Awesome fish. The confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi are a blue cat mecca. I fish these waters all the time and it is nothing to catch a 30 pounder. It usually takes about 120 lb limit to win a tournament on these waters. You need heavy gear: reel, rod and boat; the current is hard to explain you just have to witness it. We anchored one time right where the two rivers meet in my bro in laws 20ft sea ark. After anchoring; the boat was vibrating from the current so bad we left after about 5 minutes. My biggest catch is 52lb but every year I see several guys haul in 80 pounders.
World record brown trout and blue cat in the same week?! It's nice to know that potential record fish are still swimming out there and see some positive evidence that there are Still healthy fisheries in lots of places in the U.S.
Hope those blue cats get to feed on lots of dead Asian carp in the near future!
Too bad he didn't weigh it and then release it back into the river. It is important to keep this big in the river and reproducing the next generations of catfish.
I caught a 68-pound blue catfish on the MS river several years back. After reading about the measurements of his fish, I'm amazed that mine was only 6" shorter (51 inches) than the world record, even though it's roughly half the weight.
Just goes to show you how much girth they put on in those later years of life!

A 130-pound blue catfish hauled from the Missouri River in the teeth of a dead-of-night thunderstorm is the new pending IGFA all-tackle world record. Here’s the dramatic story of Greg Bernal’s epic catch.

WOW! Awesome job F&S getting the story this fast, the local news here in MO barely gave it 20 seconds last night. Great story, amazing fish!
Congrats! That is true about the weather and cats... I've been bowfishing in similar weather and that is nearly the only time we shoot cats.
What a fish!!! Be great to catch a cat even half that size.
