South

Overall Activity Status: Cooler temperatures are moving into the South, which typically stimulates more activity.  Louisiana hunters are seeing deer movement in the mornings, primarily with some seeing deer up and around  until 10 a.m. Dusk remains a good time to see deer if you can get a shot before darkness falls.  Expect increased movement with cooler weather, but also as it gets closer to pre-rut in South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

Fighting: Bucks butting heads is on the increase.  One of my trail cams took the photo above on October 5, showing a spike and a seven-pointer sparring at about 7 a.m.  The same two bucks went at it again at the same location at 7 p.m.  It's doubtful the bucks were fighting over a doe, but likely just trying out their tactics and burning some energy. Bucks are definitely getting more testy as pre-rut approaches.

Rub making: Rubbing is definitely on the increase.  One white oak ridge I scouted Saturday easily had over 30 rubs Finger-size to forearm-size trees were all scratched up.  Look for rubbed trees around food sources, especially oak ridges.

Scrape making: The same white oak ridge where I spotted the 30-plus rubs was also littered with scrapes.  As is usually the case, bucks will be making rubs and scrapes in the same areas which reveal excellent places to set up a stand and wait on a buck.

Chasing
: A few reports of some chasing is coming in.  Though is seems early even in places with a November rut, there are a few over-anxious bucks after does already, but it’s not the norm – yet.

Daytime movement: Most hunters are reporting decent daytime movement.  In Mississippi and Louisiana, where the season has recently opened, more hunters in the woods means more deer being seen.  Acorns, pre-rut, and cooler weather all contribute to more movement.

Estrous signs: None yet, though some of the bucks are anxious for them to start.

X Factor: With the pre-rut getting very close in South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, and parts of Louisiana, it may be worth trying some calling and light rattling to lure in an eager buck.  Grunts, bleats like the "can" call, and light rattling that simulates sparring may be the ticket to bring a curious buck into range.

Bruce: Rut Cranking in Deep South

    2

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: Things are really starting to crank up in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida as reports of buck activity and hot hunting action are coming in. Gun seasons are now open in these states and hunters are out in force. Though the weather has been fluctuating between rain, cold and unseasonably warm, the deer still seem to be moving and hunters are seeing and bagging some good bucks.

The state of Mississippi has been giving up some monster bucks over the last few weeks. On the Morgan Blake National Wildlife Refuge in Holmes county, Andy Lloyd harvested an 18-inch giant on December 7. Scott Champagne bagged a 220-inch buck in Jefferson county on December 8 and two days later his 14-year old son, Hunter, took a 140-class 10-pointer. Dewayne Wiggins was hunting in Carroll county, and moved from the fields to the acorn-heavy woods where he shot a 14-pointer that scored 184.

    Bruce: Signs of the Pre-Rut

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Just like much of the country was gearing up for the rut in late October, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama are in the pre-rut phase right now. The excitement and anticipation of the upcoming rut is upon hunters from those states as the rut edges closer and closer. Typical pre-rut behavior by bucks is being seen in the woods now in these areas.

A hunter in Benton County, Mississippi commented that he grunted in an 8 pointer last week and is seeing lots of fresh rubs and scrapes. Another hunter in the Alcorn area has observed young bucks chasing and increasing fresh scrapes. Likewise a Chickasaw county hunter is seeing young bucks chasing. As is common in the pre-rut phase, the eager inexperienced young bucks will be out chasing and harassing the does even though most of them are not ready yet.

Bruce: Woods Changing, but Bucks Moving

    0

    By Eric Bruce

By now the woods across the south are colder and most all the leaves have dropped. The green forests of September have given way to the bland gray of December. While the deer are still out there, the change in seasons calls for a somewhat different change in a hunter's strategy.

One of the most striking changes are the lack of foliage in the treetops. Tree stand hunters are noticeably more visible in the trees, and this is not unnoticed by whitetails. Back in October, hunters could set up in a tree and let the numerous leaves hide his silhouette. Not now, a hunter trying to hide in the bare branches sticks out like pumpkin in a pea patch.

Bruce: A Tale of Two Ruts

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: It’s the tale of two divergent scenarios here in the South. Georgia, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Louisiana ruts are winding down, while Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi ruts are just getting started. Movement in post-rut states is slowing down. Mike Files hunts in south-central Arkansas and reports that their rut appears over and that movement has died. In their large hunting club over the last three days, Files said they “could hardly see a deer.” They have hopes for second rut activity.

Fighting: Very little fighting is being reported. In post-rut areas, most does have been bred and bucks are tuckered out. Pre-rut states are seeing some sparring with bucks breaking up from bachelor groups and establishing their pecking order through postering and sparring.

    Bruce: Big Buck Roundup

Every deer hunter dreams of shooting a big buck. Much time and energy goes toward that goal. But few of us actually bag a trophy, and too many of us settle for a mediocre buck. Even fewer are fortunate to harvest a truly giant buck. While other regions of the country are known for their monster bucks, the South has its share and this season was no exception.

Bruce: Hunting is Good or Getting There Quickly

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: Activity continues to be good overall, with many areas having a higher than normal acorn crop and several cold fronts having moved through. We are at the tail end of the rut in Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia, but good action is still being seen. My son Zach killed this handsome eight-pointer cruising for does on Sunday in Gwinnett County, Georgia, while another bowhunter in suburban Atlanta bagged a nine-pointer following a doe the same day. Some hunters feel that bucks are holed up in thickets with does in heat, and are no longer out looking for or chasing does. That is likely in some cases, but does not include all deer.

    Bruce: Rut Action Still Hot

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

The rut is traditionally known as an intense two-week period of wild activity with bucks chasing does in heat. All bucks in the area are out pursuing, fighting, looking and breeding does. It's one of the grandest times of the year for the hunter and one of the best opportunities to bag a mature buck.

But its not always like that. Sometimes the rut is sporadic and spotty. You may see numerous bucks running around on one hunt and a few days later the woods are still and quiet. Bucks may be chasing does in early season and then again very late in the year, seemingly stretching the rut out over a few months. The rut will also vary within a state, with some sections experiencing the rut much earlier or later than others. The rut can also be much different a few miles down the road.

Bruce: In Much of the South, It’s On

    4

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: Despite some warm temperatures and a full moon, movement has been excellent because of the rut. Reports abound of bucks chasing does and have been seen cruising, as the rut is here in most areas. Mike Files, who hunts in Arkansas near the Ozark National Forest, says “it’s going on pretty good now in the whole state.” Alabama and Florida are still waiting on their rut, but most of the south is seeing good movement and action, while mature bucks are being seen and harvested.

Bruce: Will Taking A Doe Hurt Your Chances for a Buck?

    3

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Should you shoot a doe during the rut? Assuming you can legally harvest a doe during this period, and most states permit either sex, do you choose to bag the doe or let it go? There are varying opinions on this topic.

Last Tuesday a hunting buddy of mine headed toward his stand before dawn. While walking through a grown up field, he jumped a good buck with a rack outside its ears. With the help of nearby street lights, he watched the buck run off toward his hunting area. [ Read Full Post ]

Best Days of the Rut 2011: November 7

    By Scott Bestul

If you didn’t cash in that get-out-of-work pass on Friday, do it today—or extend it to give yourself a four-day weekend to fill your tag with a tank whitetail.

The chase phase is a period of frenetic activity for whitetail bucks, and today will be especially busy. Local bucks will be in a lather from the first does that have entered estrus. They have smelled the scent of a hot female in the air and might have pursued or even fought for her. Those on the losing end of such a skirmish are not content to skulk about. Instead, they turn into heat-seeking missiles, intent on finding the next doe with an open dance card.

    Bruce: Bucks Before the Rut

    2

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

All across the south, hunters are out in force pursuing whitetails. All southern states deer seasons are open. Bucks in South Carolina, Georgia, and parts of Arkansas and Louisiana are the closest to the rut, while Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi have a while to wait for hot rutting action.

The woods in South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, and Louisiana are full of buck rubs and scrapes and hunters need to read this sign and hunt accordingly. Bucks should be about ready to cruise for does. Scrape hunting and possibly rattling may produce a buck sighting.

Britt Pitre was hunting some family land in Louisiana last Saturday and though it was only her second season, she was eagerly awaiting daylight in the stand by herself. She saw what she thought was a small 8 pointer and nervously got her gun up and fired. Her husband heard the shot and made his way over to help look for the buck.

    Bruce: Bucks in Daylight

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: From numerous accounts, deer are moving well as the rut approaches in most areas. Hunters are out in force and many deer are being harvested. Buck sign is popping up regularly. Best activity times remain early morning, dusk, and after a weather front.

Fighting: A deer processor in Georgia reports a buck brought in that had scars and gashes on its head and neck area from fighting. In areas of pre-rut conditions, rattling may work as bucks are getting frisky.

Rub making: Scraped up saplings are being seen regularly, particularly in pre-rut states. Hunters in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia are reporting rubs throughout their hunting areas.

Bruce: Bucks Come Out In The Cold

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

After a record-setting temperature of 85 degrees on Monday, a front blew through the south bringing rain followed by windy, chilly weather. Southern hunters couldn't ask for better hunting weather as temperatures dropped to the 30s in many areas. Nothing gets deer moving like a cold front and southern hunters should see increased deer movement this weekend.

Bruce: Decent Deer Movement All Over

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall activity status: Alabama started its archery season Saturday, so most of the South has an open season of some sort now. Bama hunters, and most across the south, had morning temperatures in the mid-40s to low 50s, but were also sitting under a full moon.
