Definitely a place I want to fish, but I'd much rather do it with a fly rod. Just my personal thought - some very nice fish indeed.

we use hardbaits for trout all of the time up in maine, and we aren't even fishing for big trout, i don't understand why people don't use them all the time even though they work good trolling

Trout are predators and they will not pass up a big minnow when hungry. It would be a thrill to catch that big beauty on a fly rod though!

Don't get the idea big fish are easy with crank baits. Bad part is most are foul hooked. Yes, they have one hook in the mouth but the other hooks normally are implaed into the fishes side many times leading to death of the fish. Most of the fish in the White River are stocker rainbows!! The river will kill you!!! Its swift and dangerous when the dam is producing electricty. Every year people die on the river. Water can rise from ankle deep to eight feet within minutes.

Additional Info

If you're looking to catch a giant brown trout in the White River, leave the little spinners at home. In this tailwater, it's all about big lures and serious boat handling. Jeff Samsel reports on learning the ropes of this late winter fishery.
