South

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Overall Activity Status: Activity continues to be good overall, with many areas having a higher than normal acorn crop and several cold fronts having moved through. We are at the tail end of the rut in Louisiana, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia, but good action is still being seen. My son Zach killed this handsome eight-pointer cruising for does on Sunday in Gwinnett County, Georgia, while another bowhunter in suburban Atlanta bagged a nine-pointer following a doe the same day. Some hunters feel that bucks are holed up in thickets with does in heat, and are no longer out looking for or chasing does. That is likely in some cases, but does not include all deer.

Fighting: Alabama, Florida and Mississippi are in pre-rut and fighting is increasing. Fighting is on the back burner for in-rut states as bucks are more interested in finding a hot doe. Some fighting will break out if two equal bucks are competing for the same hot doe.

Rub making: Rubs are on the increase in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, as their rut approaches. As bucks become more interested in the rut, rubs will show up more and hunters can key in on buck locations.

Scrape making: Scrapes, like rubs, are becoming more frequent in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi as their pre-rut is close. Bucks will make scrapes along their travel routes and feeding areas, but most won't be reworked till closer to the rut. Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas bucks are not using scrapes regularly.

Chasing:
We are at the tail end of the chasing phase for Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas but not quite there for Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi . Still bucks can be seen following does at any time so be on the watch.

Daytime movement:
Deer are moving well during the day and night because of the rut or pre-rut. I checked a trail camera that was out for two weeks and had more daytime pics of deer than night shots. In Mississippi, Jimmy Riles of Giles Island reports “our peak rut comes about a week before Christmas and extends to around Jan. 12 or so. Right now we are dealing with the ever-changing feeding patterns that occur this time of year. We need to get a good frost to kill the vegetation and get more deer moving around and to our food plots. Business will pick up around the 1st of December with the pre-rut, and we should start seeing new bucks every week from now until the end of the season.”

Estrous signs: Does are still coming into estrous in Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas but most are already bred in these states. The few does that have not yet come into estrus will be of great interest to many bucks. More dominant bucks may be holed up with an estrous doe and some movement may be diminished because of this.

X Factor:
Finding a thicket or hiding area where a dominant buck is locked down with an estrous doe may be the ticket to a trophy. Approach these areas downwind carefully. The buck will not leave the doe so keep an eye on the hot doe and the buck will be close behind.

Bruce: Time for Mock Scrapes in Deep South

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Hunting scrapes can be a deadly tactic under the right conditions. Those 'right' conditions are usually pre-rut when the bucks are making scrapes and actually returning to them to check them. Throughout the season bucks may make scrapes and never return to them. The trick for the hunter is to set up over scrapes that have a decent chance of being revisited.

For pre-rut areas in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, finding a fresh-worked scrape may by your ticket to using your buck tag. Look for a bent overhanging branch, freshed paw marks in the soil, and evidence of other deer using the area on a regular basis. Often as the rut gets underway, bucks visit scrapes less and are out chasing does instead.

Bruce: Somewhere in the South, It’s the Rut

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Dec. 22: There's an expression that the sun is always shining somewhere. In the South, the rut is always going on somewhere. While that's not exactly true, the South does have a wide range of rutting patterns across the region.

If you have the time and money, you could be hunting the peak rut almost every week somewhere in the South from October to February. From South Carolina to Arkansas, every state and even areas within states range widely from when their does come into estrous and the bucks are wildly chasing them.

A few weeks ago we posted a trail camera video of a monster buck in Arkansas actually making a scrape. The buck, videoed at night, was given the nick-name "Split Ear" because of the crease in its right ear. Estimated at 160-class, every hunter at Wildlife Farms (870-241-3275) wanted this buck in his sights. One eventually did.

Bruce: Deep South in Pre-Rut Stage

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Dec. 20--Overall Activity Status: The primary rut is over in South Carolina, Georgia, and parts of Arkansas and Louisiana, but it’s pre-rut in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Louisiana. Buck hunting is tough in SC, GA and certain sections of AR and LA except for spotty action from young does coming into heat. The best is yet to come for FL, AL, MS, and portions of LA and AR.

    Fighting:
Pre-rut states are starting to see some sparring and buck interaction as they position themselves for the impending rut.

Rubs: Rubs are showing up more frequently in FL, AL, and MS as pre-rut conditions have the bucks increasingly more active.

    Scrapes:
Scraping is on the increase in FL, AL, and MS and in portions of AR and LA. Areas along the Mississippi River in Arkansas and Louisiana are seeing increased scraping as these areas of the state are in pre-rut. Jimmy Haskins of Bostick Plantation in South Carolina reports that their scrapes are “dead” since their main rut is over.

    Bruce: Some South States Rut-Ready

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

    Dec. 14--Overall Activity Status:
The rut is peaking in Arkansas and on the verge in Alabama. Pre-rut conditions are here in Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Extremely cold temperatures have forced deer to move in order to feed and breed. Rut activity is rampant in most southern states.

I was told of this 160-class buck taken in Lousiana by Preston White; will try to get more details and photos and report back.

Bruce: Think Outside the Box Stand

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Dec. 9: For as long as I can remember, my standard tactic for hunting whitetails has been to sit in tree stands. I arise long before dawn and set up in a tree stand in a likely-looking location. Nestled in my stand, I wait there for several hours for a deer to walk by.

Departing from the stand late in the morning, I go eat lunch and return to the stand, perhaps a different one, and wait till dark on a deer to show up. This strategy is very popular and has proved successful for me and millions of other deer hunters across the fruited plain and forests. But sometimes that tactic doesn't work and a sportsman may need to think outside the box stand.

When the deer aren't moving, or they aren't moving where you are, its time to change methods or locations. Last week a landowner called me and told me that he had seen two bucks on his property and he wanted me to come get them because he wanted some wild meat. That was all the coaxing it took. the following Saturday, I was there in my treestand with my son and another friend. [ Read Full Post ]

Bruce: Cold in South Heats Up Rut

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Dec. 6--Overall Activity Status: Significant cold temperatures are blanketing the south and stimulating overall deer movement. Temperatures in the twenties are responsible for increased activity of does and bucks, and the pre-rut is here or very close in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Colder weather demands more calories to stay warm and deer need to move more to eat more.

Fighting: With the pre-rut comes more competition between bucks, and sparring with the younger bucks has begun. Trevor Fitzgerald of Southern Arrow Outfitters in Florida [888-597-3495] reports "our bucks are starting to rub more now and they are starting to spar and establish dominance. In the last week or so the bucks have really started to feed heavily in preparation of the rut. I have been getting some pics of really nice bucks feeding at our bait stations. I sent you a trail camera pic [above] that shows two bucks sparing."

    Bruce: A Rut Between Ruts

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

For much of the south, we are in an "in-between" phase where there really isn't a hot peak rut going on anywhere. There may be a few pockets here and there that are rutting or a few bucks chasing does that are coming into estrous at a non-typical time. But for the most part, we're in a lull.

Georgia and South Carolina are about peaked out and Arkansas is close, but the best action is still to come for most of the other southern states. So what's a hunter to do when there is no on-going rut? If the bucks aren't actively on the move in a doe-seeking mode, the next best thing is always to look for and hunt food sources.

    Bruce: Rut Split in South

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Nov. 30--Overall Activity Status: The South is in an "in-between" stage overall in regard to the rut. Georgia and South Carolina are at the tail end of their ruts, while Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana are still about a month away from their peak action. Activity is often dictated by the weather here with warm temperatures slowing things down and the recent cold front increasing deer sightings.

    Fighting:
Most fighting in GA and SC has diminished as the rut slows down. Light sparring is increasing in other states as the rut approaches. Steve McKenna of the McKenna Ranch in Mississippi [601-727-4926] reports that his younger bucks are practicing at sparring.

Bruce: Why Stand Time Pays Off Now

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

While everyone knows that the best time to see and kill a trophy buck is during the rut, it’s not always a sure thing that you’ll see or get a shot at a mature deer. The underlying philosophy of many hunters is to put enough time in the woods during the rut and eventually, hopefully, it will pay off and you’ll get that shot.

I’ve been putting my time in hunting several times each week hoping for a crack at a nice buck. Up until this week, I had not even seen a buck with a rack on its head. It was getting discouraging, but I felt if I kept hunting what I thought were good spots that I would eventually bag a good buck. [ Read Full Post ]

Bruce: Rut Coming Closer in Deep South

    0

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Nov. 21--Overall Activity Status: Pre-rut conditions are here in Arkansas and Alabama. Bucks have broken up out of bachelor groups in Florida and are making rubs, according to Trevor Fitzgerald of Southern Arrow Outfitters. Rut is still going in Georgia and South Carolina although at the tail end of the SC rut. Mississippi and Louisiana bucks are getting close to the pre-rut.

    Fighting:
As pre-rut conditions approach in Arkansas and Alabama, bucks will begin sparring and fighting more. There is some fighting in Georgia and South Carolina, although bucks are more interested in finding hot does. Florida bucks are starting to spar and assert their dominance.

Rubs: Arkansas and Alabama bucks are rubbing regularly, while Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi bucks are starting to mark their territory with rubs. Georgia and South Carolina deer are spending more time searching and chasing and only occasionally rubbing.

Scrapes: Scraping in pre-rut states (MS, LA, AL, FL) is increasing, but most are one-time visits. Arkansas... [ Read Full Post ]

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

    Overall Activity Status Nov. 14:
The rut is on in Georgia, tapering off in South Carolina, and getting real close in Arkansas. Hunters all across Georgia are seeing bucks chasing does and many nice bucks are being taken. There has been a significant increase in rutting activity in Arkansas ,with bucks making scrapes and sparring.

Fighting: Georgia and South Carolina are seeing bucks fighting with the rut ongoing. With the rut getting closer in Arkansas, hunters are seeing bucks sparring. One hunter reported seeing eight bucks in one sitting with several of them fighting.  [ Read Full Post ]

Bruce: A Thrilling Southern Chase Scene

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Nov 11: The rut is on in some parts of the south, primarily South Carolina and Georgia, while the other states are inching closer to that magical time. Of all the things that go on in the whitetail woods, one of the most exciting has to be the "chasing" phase where does are coming into estrous and bucks are going wild in pursuit of them.

Bruce: Why Rattling Will Work in the South

    0

    By Eric Bruce

A hunter sent me a photo of two good sized bucks that had been fighting and their antlers were locked together. The hunter was on his way to his stand in Morgan County, Georgia when he came upon these two bucks. Both bucks were mature, with trophy racks. One of them was already dead and the other was finished off by the hunter. He now has two trophy racks, and a fascinating story.
