These gorgeous portraits of fifty all-tackle records were taken from the new book BIG: The 50 Greatest World Record Catches, from artist Flick Ford and International Game Fish Association (IGFA) historian Mike Rivkin. The portraits are based on historic photographs, catch reports, and other research and, according to the publisher, "show each catch as it would have looked emerging from the water." I always like to see these lists of the largest fish ever caught, it gives you something to keep in mind when you hit the water.
We can all dream of landing the fish that will replace this one on the list
Nice post; would have liked to have seen more North American species such gar, carp, blue catfish, etc.
Can't wait for the small fish blog.
great info for us to shoot for.
Cool portraits of some of these fish.
I can'r belive it a 43 lb rainbow trout. That alot bigger than the trout i've ever seen, and you are definetly right it is something to shoot for.
that s pretty neat
i want to know what the bigest crappie is.
This is the way it should be, just the biggest fish.
Biggest Northern Pike was caught in Germany! Who'd have thunk?
Man i'm going make that list.
i have that book i got it for Christmas it is really cool
notice that the marlin all have a lot bigger heads than the normal ones.
Awesome Pics. I dont know if that brook trout will ever be broken!
That channel cat dwarfs mine. That thing is unreal! It was probably corn fed and kept inside a pond. I've never seen anything like that, ever - in the wild.
Ok, this is driving me nut. I know what the dolphin fish looks like, but I looked up the dorado and I keep seeing more dolphin fish. Are they really that easy to mix up, or is there something wrong here?
I wish.....
man i wanna ctach a fish like this
How come there isnt a walleye on the list
Stormy, isn't that a different name for the same fish?
Oops I see it's not.
All of the different "class categories" have taken away some of the excitement when it comes to World Records for me. I understand there is different skill involved with different rods, bait and lines but I think the record should go to the absolute biggest fish, period.
Nice pictures
when do the small fish get their big break, man my dad is always after the big one and is trying to get me away from the little guys. p.s. I LOVE BULL GILL'S
I once caught a slender madtom that was almost 5 inces long. This is huge considering they generally don't reach 4 inches. The big little fish is long over due for recognition!
Well we can all dream...
I would like to see pictures of the actual record fish.
I'm surprised that the biggest sturgeon in that list was 468 pounds. I've seen some pretty big sturgeons pulled out of the Fraser here in BC. They are the hardest fish I've ever fought [but a lot slower than a salmon]
how long was this fish? I caught a 29 inch sea trout a few years ago and am just curious to see how close I was. I didnt measure it but i would assume that it was around 15 or 16 pounds.
Excellent pictures of the big fish!!!!!!
Wow,the bigest crappie but The new world record holder for the biggest freshwater fish is the Giant Mekong catfish (Pangasius gigas) http://e-fishingnews.com/amazing/196
i'm putting the portrait of the yellowtail on a jig stick
