the shank. [3] Trim the butt and wrap the thread back to a point just above the barb. [4] Strip some stiff fibers from a dark ginger spade hackle and secure to the top of the shank so that their tips protrude about three-quarters of a shank-length past the bend. [5] Attach a length of heavy yellow thread at the tie-in point for this tail. [6] Twist some tan or gray beaver fur onto your thread, then evenly wrap it forward, stopping just behind the wing. [7] Bring the yellow thread forward over this dubbing using widely spaced wraps and secure. [8] Select two ginger-colored hackle feathers and attach them, butts first and with the concave sides up, just behind the wing. [9] Wrap thread forward, stopping just in front of the wing. [10] Wrap hackles forward, secure, and clip the tips. [11] Finish the fly with two or three half hitches just behind the eye, clip the thread, and apply a tiny drop of head cement.
