An Open Letter To Carolyn McCarthy

By David E. Petzal and Phil Bourjaily

It was announced today by the General Accounting Office and confirmed by the Pentagon that 110,000 AK-47 assault rifles and 80,000 pistols that were given by the Pentagon to Iraqi security forces cannot be accounted for. That's right: gone missing, and without doubt in the hands of people who are using them to kill American soldiers and Marines.

We are not talking about the United States, where you are trying to outlaw a comparatively small number of black rifles that are bought by recreational shooters and collectors and are never used in a crime. No, we are talking big numbers here, and we are talking real bad guys whose fondest hope is to kill Americans, and who do so on a regular basis.

If an FFL dealer lost a dozen AKs or a dozen handguns he would forfeit his license at the very least, and possibly face a major fine. But this is worse by an order of magnitudes. So I ask you, does the Pentagon simply skate on this one? Are you for gun control or not? Are you interested in saving American lives or not? Is someone going to be called to account or not?

Doubting that you will have a single word to say on the subject, I remain

Yours truly,
David E. Petzal

Hmmm...a pissing contest between two veterans. I'm willing to believe that both of you served and that what you've claimed about your respective records is true. However, just having been in the military and or even having served in combat gives you no particular claim to understanding the geopolitical situation nor the reasons a particular conflict exists. IOW, you may have been there but that doesn't mean you know why. Both of you need to find a better way of supporting your assertions than just waving your status as a veteran.

The best solution i can think for iraq is tell Isreal will turn a blind eye towards palestein if they take over iraq for us. They would in a heartbeat. Those isrealis are tough S.O.B. and are tired of their school buses and coffee shops getting blown up. They would take apart palestein then go to iraq. WIN WIN WIN i think.

mr.b,I am currently serving in Afghanistan on my second tour in three years. To say that if someone is young enough to have served in Desert Storm they can't possibly know anything about Vietnam shows how uninformed you are. There are Vietnam vets currently in my unit here in Afghanistan still proudly serving and wearing their combat patches earned during the 60's. I would say these guys have far more first hand knowledge of Vietnam than you do since you didn't join the Navy until 1973.

110,000 AK-47 assault rifles and 80,000 pistols that were given and unaccounted?I like to really know who it is and hold them accountable?Stupid people on Capital Hill!Got to have a proxy (person) to use their ATM card in a teller to get cash for them!If I did this in the Military? No MIRANDA RIGHTS and no trial!I’d be shot on sight! And another little factoid. Did you know when a person is being hired for a job and lets say they had 100 applicants, this is how they would pick that person. Say you had 100 applicants for the one job. Each person is assigned an experience level from one to hundred percent job ability and no applicant has the same experience level. You would think they would pick the person with 100 percent job capability right? Wrong! Dead WRONG! The national average for job hire is in the 60% job knowledge range so they don’t have to pay them much if any! Just like truck drivers, you would think that if a driver had 20 years experience with a perfect record would get paid more at hire and picked over a driver that has only one year experience, your wrong! They will pick a driver with little or no experience rather than the 20 year veteran The results? More accidents with total vehicle loss, loss of freight due to damage in transit, and late pick up or delivery time just for starters. I know this for a fact!

What really gets me is that a state or city will in act a antigun law, confiscate those guns and then auction those same guns to someone to resale them again. It’s all about money and to control of the honest citizen. If I lived in a state or town that would prevent me from owning and carrying a canceled weapon, I would file a class action lawsuit against them. What government office is responsible for your personnel safety? C’mon folks! What government office is responsible for your personnel safety?Answer: there is not an office one!

MarkPlease understand that the US really does NOT want to get Bin Lauden. By keeping him contained but alive and not in custody we leave a single head of the chain of command vs a power struggle by a many headed 'Hydra' of mythologic proportions. Ostensibly the different branches and cells of that organization still march to the same drummer. A game of international terror 'Can you top this?' would be exceptionally hard to defend against. Not to mention the many varied costs of actually bringing Bin Lauden to trial.

Exactly Clay! Hey at least this is keeping Americans at S&W and SigArms working! Gotta look at the bright side right!Just to confirm that our politicians on both sides of the aisle know who butters their bread look at the recent back pedalling by the Obama camp on the war. Won't even rule out incursions into Pakistan. I'm betting the other viable candidates will be weighing in similarly. As always money talks and bs walks. My challenge to McCarthy, Lautenberg et al still stands: Go into our large cities including DC, NYC, Newark NJ, Detroit, LA, Miami, New Orleans, etc and get ALL the stolen military, FBI and police weapons back from the gang-bangers then you may come for my few hunting and target shooting weapons!

The truth of the mater, you will never have peace in the Middle East regardless what you do. There is only two ways to win a war. Either you blow them off the face of the earth or pound them down so far, they have to look up to see down and know if they do it again that will be there end. So Mr b, you can rant and rave, but until you take the head off the snake to destroy the body there is really no win solution here. The former Precedents had the shot and didn’t take it, from the Shaw of Iran to Sadam.

0 Good Comment? | | Report
from Clay Cooper wrote 6 years 36 weeks ago

mr.b Your close, but there’s more to that and it runs decades ago. The reason we didn’t go ahead and take Sadam out was there was no individual or group to take over. There are basically three groups/states within Iraq. The bottom line is, until these three groups can get along the faster things will be under control. My choice would be, arm the Kurds to the teeth and tell them that they will make peace with Turkey, that’s not a choice for the Kurds and let them straighten things out with the next door neighbors! And give them all the iron (air support) support they need.

KEY word in Harry R's speech is more. The republican regime commited us to this war, then bumbled, mismanaged, misinformed, and underestimated the effort. I could not be more proud of the men and women fighting this war. But the fact is-their leadership has left them to twist in the wind. Much of the civil war went this way because of politics, and incompetence in top officers. Remember George McClellen? How about Burnside ar Fredricksburg? Old Abe squashed a ton of civil liberties too. Disagree with Him and you found yourself in jail! These days, you are not a "patriot"! George Bush rushed in-without a strategy-or enough men. Now we have lost shy of 4000-and our taste for revenge for 9/11 (of which the Iraqis played NO part). Yes Clay, I do agree that a thorough cleaning in Washington is past due-right after we vacate the middle east. We should concentrate on fixing our own domestic problems before we force change on others.....you can lead a horse....

Ok Mr. b, you wanted proof of Democrats and this war, here it is!December 19, 2006Harry Reid: More Troops to Iraq!Democrats Prepare to Fund Longer WarBy ALEXANDER COCKBURNThis last Sunday Harry Reid, the incoming Democratic majority leader in the US Senate, went on ABC's Sunday morning show and declared that a hike in U.S. troops in Iraq is okay with him. Here's the evolution of the Democrats' war platform since November 7, 2006, the day the voters presented a clear mandate: "End the war! Get out of Iraq!" and took the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives away from the Republicans. So somewhat to their surprise the Democrats recaptured both the Senate and the House. Then they went to work--to obliterate the mandate. The first thing they did was reject Jack Murtha, the man who said "Quit Now" in 2005. They voted down Murtha as House majority leader and picked the pro-war Steny Hoyer. Then Nancy Pelosi, chose Silvestre Reyes as House Intelligence Committee chairman. Reyes promptly told Newsweek, "We're not going to have stability in Iraq until we eliminate those militias, those private armies. We have to consider the need for additional troops to be in Iraq, to take out the militias and stabilize IraqI would say 20,000 to 30,000-for the specific purpose of making sure those militias are dismantled, working in concert with the Iraqi militaryYou can read the rest athttp://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12192006.html

Mr. B, you know what the real problem is? We are both right and wrong! What we really need to do bulldozer Capital Hill into the Potomac River to start a new and uncorrupt Government. The bottom line, it’s not going to happen. we couldn’t do it if we had the bulldozer. All that red tape, all the environmental impact statements and bidding all that out to Union workers for start.First of all, I don’t like Newt for what he has done in the past. However, his current plan sounds like it’s worth checking out. Because of his knowledge of history and experience, I believe its worth listening to.Newt said recently:At this moment, it would appear that many Americans do not yet understand that Al Qaeda has studied the trajectory of WWII, and of the American Revolution (in which the world's largest superpower was taken down by a small ragtag army of colonials who engaged in unconventional warfare against the “unconquerable” British Army). Thus, Al Qaeda leaders understand perfectly how a small unconventional "army" can nip at the heels of a superpower until it falls down, if it fails to understand the nature of the war being waged against it and fails to respond with all necessary force. Although Gingrich did not specifically mention these troubling parallels in his speech last week, the message was clear. You can find fault in everybody!

Dear Dave (may I call you Dave? You've been writing so much about me in your blog that I think we should be on a first-name basis):Thanks for the query about the missing Iraqi weapons, but that's really not my bag. I'm interested only in contolling guns here in the US, and what the Pentagon does or doesn't do about guns in foreign countries isn't something I can get interested in.You see, I know that the gun-control legislation I hope to get passed in Congress will apply only to law-abiding folks here in the US, because, after all, they're the ones who obey the laws, Silly! The ones who are going to commit crimes with guns will ignore my gun-control laws anyway, so I can't really concern myself with them.Someone complained to me the other day that this approach seemed to miss the whole point of preventing crime, but there's only so much irony I can wrap my mind around! If I'm really clever, tho, I can get Congress to pass a law that will ambush the law-abiders and make them into criminals without their really being aware of it, by making their legal guns suddenly illegal to own. This has the advantage of actually creating criminals--a nice touch, don't you think?Well, enough of this chit-chat, Dave. I'm having lunch with Rosie, who's going to tell me about a whole new bunch of anti-gun bills I'm going to introduce, such as the one which will require a permit to apply for a gun permit, with a sliding fee depending on how many guns you already own. Isn't that diabolical?Your Pal, Carolyn

Thank you Walter Cronkite, Jane Fonda, Senator Harry Reed, CONGRESSMAN JOHN P. MURTHA, Congresswoman Nancy Palosy and the rest for you're wonderful support. It won't be forgotten, believe me.Remember Vietnam? What turned the U.S. Citizens against the war in Vietnam? It was in Vietnam Watler Cronkite announced on the CBS Evening News on the evening of February 27, 1968, in an hour long special, that the Americans were loosing the war in Vietnam and that "the war could not be won honorably. (this was shortly after the 1968 Tet offensive began). The next evening good ol' Walter told America we should quit and get out of Vietnam. the U.S. was kicking ass out of the V.C. in Vietnam. And I guess most of you believed good ol' Walter. It is my belief that if good ol' Walter had not made this announcement (which the VC also heard) that the moral of the VC would of dropped so low that they would of given up the war. Just my openion, for what ever it's worth now days. The 1968 Tet Offensive was their final major push to drive the US out of Vietnam and end the war. Good point, Dave!During the last few wars we've given guns to the 'good guys' only to find our Soldiers and Marines looking down the wrong end of those barrels! Maybe the people who decide who to give weapons to should do some ground time in Iraq! The problem is not restricted to the international largesse of our Pentagon either. There are untold numbers of 'unaccounted for' weapons which should be in state side base armories; included are full auto M-16s, M-4s, handguns galore and shotguns too. Not to mention all sorts of grenades, Claymore mines, LAWS and SAMS. Estimates on missing firearms alone range into the hundreds of thousands; likely now in the hands of the most violent gang-bangers in our cities.Congresswoman McCarthy: Before you come for my few hunting/target shooting guns please go to NYC, LA, Newark, Detroit and DC and get those guns back from the gang-bangers! Next please find and retrieve the plethora of handguns that our own police departments can not. Once you have all those weapons safely recovered and locked away then you may come to my door for mine. No worries here, I will have long since died of natural causes, as will my grandchildren's great grandchildren!Thank you again Dave for inciteful commentary to start the discourse.

The former Precedents had the shot and didn’t take it, from the Shaw of Iran to Sadam.

from Clay Cooper wrote 6 years 36 weeks ago

mr.b Your close, but there’s more to that and it runs decades ago.

Bandido From EnidNo, we the soldiers of Vietnam and Meddle East didn't loose the war; the American News Media and those on Capital Hill lost it for us. They lost the Tet Offensive, and with the help of people like Walter they won the psychological war.http://www.geocities.com/bandido1_1/chapter13.html
