Deductions drop the green net into the 180s, but numbers hardly do justice to a rack that combines formidable mass with a drop-tine configuration that’s a marvel of nature.
Travis Vollmar, an Army National Guard combat engineer and an Iraq War veteran, took this unique quadruple drop-tine buck with a crossbow in Columbus, Ohio last week. Vollmar expects to ship out to Afghanistan in the summer and will miss the 2011 season, but this trophy may be enough to carry him through to 2012. Steve Hill got the story on the hunt from Vollmar himself.

Crossbow hunting is just RUINING the deer herd here in Ohio! Other state's hunters and DNR need to start paying attention. Nice work, fellas. Your whole crew down there in Columbus is top notch. Iowa, Illinois and other states get alot of due credit, but everytime I pull up outdoor life or F&S I see a big Ohio monster? U know what an out of stater pays to get an Ohio deer tag? same as I do, 25 bucks. (after 100$ liscense) Go check out Iowa and illinois. Ohio DNR is tops.
WOW That buck has tons of character you guys have quite the management program there congrats on two monster bucks.
thank you for defending your country and great deer
Another Buckeye Bruiser. Great deer. Congrats to Travis.
292?
Nice deer! congrats to Travis. I wish he'd tell us where he really got it, everybody knows there's no big deer like that in Ohio
Awesome deer. it figures you were hunting down the road from that other Ohio monster that was just shot. Thanks for everything you do and for protecting our freedom so we have the chance to venture into the woods in hopes of a deer like this
Hoski there are deer like all over Ohio.
CAT22, why do you think crossbows are ruining the deer herd? We have amazing deer herd in Ohio and its been growing every year. Crossbows let people like my dad and Uncles, who are all 68-78 years old, continue to be able to hunt. Many more people shoot deer with our extended gun and muzzle loader seasons. Should we stop shooting deer with firearms?
First I think that deer is awesome, no matter how it was taken as long as it was legal.
CAT22, opinions are like @$$holes and everyone has one. Crossbows have been around for a long time, and have there place in hunting with recurve and compound bows. I am sure those who shot recurve's thought the same thing when compound bows first came around. Crossbows should not be limited to age, gender, or disability..just ask those who used them in the late 1100's AD it is people like you who need to evaluate your reason for being in the field. I shoot both Compound and Crossbow, last year I hurt my elbow and the crossbow allows me to continue to hunt during archery season. The crossbow is in no way RUINING a deer hurd espcially when the deer was harvested inside city limits as the artical states.
WOW! Talk about a good hunting spot! Thanks for your service, and congratulations on 2 awesome deer! Either of those bucks are "A buck of a lifetime" in my book!
captpib-nt14u, you 2 need to lighten up just a tad. Both cat22 and my post was tongue in cheek.
BTW, I've resided in Ohio for over a half a century and enjoy using my Horton Xbow thank you very much.
If you're interested, look back through the message board threads and you'll find Xbow topic has been hashed out favorably long ago. I realize you're both somewhat new here so in the future you might consider clicking on posters handle (in blue) to learn a little something before posting specifically to other posters. Just a suggestion.
Go hunting.
That is the kind of deer dreams are made of.
He just got lucky that Steve and Scott were on BETTER deer!!!??? I would like to see those monsters.
hy my first time but i had to comment it really upsets me when i see hunters harrasing each other over thier methods of hunting it is one of our great freedoms we have thanks to people like travis who fight for it it doesnt matter how you hunt as long as it is legal in your state we need to stick together to fight the people who want to stop the freedoms we have travis thank you for what you do great deer
Hoski-I did read the other two post that cat22 has written, and just like this one are unclear as to his intention. In one breath is is crossbow's are bad and in the next breath they speak about they will start their kid on a crossbow. Pick a side of the fence and stay with it. Crossbow's have a place in hunting they have been around a long time, and there is much controversy. Which is a shame as crossbows have been killing not only game animals but humans as well since about the fouth century BC, and even more so in the 1100's. I served on active duty for over 12 years and for the last six supporting our men and women in one form or fashion. I love my country, I love hunting, and I applad those who serve and deer is awesome just as I said no matter who it was havested as long as it was legal...I commend Travis on that kill..Urban hunting is becoming more common as the population of not only people but game animals grow.
nt14u, As I said, tongue in cheek. I already picked sides long ago. Use my Xbow often. Have seen plenty of Ohio deer in over half century. It was a joke, sorry you didn't get it. Thanks for the history lesson, thanks for your sevice.
Hoski-the fence choosing was for cat22, I get you like crossbows. Good luck in the field...
what is 'ruining' deer hunting in ohio, is deer hunters whining and sobbing about crossbow hunting, it's legal and those who whine shouldn't be. no difference between crosbow hunting and any other legal means of harvesting a deer. The same skills are necessary in hunting regardless of what tool is used. cat should be made to hunting deer with a spear or knife, hey, he wants some sort of challenge, bow hunting with a modern bow just isn't fair by his standard.
Congrats and best of luck to you.
awesome deer man but really 292? i would guess more in the 210 neighborhood?
Awesome buck. Thanks for serving. Who cares how it was harvested. We all need to stick together as outdoorsman and piss on antis together.->>---->
Awesome whitetail Travis! Thanks for service to our country allowing us the freedoms we enjoy! Guys above complaining about hunting methods used, just jealous...
if anyone deserved that buck it was you, thanks for your service.
Crazy nice!
