Jans was driving a dirt road on his way to check a trail cam when he first spotted the buck, on November 1, 2010.
“I happened to look over and a big mature doe stood up in the road ditch 10 feet away. I slowed down to take a look and he stood up right behind her. He looked at me and I looked at him, and I thought, ‘Whoa, that’s a nice deer, I wonder if he’s on my trail cam.’” Sure enough, Jans found this shot of the buck taken a few nights before.
Jesse Jans first encountered this dandy Iowa drop-tine from only 10 feet away, then spent a year pinpointing the big buck’s movements. Once he did, the North Liberty accountant told a hunting buddy over lunch one day that he’d have the 21-pointer on the ground that afternoon. Then—like Babe Ruth calling his homer in the 1932 World Series—Jans delivered. Here’s how...

Way to trophy hunt Jesse. That is just the way to do it. Impressive animal and what a celebration of nature.
I don't understand why with such an awesome buck, you didn't have his whole head mounted??
im sure he is. Thats how all head and shoulder mounts start. they cut the skull plate off, cape out the buck and basically mount the skull plate and hide onto a shoulder and head mold. but congrats huge buck. u got him about an hour from my hunting grounds
I Bet that was one Hell of a rush Good shootin man.
I tip my hat to you for being ethical on those first chances. Good job!
Congrats on a super buck, super mass, what do those bases measure?
Now that's a great whitetail with lots of character in it's antlers--Congrats on a great hunt & sharing the story with us!!
"I try to shoot 15 does with my bow, and I stay away from my buck areas until October 25.”
What is the need for shooting 15 does?! I'm a firm believer that you should only take what you need, this just sounds wasteful.
To nseggers:
Actually, all of the does I harvest we process and I give to my clients and I keep two for myself if you must know. I do not waste any deer. Further, we are in a heavy deer population area where I hunt and the DNR has suggested taking twice the number of does on my farm. Most hunters are not wasteful or unethical so the next time you comment think before you speak.
Thank you for all that have commented. I did not realize that this story was posted until one of my clients said something to me.
The official B&C score was 205 1/8, bases were a little over 7", but he carried 6" and 5" through his beams.
Het Jesse, that is a great buck and you dropped him him with a bow and arrow. That makes the trophy even more special. Congratulations!
