OL' Loop De Loop keeps me company
This 24 lb Gobbler had a 11.5" painbrush beard. He sits permanently on a limb over my reloading bench. I roosted him the night before opening day 1994. It was very windy and the limb he was on kept swinging in a looping motion. He would rock around and flip his tailfeathers to maintain balance. That is how he was stuffed.
Species:
Turkeys
Where: Missouri
Method:
Shotgun
When: at 06:30 am
The next morning I set up about 70 yds from his roost. He flew down and walked right into my lap without ever Gobbling.
Nice tom, memories like that will stick with you! About 10 years ago I was hunting Osceola's and roosted a bird over a cypress pond in similar conditons the evening before. The wind was still stirring pretty good the next day and it had rained during the night. At the first gray of dawn he gobbled, it was still about 15-20 minutes till legal shooting time. I answered with a soft tree call only to hear wings immediately begin flapping. He almost landed in my lap! He touched down only about 15 feet from me. He stood there a few minutes stark still then began to mill around. He never gobbled never clucked or anything. It seemed like eternity before legal time came and I could take the shot. I was hunting with a local warden and when I met him at the truck he let me know I had beaten the time by only 30 seconds!
Del how much does a mount like this cost?
This particular bird cost $450 in 1994. A really lifelike turkey costs more than a deer. The Taxidermist said he had to adjust each feather to get the right look. He did a beautiful job on the bird but I was disappointed in the limb he fashioned. Someday maybe I will get a new more realistic limb.
