I must comment: As a mother of three children, who is an average size 8, 150lbs, and has a WONDERFUl husband and loves to hunt, I was very disappointed when I seen these photos. Not only because they dont portrey REAL women who hunt, but because there are women out there who dont hunt but would like to and would take a chance at seeing things like that and wouldnt want to afterwards! I love to hunt with my husband because we enjoy the sport not because we enjoy looking at picture of half dressed women holding guns. We have been supporters and buys of field and stream for some while and for the first time I must say..I AM disappointed!

Buckhunter, I think the more interesting question is whether a bunch of big titties wrapped around a bunch of handguns will make legions of 12-year-old girls want to hunt. Girls are the fastest-growing (maybe ONLY growing) segment of hunters right now - potentially our saving grace. What a welcome for them, eh?

But I get it: This is marketing. These companies are marketing mostly to men. Men have a habit of opening wallets in the presence of cleavage (hence all the scantily clad babes at the duck dinners I go to). I don't really care, and it doesn't really offend me.

But I do kinda wish that folks would keep in mind that there are GIRLS in their target audience. Hunting is not a men's locker room.

As for acceptance: I'm a woman hunter and have been welcomed by 99 percent of the male hunters I've met with tremendous enthusiasm. (And no, I don't have a huge rack, and even if I did, my waders don't show cleavage. So it's not that.) Stuff like this isn't a barrier to our acceptance; the bigger problems are that there are women who want to hunt whose husbands/boyfriends/families don't hunt, and they're desperate for mentors.

I like the Tig Bitties. And they are apparently attached to real women. But there is a danger here. The trend of increasing instances of increased exposure and ads in the mag for pumps and hoes may be a harbinger of what is to come. If it keeps going this way, the current magazine will be reduced to an ad for a website in the smaller classifieds in the back of a porn magazine. "Field and Stream" may become a code word for erotic activities on vacant lots. At a time when guns are not allowed and ex-hunters must meet in secret, like the Christians used to do!

Cars, motorcycles, boats, and even buffalo-wings. Beautiful women should not be excluded from marketing at the shot shows. That would be discrimination. Seriously, how is it any different than a swiffer commercial? Have you seen an ugly chick holding a mop on commercials? A lady who complains usually has a self esteem issue. I reckon that is their problem. This same lady probably should not be handling a firearm anyway. My eleven year old daughter can shoot my SIG 229 SCT 40 with confidence and really enjoys it. Why, because firearms are effing cool. And she spends time with Dad. Pretty girls advertising are not going to dissuade anyone from enjoying the sport.
After seeing some of the negative attitude against the girls I can see why so many people golf. Get the hell away from these nags and bash something. Jealousy and brass do not mix.

You guys are missing the point. Hunting is a participation sport. Nothing is sold to a person with no interest in hunting. Unlike cars, mops and wing dings the hunting community have to strive to keep it's membership up for the survival of the industry. If females are the fastest growing segment of the market efforts should be made allow it to grow. I will be the first to admit, times have changed and if the hunting industry fails to follow the trend they will be selling product only to creepy old me who stuck around for the cleavage.

Back when I started challenging the status quo RE the whole "Booth Babe" phenomnenon that takes over F&S this time of year, I felt like I was a lone voice. Things have changed and I'm figuring to pretty much let it go this time around.

"Pretty much", that is...

As I have read the comments negatively addressing HuntingMom3, I must say I feel sorry for you guys who understand so little of what true manhood is that you would feel you need to defend yourselves against a Mother with valid concerns.

I would guess that you guys know how to have "sex", but that you know very little about having "a woman" and certainly nothing about having "a lady".

I would suggest that you apologize to HunterMom. And if by any means you have managed to trick a woman into marrying you, you should apologize to her too.

To anyone that complains that there were no photos of real girls that go hunting and could be a role model to younger girls that are just getting into hunting, you really didn't pay attention. I'm a Mom. Apparently mean. Mostly because I boss my kids around, not the other way 'round. I love to shoot, makes me feel very empowered. Babes or not. Would I let my 12 year old look at these pics? No. He's 12. Would my husband look at these pictures? Probably, he's over 12. Is he comparing me to these women? No...he knows they can't make apple pie from scratch. Do I think these photos will entice women to the shooting sports? I don't think women are the intended audience so why pose the question. I also don't think women (or men)should be suprised, offended, or any other thing at the content when clicking a link titled "anything-babes". Teach your sons to respect women and your daughters to be respectable. Leave the links alone if you think the content will offend you.

Discrimination? Why is my uneraseable media image of "hunting men" beer-bellied, last-nights-alcohol-breathed, undershaven, slovenly, camo'd men? We must need some HOT underdressed men in the next SHOT show to help us decide if our BUTTS REALLY LOOK BIG IN THOSE WADERS? Or which gun we should buy? Right Ladies? I hope the SHOT show and F&S is listening!

There is nothing hotter than a woman wearing full camo, with bloody hands holding up her kill, or a woman who can outshoot the men around her in a target competition. Instead of showing pics of half naked models holding guns and equipment they have NO desire to use...maybe a better choice would have been to show pics of REAL women participating in the sport they love.

Besides that, the Shot Show is NOT about hunting. It is about guns and bows and other things that go with them!

Some of us have forgotten that this is the United States of America. As long as a small percentage of flesh is covered, it is legal. If it offends anyone, then I suggest you throw your television sets out the window and cut the cable or Internet connection. Stop all paper and magazine delivery's. By all means, don't go to a public pool or beach. I could go on and on but I think most intelligent people will get it or already know what I mean.
I would say the purpose of the ladies at the Shot Show was to attract a buyers attention to the vendors' products and away from competitors. Not for little Jimmy to hide in a closet and ogle an outdoor magazine.

Ok, this is the last thing I'm going to say about this. Someone sees the title 2010 SHOT Shot Booth Babe Roundup. What did you expect to see? Did you go into the slide show to determine just how offended to be? My issue is not that we should be able to stare at hotties with guns, or that this might be inappropriate for children, which I doubt. My issue is that so many people today seem to need to tell somebody that they are offended by something and that there is anybody that thinks they have a right to be unoffended. Stop looking for reasons to complain! If what I've said offends you, get over it!

+5 Good Comment? | | Report
from The Armchair Ou... wrote 2 years 1 week ago

Think of the poor children! They might see . . . what exactly? Cleavage? A stray navel? If your children are traumatized by this, you have bigger issues than the SHOT show. I'm sorry to let this out of the bag, but men like to look at attractive women. Hence the adjective "attractive." I'll even go out on a limb and guess that women like to look at attractive men. I could be wrong, but I'll stand by that statement. The overwhelming number of attendees at these shows are male, hence the cake is cheese, not beef. If women really do take up the sport in ever-increasing numbers, the tide may turn, and we may see "booth hunks" featured in a gallery. The simple truth is that all of this is about a four-letter word ending in U-C-K, and I mean the one that starts with B, as in money. If there is anyone who I have not yet offended, I apologize. I will do better in the future.

Chaps

Some of you have proved that there is a market for intelligent debate amongst F&S readers. Some of you have, well.......

Deliberately misinterpreting what someone says, and then ending your diatribe with 'well this is america HUH!' does not mean you have won the argument, it just means you have belittled yourself. You have to answer the other persons points, not put your own words in their mouth and then flame them for something they didn't say. Homer is a parody not a role model.

The way Huntermom3 has been ranted at is childish - If you wouldn't speak to your own mom like that, so Why oh why?

SBW

PS If you actually want to make friends with a booth babe there is one [almost] sure fire way. Leave the sniggering and peeking to the saddos, and have a conversation with her where she feels valued for her ideas, she's already heard all your witty one liners at the last show she did. Happy Hunting.

Some people need to chill out! Give F&S a break. The pics are of "real" people that are working at the show. They are tastefully done for publishing on their website(no porno or other provocative poses). I think F&S is just having a little fun with it. The woman obviously have nothing to do with hunting. They are paid to do a job at the show, which is to attract people to the booth of their employer. If the pics have made you uncomfortable, then don't look at them. If they have made you feel insecure, then maybe it's time to hit the gym, watch what you eat, etc. :)

from wilmilan wrote 2 years 1 week ago

I'm a red-blooded heterosexual male and appreciate the beauty of the female form just as much as any healthy male. But I too find the babe pics not only out of place but jarring in a publication like F&S, both online and in print, for several reasons:

- This is not a male-only publication and hunting & fishing are not male-only pursuits. So why post collections of pictures that are offensive and demeaning to a lot of women? Such pictures have the effect of *repelling* a lot of women from our sport, not attracting them.

- It makes hunters and shooters look like a bunch of knuckle-dragging Neaderthals who are easily manipulated by pictures of women. And maybe we are :), but there's no point in being so obvious about it.~

- Personally, I kinda resent the attempt to use women to sell guns or magazines (like F&S). It's a bit of an insult to my intelligence for company marketing people to assume that I can be pushed to buy their product just because they've parked some young chick next to it. What am I, a Pavlovian dog? Do they think I'm that stupid? Apparently they do.

- Having been a commercial photographer at one time, I realize that those women are typically just models hired to do a gig, not women who actually appreciate or even know two bits about any of the guns and products they're modeling. I guess that's why a lot of them hold guns like they were handling live rattlesnakes.

Most women know that in our little world, men look at boobs. even some slightly sagging boobs. thats just how we are. If you dont like that there were some cute (maybe even 25% plastic) women holding guns trying to sell them to men, which is the TARGET, then dont read the magazine. Pick up a readers digest. My daughters were not targeted to buy from theses babes, I was. People get offended by the simplist things. The Editor and Publishers of F&S want to show its readers...that that they will use- any photo that will help generate magazine sales in a depressed economy. Their purpose of using girls with guns article is to promote the SHOT Show, just as the Auto Shows do with their sales and marketing efforts.

F&S should rather "seek more creative outdoor stories of hunting and fishing & photos from all over the USA and those living overseas".

Those who write the checks for this magazine and all the F&S editors should seek... more "creative and appreciative stories from a new breed of outdoor writers for this new century".

Outdoor writers do not have to sell boots, rods, guns or guides by mentioning them in their stories, but allow the outdoor story and photos do the talking. One needs not graduate from YALE or USC school of Journalism, there are throughout our nation a great number of outdoor writers who could put F&S back into the hearts and minds of Outdoor Sporting world who like to read about Fishing and Hunting and all aspects of the outdoors world we all love to read about, and dream about.

We really need to see a new crop of writers and photographers rise to the surface....and demand that Outdoor Fishing and Hunting Magazine editors "seek out" more creative writers from the OWAA and from throughout our colleges and universities who write with a more creative flair.

I do believe in pic 11 the girl is shooting a bow, that means she is using the product that she is most likely trying to sell. I do enjoy eye candy at gun shows, and having women there is nice too. I would be more likely to buy a product from a beautiful woman than from a man.

The Shot Show is NOT open to the public. It is a trade show for sellers and buyers. I don't think anyone there even batted an eye. Hell, they all had on more clothes than Miss America will during that fiasco. Ever been to a REAL boat show? More flesh there than a nudist colony! Get over it people!
Besides that, the Shot Show is NOT about hunting. It is about guns and bows and other things that go with them!

+7 Good Comment? | | Report
from mooseye wrote 2 years 1 week ago

PS If you actually want to make friends with a booth babe there is one [almost] sure fire way. Leave the sniggering and peeking to the saddos, and have a conversation with her where she feels valued for her ideas, she's already heard all your witty one liners at the last show she did. Happy Hunting.

The cutie in photo #2 is the only "real" babe i seen in the whole gallery. She looks like the kind of girl who isn't afraid to get dirty.

I don't see a problem with pretty girls attracting attention to they're products booth. Which would I go to? Not the one with the hairy legged liberal, standing there eating granola. Good job!

I do believe in pic 11 the girl is shooting a bow, that means she is using the product that she is most likely trying to sell. I do enjoy eye candy at gun shows, and having women there is nice too. I would be more likely to buy a product from a beautiful woman than from a man.

I'll bet her plastic surgeon is happy with this!OK with me. I find mammoth mammaries to be entirely attractive, as long as they're up. Not beyond the elbows.

Additional Info

Back by popular demand, here is our annual gallery of booth babes from the SHOT Show. Does this have much to do with guns or hunting? Well, no, not really. But does the Swimsuit Issue have anything to do with sports? We didn't think so. Enjoy.
