Discussion Topic: Is This Arkansas Cougar Real?
By Dave Hurteau & Chad Love
Here’s the latest Internet cougar candy. These photos popped up in my inbox with an unaccredited message reading, This lion was hit between Prescott and Ashdown Arkansas, by a car. Fish and Game had to come and put him down. He charged at the Fish and Game guy in the process. Look at his PAWS!
What do you think? Are these photos real or doctored? Does anyone have more information about this claim?

Hey not much BubbaNate

Lion hit by Car between Prescott and Ashfork Arkansas "Photos attached" Now the rest of the Story! When I started receiving my first e-mails about this Lion hit by a car, between Prescott and Ashfork Arkansas, I was skeptical. I know the area well and I always seem to be overly skeptical about circulating e-mails of giant snakes, bears and big foot being seen around our area.First, I enlarged the photo to check for injuries to match the story. Yeah, there was blood and red meat showing that could match to a vehicle injury. I have seen and been around enough lions that there was no doubt this was a real lion and photo, even though the paw / face view looks overly flat and no claws can be seen inside the hair at any view. Had he been a tame Mountain Lion? No I don't think so, but could be wrong. Next we check out the left top corner of the picture and it's full of mostly mule deer antlers and what looks like an elk antler. Not from Arkansas.. Then there is the point that there is not a town named Ashfork in Arkansas, much less close to the city of Prescott, AR. I know there is a Prescott AZ (Arizona) and they sometimes get AR & AZ mixed up, so maybe they also have Ashfork too. Later I find out this lion picture has made it all over the country with several different city locations named as where the accident happened. This is what I have found out from several sources :Here is the real story: According to the newspaper in Prescott AZ, The lion was run over by a one-ton truck on Highway 64 between Williams and Valle, AZ. The driver and his wife pulled over and found the lion under a tree. The Lion was alive but hurt so bad it couldn't move but, only growl. Due to it's injuries, it certainly didn’t charge at anyone. The couple called 911 and Department of Public Safety Officer Jason Ellico responded. He put the lion out of its misery at the scene. DPS Officer Ellico is also a Boy Scout leader, so the couple allowed him to take the lion and skin it as a demonstration for the Boy Scouts Troop.Jason Ellico is the man you see in the picture with the lion. Now, I have not tracked him down or tried to talk to him directly. I feel the information obtained from several places answered my main questions. Is this is a real photo. "Yes it is" . Was it was taken in Arkansas? "No, it was Arizona not Arkansas." Good intentions to share the photo grew to "Look what was near (our)- (your) town" and the truth got lost along the way.Steve Watson Rich Mountain Country Store Mena, Arkansas USA 3/10/2008
Hey Bubba,Why would somebody take the time to show a fake cougar? I'd say it's real.NateP.S. If you want real white-tail hunting, North Dakota is the way to go!
Will Have the rest of the Story on this Photo, shortly.Steve
Yes this is a real photo. Injury signs and raw meat on inside of leg, blood on floor and small amount on chest. This is not from Prescott / Ashdown but first reported Prescott / Ashfork AR. Most likley from Prescott AZ. I am still checking out the story but feel sure it is Arizona. There are Mountain Lions here in Arkansas, but Game and Fish will not admit to the fact. Sightings here on the mountain during the last 6 months are way up and several sighting of a single lion 20 miles east of Mena, AR. There have also been report of a black panther (normally it is a Black or dark mountain lion also called a panther) These last reports may really be a Panther (Flordia Black) smaller that Mt.Lion and one man got good look three days ago. got cell phone out to slow for pic, but had good pic of track beside his hand for size. Bringing it to me later this week. Seems to match Park Ranger's story from two months ago. Will keep you advised on this and the other Lion Picture. EdJ,I worked in a sporting goods store for a time in the late 70's.Every gun line sent us a catalog that was a "book"! Ruger's catalog came to us folded up like a Rand-McNally roadmap!! Don't know why, just the way they did it!It was not uncommon to get a Ruger shipment in and find a rifle caliber/configuration that was NOT cataloged! Most notably, we got an M77 Round Top in .358 Win with sights! It wasn't SOP, but it did occur relatively often. From what I was able to gather, Ruger would decide a particular rifle might be well recieved by the public, produce it, and if the public clamored for more, they built them, if not, they just dropped it. Ergo: lots of uncataloged Ruger's in varying configurations!Bubba
William,I don't remember exactly, seems it was like $180/90. It is a NEF Handi-rifle. I had to buy scope furniture seperate, which was about another $20 and I stuck an old Weaver K4 I bought at a gun show for another $20. I made my own sling but sling swivels were like $10, so with some thought and inovation, I ended up with a really keen little rifle for less than $300. There was also a Lee Loader and a set of RCBS dies, but that's something else. The Lee Loader only neck sizes. After firing the brass about three times, it would stick in the chamber. I had to go to RCBS to get a full length re-size to solve the problem. I can now shoot the brass until I get a neck split or case head seperation, which so far hasn't shown up in about 6 reloads per case!Bubba
Bubba- I love shooting my .17HMR tack driver. After reading your post about the 22 Hornet centerfire I'm going to get one. Out of all the rifles I have it's odd that I love my Savage .17HMR so much. What did you pay for you 22 hornet?
I live in AR and called AGFC. They knew all about it. It's real enough but apparently the incedent happened near Prescott Arizona, not Arkansas. word has it the AZ newspaper that reported the story made a typo on the abbreviation of the state!
Thanks for the help Bubba.MPN
Sorry Ed J, don't know where I came up with GREG!How does the K Hornet compare to the standard? Is there that much improvement? Do you fire form to make brass? The brass is so thin, you couldn't possibly alter standard Hornet brass too much.Bubba
The headline reads Arkansas. But we here in Prescott, Arizona read about this lion in the local paper. It was hit and injured by a car on Highway 89 between Prescott and Ash Fork, Az. The animal was put down by AZGF after a time on the side of the road. The responding deputy sheriff wouldn’t do it. And, no kidding, he was a very large lion. I have occasion to work and hike in the same general area. I think I'll up the size of my side arm.
BubbaIts a rechamber job.Ruger has a fit if you want something thats not their spec,s.It shoots factory rounds but the accuracy falls off a little bit- - 1 1/2"- 2" at a hundred yds.
Hey GREG,I know that Ruger builds the Hornet in their bolt and I think No. 1 also.In your blog you stated "k" Hornet. Is your Ruger factory or rechambered?MPNOne of the "wildcat improvements" to the .22 Hornet was the .22 K Hornet! Don't know all the specs but understand it's a nice caliber also!Bubba
BubbaI thought that was your normal state of mind.I have a 22K hornet I have taken coyotes out to 225 yds. It prefers to be clean. Its a 77/22hornet by Ruger.
Hey Bubba you know I live in Ar. I have seen the picture before this blog. One huge cat. I do believe the AGFC doesnt have a documented case of a wild cougar in AR but thats not saying there arent any. Myself I dont believe that cat was killed in AR its absolutely huge.
I'm sorry MPNSometime I get to talking and forget what I'm talking about!Accuracy/range!The .22 Hornet is easily varmint accurate out to 200/250 yards!Bubba
MPNAs far as recoil, the Hornet is superb for kids. They get the feeling of a "real" rifle without all the buck and noise!I have taken turkeys at 150 yards.I took a bobcat at 93 (rangefinder) yards. The one deer I killed was about 30/35 yards.I really don't recommend the Hornet for deer sized game, UNLESS, you practice, have the ability to sit and wait for the proper shot and understand that bullet placement is more important than bullet diameter! The one deer I took, was walking right to left, head up. He suddenly stopped, turned broadside and turned his 'head' away from me to look at a doe about 100 yards away! There is a small light patch behind a deer's ears that makes a perfect target! He never even kicked! The .22 Hornet is available in several different brands and models. Mine is a NEF Handi-rifle. I wouldn't trade it for it's weight in gold!To answer your question, it really depends on what you want to shoot! Varmint and down, go for it! Deer and up, be very, very careful!BubbaBubba
BubbaMy son wanted to get a good rifle and I was wondering if you knew how far the hornet would shoot with good accuracy. And would you recommend this rifle.MPN
YoopThe .22 Hornet is a very small centerfire .22 cartridge that to me, resembles a .300 H&H cartridge that shrunk in the wash!Long tapering case, no real shoulder. They were very popular with the Inuit and Aleut on walrus and seal. The round is relatively quiet, very accurate, and extremely deadly if properly placed! My Hornet is a bit finicky. I finally found a load it loves. Nine point seven five grains of Herco 2400, Win small rifle primer and a Sierra 45 gr SP. The bore must be scrubbed after 25 to 30 shots and it takes at least 3 fouling shots to regain it's accuracy. Weird, huh? But that's just my little rifle. It's the rifle I most often pick up when leaving the house or most frequently found in the rack on my 4-wheeler! AND, it's a blast to shoot!Bubba
LarryI have had a few cases where the D.E.C has let me take an animal that they put down.(mainly deer that hit my truck)MPN
Obviously a real cougar. Don't see why one couldn't be in Arkansas. However, I am surprised to see a wild animal that the Fish and Game had to put down in someone's garage. Normally the officials will take the animal.
There have been rumors of cougars here in allegany county NY. Don't know if there really are any. Said to have been released by the D.E.C to control the deer population. Personally I don't believe it but I'm not sure. If anyone has info please comment back.
CharlesKay...Yep yep...saw that news spot about the black kitty outside Decatur....My lady is from Peru area and says her grandma used to see em all the time. Plenty of cover and feed fer cougars here.OH and yep..thats one DAMN BIG kitty cat...and yep, he be real.

some have said that this cat was killed in W. Virginia but i believe it was hit by a truck out west a month or so ago
Prescott and Ash Fork are located in Arizona, home to a healthy mountain lion population.
Are there lions in Arkansas?
That is a big Cat. Far as wounds go look in the first pic at the cat's back legs there is blood like it might have got got clipped in the back end. I think the pic is real. I know one thing I would love to have that big guy adorn my wall along with a couple of our Wyoming wolves.
Probably would, Yoop. That's if the wolves don't get to ya first.
Hey Bubba, I thought you lived in Arkansas. Sorry, 58 years old and the mind is history!I don't think I've ever seen a 22 Hornet. Must not be too popular up here. That cat is really something! I know we've got them here also. I wonder what would happen if a guy sprained an ankle or something where animals like that could see he wasn't right. Would that cat see me like I see pork chops?YoopJack
If this cat's real, it's been raiding Barry Bond's garbage can.
Sorry Yoop,Yep, I actually saw the pics before they showed up here. Not real familiar with Ark but have been through there a time or two.I don't know what I was thinking trying to kill any type game with something like a .22 Hornet! Guess I'll just turn myself into the local warden for "hunting undergunned"!So far, I have taken:1. turkey2. deer3. squirrel4. coyote (stalking turkey deke!)5. bobcat6. feral hog7. prairie dog8. raccoonIsn't that awful!?Been shooting my .270 much longer and it's list is much shorter!Be very careful, Yoop. The recoil on a .22 Hornet is vicious!Bubba
The photos are obviously from a taxidermy shop. Where is the question. Look at all the antlers in the back room of #1 and the guy has on a work apron.
Hey RJ, look good at those photos. The fingers on both hands are in the fur and not on a 2D object. Who is to say it was in Arkansas though. Guess we'll have to wait for AGFC as David suggests. While visiting the Ozarks as a kid, my uncles always talked about hearing a "panther" occasionally. They are there, have been and will be. Probably in a lot more places that people aren't aware of. Sneaky cats they are.Ma Nature is a great thing!
I think the photo is a fake, there is too much detail on the paw held up and on the man's face, you would think one or the other would be less in focus.also the lion looks"2-D" compared to the backround, like the man is holding a cardboard cut out.
Seems like you know that part of the world pretty good. Suprised you hadn't seen that big guy already.Anyway, I seem to remember you talking about hunting a lot with a 22 hornet. You might want to reconsider one of those 338's.LOLYooperJack
Unless Arkansas has a "cougar" proof fence, I'd say that it's entirely possible.I'm sorry Yoop, missed what?Bubba
black cougars fairly common here..have pictures..several neighbors see and here screams..plenty of feed--deer,turkey,bever etc.saw horses chasing one across pasture last friday-local bison herd cat patros fence and screams at them.come see us and bet we can find one in a couple of days.first one in this country i know of 1978 ..picture last year ft. wayne t.v. station coal slick shiny black long tail about 130 lbs. only seen what we think might be the male once lot bigger and more charcoal color wabash river and tributarys lots of woods and cover
Looks real enough, but there's no sign of a wound.
If that cougar was really that big then I'm gonna have to bring a bigger gun hunt'n next time. There could be more of them.
Call AGFC offices and ask them... they're really good about answering questions and providing information. They also have one of the better hunting/fishing/wildlife websites of the 50 states, so keep an eye out there for any updates.
I say they're real. I've doctored photos before, these are real. And I wouldn't dought a cougar could get that big.
I say they're real. I've doctored photos before, these are real. And I wouldn't dought a cougar could get that big.
Hey Bubba, what did you do? Did you miss?LOLYooperJack
The game and fish in arkansas claim that there are no cougars in arkansas, but they are several on mount magazine and they often come off the mountain
This cat if from several states, I've heard it was from texas arkansas alabama, but I think it was hit by a car in arizona. do a snopes.com search on it and you'll see, this photo was traveling with th e24 ft alligator also form several of these states. I live in arkansas and do believe there are a few mtn lions in this state. I have as a couple of my family members seen these cats. They may be pets that have been released into the wild, byut there are mtn lions in arkansas.
Well if you don't believe there are big cats in arkansas you don't get in the woods very much and if you do you don't get far from the road. i promise there are mountain lions/panthers in this state. i've seen it in the wild and wasn't someones pet turned loose.
