Daniel Elder shot this 180-class Ohio typical at three yards while hunting on public land, from the ground—on his wife’s birthday. The buck’s 7 x 7 mainframe taped 192 6/8 gross, 183 7/8 net Boone & Crockett. If the green score holds up after the 60-day drying period, Elder’s buck should make Ohio’s top-five for typicals taken with a crossbow.
Daniel Elder of Whitehall, Ohio has hunted the same ridge in Perry State Forest for 17 years, frequently bringing his wife and three children along. The ridge has been good to the Elders, including 15-year-old Savanna who downed her first deer while hunting alongside her dad this year. That was the same day Daniel tagged this 180-class typical whitetail from the ground with a crossbow on his wife’s birthday. What a present for mom, a nice deer from daughter and a monster buck from dad. Steve Hill talked to the hunting family and got the story.

I absolutely love this story. It is wonderful that the whole family is involved, and got to take part. I can't wait for my kids to get their first deer. I have a son and a daughter, and another on the way. Me and their father take them out hunting with us all the time, and I really hope that this is the year they get to see us take a deer, with them there to share it. Great job, guys! :)
So hold on..... This guy shoots a brute that would excite/rattle even an expereinced trophy hunter and he has the piece of mind to wait.... say what 4 or 5 hours while his daughter arrows another nice buck, field dress it and then he decides to track it? Im not knocking the guy at all, I am amazed, I understand backing out while it was on its bed to wait it out but an hour or 2 is alot different then say the 5 or 6 he must have waited. I would have been in complete agony and way to scatterbrained to sit still that long. Kudos to you Mr. Elder, the Family Man and Hunter!
Great story! Awesome pair of bucks! Talk about having a "Honey Hole"!!
Yet again another story on another huge Ohio Whitetail. There have been so many stories and awesome photos of giant Ohio Whitetails. All the resident hunters better look out becasue the non-resi's will be taking over soon. Great story, congrats to you and your family.
Looks like the better hunter got the better prize.

Two Awesome Deer! Congrats to the both of you!
Great Job to you all.. what a treat to be with your family! OHIO rocks for the bucks this year! Go Buckeyes!
Those are both great deer but why shoot it with a crossbow? Do you have a medical condition? B/c if not, I think that crossbows are BS. Shoot a real bow like a man if you are fully capable. I don't even think crossbow kills should be in the "bow category."
LIV2HNT youre an idiot! Great deer by the way, don't let someones ignorance ever spoil a great hunting moment.
@shupakabra... you probably shoot a crossbow too. Yeah, your right. Pulling a trigger while looking through a scope should be considered a bow kill. Shooting a deer with a bow should involve getting the deer close, getting your bow pulled back quietly, and letting the arrow fly at the right moment, etc (some kind of skill). I'm not ignorant, just sick of people shooting crossbows and acting like it takes skill. Like I said, be a man and shoot a REAL bow. Happy crossbow hunting girls.
@LIV2HNT, you sound salty prob cause you've never harvested a deer even close to those in the story. Fact#1: Crossbows have been legal in OHIO since 1976. Fact#2: You still need to get close to deer to kill with a crossbow, really, longbows are more effective past 40 yards sooo you have to be just as close with a crossbow to kill. Fact#3: Ohio keeps on producing monster bucks year in and year out. Seen any of the latest reports on the number of record book entries coming from a state that has had crossbow hunting for over 30 years??? No, I don't hunt with a crossbow, but some of my good buddies do. And you know what, doesn't bother me in the least. I'm getting to spend time with my friends that if they were restricted to using longbows, I wouldnt be spending time with them. Get over your own issues and I'd be careful of saying one of my boys isn't a man cause he shoots a crossbow. You might find out that with his "skills" you might just get your ass kicked
"It is better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone assume you're an idiot, than to open it and prove everyone right." LIV2HNT you just proved everyone right, and if you looked closely at my pic, you'd see that I shoot a compound bow, but am able to shoot a crossbow because I was injured in Iraq. I also shoot a longbow and recurve. In the future I may have to hunt with a crossbow because of my injuries, and it's nice to know I will still be able to hunt with some form of bow. Who cares what category it falls into, just being able to hunt and harvest deer is what it's all about.
Nice bucks! But no offense, LIV2HNT is right (though he was being an jerk about it). A crossbow is like a gun (even more so with a scope) and thus requires less shooting skills than a true bow. I'm glad it allows some of you the joy of being out there hunting, that's great! But I wouldn't say you're a bow hunter, as crossbows are just not true bows. Some have said, you might as well shoot your prey with a hand pistol.
i am savanna i was the one that was with my dad when he killed his 180 in whitetail i cant pull a compoind bow so when my dad hunts with us kids he use a crossbow and i used the same crossbow to kill mine so those of you that think its bs we are about family we do things together and when my dads not with us he use a compound bow so we know who the real man is here and the ones that arnt
Great bucks and congrats as a hunting family.Thr negative comments Ive read concerning the use of a crossbow shouldnt be allowed. Those morons are probably the same class of hunters that will shoot at game at ranges of 70 yds because their gear will allow it.We soon forget what bowhunting is all about, the scouting, setup. The kill is always the bonus or reward. To do it with the family is even greater reward. Again congrats
Nice job! My family loves chasing those big Ohio whitetails too. Even if I don't fill my tag, the time spent with family is what makes it worth it.
good job . id love to get some deer like that at our place
LIV2HNT .your very narrow minded. why do you try to ruin others happyiness. jelousy wont get you no where
