First Spring Turkey
My brother convinced me that Turkey hunting was a great way to spend early morning hours in the spring. He was right and thanks to him for calling up this bird, my first.
Species:
Turkeys
Where: Missouri
Method:
Shotgun
When: March 30, 2009 at 12:00 am
This was my first Turkey kill in my life. Thanks to my brother for getting me hooked, however, I'm pretty sure my wife feels a little different. This was an unbelievable hunt that only took about an hour. Right after dawn my brother yelped a few times and brought out quite a crowd of toms, 6 to be exact, and I thought my brother and I were both going to tag a bird. But, as luck would have it, 5 of the 6 toms peeled off at about 60 yards back into the timber. We both thought they all went back into the timber, but as my brother stood up he saw the outline of a fan in the timber just ahead of us. This bird was torn whether to go with the crowd or come to our decoy. For about 40 minutes he did nothing, but gobble at our calls and sit still. He was just a little out of range so I decided to belly crawl down a small hill to conceal myself and then crawl back up the hill about 30 yards toward him. I rested my gun on a tree as I got to one knee, only moving while he turned around. After 5 minutes or so I had my gun up ready to shoot and he finally turned around and gave me a perfect shot. It was better than I had dreamed the night before. Thanks Bro!!!
Nice bird but Turkey season isn't open in Missouri yet. Did you get this bird last year? The post says 2009.
