Nice buck!

BTW it's "hollow", although it is pronounced "holler" here in the south.

Look how much it grew in one year! Holy smokes.... The antler he shot off is clearly a great deal smaller than when he harvested the buck.

That buck grew a lot in one year. Dang, before I read the caption I thought maybe it was a shed from a few years earlier.

Amazing buck Scott. I have hunted SW MO for 30 yrs and truly appreciate what you have here! I think you nailed the point that crop production may have played a role. I went dove hunting this year near Exeter and couldn't believe how much more crop production there was, especially corn. congrats!

If that buck weighs 150 lbs, how much do the antlers weigh????? Is there a science on whitetail horn growth to justify why such a lightweight would carry such a big rack and other huge-bodied deer carry rinky-dink racks?

shs teach It has to do with nutrition and gentics both of which fall under biology i belive. Body size has some gentic fetures as deer in colder temps need more mass to maintian heat in winter and have built this addaptation. Large buck body with rinky dink rack may be poor nutrition in the antler growing time of the year. Antler is infact a majority excess protien.

Additional Info

Scott Odenbrett owns his own taxidermy shop in Exeter, Missouri and has seen his share of big bucks. During muzzleloader season last December, he thought he had a 28-pointer to call his own, but his shot glanced off a branch and only took off a piece of his antler. Steve Hill got the story of how Odenbrett got a second chance, and succeeded, in taking the same buck this year with a bow.
