Im glad that somebody worthy, who truly appreciates how great those antlers are, was able to find them. Congrats to Wendland!

Congrats to Wendland. That is a once in a lifetime find. I agree that with him and I would like to think that I'd let him walk if I saw him on a hunt. I'd probably regret it for the rest of my life and wouldn't tell anybody else about it though. Hope he makes a few more years to see how big he can really get.
Great story!

Unbelievable! I remember the stroy about the deer from a previous article. If I recall it said the deer spent a lot of time inside city limits which is off limits to hunting. I just hope this once in a lifetime trophy doesn't fall victim to a poacher. maybe a lot of press can actually "save" the deer from poaching because he will be so well known.

Congratulations on a great find!

And if my eyes aren't deceiving me, I think the right antler just grew by 2". In reviewing the scoring sheet in photo 21, I believe there is an error. The total inches in Col 1 (right antler) is 78 6/8; however, when this number is transferred to the left side of the sheet and entered on Line A, it's only 76 6/8.

I know I'll be accussed of jealousy by posting this question. And, admittedly I am very jealous! But, this guy said he had lots of time, because he was a wildland firefighter furloughed during the off season, right? Most wildland firefighters in my area go on unemployment benefits during the off season when they are perfectly capable of finding another job, because unemployment pays better. I'm just curious to know if the public tax dollars were funding this guy's down time shed hunting through unemployment benefits?! If so wouldn't the responsible thing be to give some of the $ he gets from these back to tax payers who funded his hobby?! If he is among the minority that doesn't go on unemployment, hats off to him for being responsible and lucky enough to find such sweet sheds.

May not be a popular comment, but sell the antlers before next season and have them make replicas in return. The money that is offered for those doesn't come around but once in a lifetime if your lucky. Plus if that muley grows as big or bigger antlers next year, there is a good chance the worth is going to go way down. Having a set of replicas is gonna look just as nice and retain the same memories. But I completely understand the emotional attachment and wanting to keep them.

@sheddersfull: I know Noah from working with him previously and he is not on unemployment. And he's not on welfare or food stamps either in case you wanted to inquire about more of his personal life that is none of your business. But thanks for trying to ruin the mood and for being a jealous jerk. Don't you have a puppy to go kick somewhere? Either make positive comments or keep your mouth shut.

Additional Info

Ever since we broke the story last August of a huge Colorado Springs mule deer that kept showing up in suburban back yards and peeking through the windows of a construction company office, horn fanatics have speculated about how high this freakish rack might score. Now, a local wildland firefighter, Noah Wendland, has found the massive sheds. See what kind of numbers they racked up in the hands of scorers in this F&S exclusive.
