Overall Activity Status: Apparently, this is the year all of my friends are going to shoot their best-ever bucks! In just the last week, three good friends have shot huge, free-ranging giants. The most recent is a massive buck taken by Kelley Sims. Kelley shot his heavy-horned giant on November 15 early in the morning. The buck was trolling along a Panhandle river bottom, looking for does, when he stopped in an opening by the creek 175 yards away. Kelley was spying on the river bottom’s morning deer movement from a high mesa. Kelley’s .270 Weatherby Magnum put a 140 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet square in the buck’s chest, dropping him instantly. [ Read Full Post ]

Avery Hansen is a good friend of mine from Soldotna, Alaska. For the last several years, he’s made an annual pilgrimage to the bluff country of western Wisconsin to bowhunt for whitetails. Back home, Avery has tagged almost every Alaskan big game animal, including—last March—a very large muskox, which he took with a bow. I’d like to go on record that muskox tenderloin is extremely tasty, and the only reason I know that is because Avery grilled one and served it up after I’d joined him for a hunt last week.

Overall activity Status Nov. 15: The seeking and chase phases are largely over in the northern states I cover. Does are coming into heat in a big way, and there is significant breeding going on. The first significant snowstorm of the season hit this weekend, dumping close to a foot of snow in central and northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Hunters hoping to capitalize on rutting activity are going to need more patience and warmer clothing! [ Read Full Post ]

The Nebraska rifle season opened with a literal bang this past weekend. I heard my first rifle report at 6:59 Saturday morning, and the shooting continued through last light on Sunday, when I climbed down from my stand with a statewide buck tag still unpunched. No worries, though, as I have the rest of the week to hunt and I have some good deer--both whitetails and mulies, I’ve been scouting for a month. Hopefully at least one of them survived the weekend.
One deer I had a tip on that didn’t was this nice 10 pointer taken by my good friend Mark Nelsen about 11 a.m. Saturday morning. I was in a stand a few hundred yards from Nelsen and heard his H&R slug gun bark just as I was about to climb down for a quick lunch break. I made my way over to Nelsen and found him tying his tag to the rack of this nice, tall 10. [ Read Full Post ]

Nov. 15: If you're not finding whitetail bucks foolishly in the rut this week, may I suggest:
1. Be patient just a few days longer if your season allows.
2. Check another location, since whitetail hunters almost everywhere in the West are reporting some sort of rutting activity, sometimes with big intensity differences in roughly the same area.
While the Oregon buck pictured above was absorbed by his scent and the scent of other bucks on a branch when photographed recently by Jim Johnson, northwestern Montana hunter Ron Nail found another way to make bucks swoon this week. [ Read Full Post ]

Overall Activity Status Nov. 14: The rut is on in Georgia, tapering off in South Carolina, and getting real close in Arkansas. Hunters all across Georgia are seeing bucks chasing does and many nice bucks are being taken. There has been a significant increase in rutting activity in Arkansas ,with bucks making scrapes and sparring.
Fighting: Georgia and South Carolina are seeing bucks fighting with the rut ongoing. With the rut getting closer in Arkansas, hunters are seeing bucks sparring. One hunter reported seeing eight bucks in one sitting with several of them fighting. [ Read Full Post ]

My friend, Barry Heiskell (above), is a big buck junkie. Most of the year he’s a hard-working farmer in the Texas Panhandle. But come fall, he’s always on the prowl for big deer.
The area he hunts would get overlooked by most hunters. It’s big prairie country with cattle pastures dotted with prairie dog towns, tumbleweeds and yuccas. Huge CRP fields, corn fields, milo fields and wheat fields stretch to the horizon. Trees taller than a tractor tire are an endangered species. [ Read Full Post ]

Nov. 14: We’ve had largely mild weather conditions for the previous couple of weeks. That all changed across much of the region this weekend, as a sloppy mix of rain, sleet and snow moved in and changed shirtsleeve temps and sunny skies into more November-like stuff. Hunters ditched the T-shirts and looked for warm layers and rain gear!
Did this nastiness going to make hunting better or worse? We’ll find out shortly. I’m betting the cooler temps and lower light conditions put more bucks on their feet during daylight hours….Undoubtedly a good thing. But the flip side? It’s simply tougher to stick with it as a hunter, so fewer bucks will have been shot. Only those who’ve got good clothing and can grit their teeth and grind out the stand-time tagged out. Nov. 12: After a long spell of cool fall weather that was ideal for deer hunting, things have gotten a little stale this week across much of the Mid-South. Daytime highs have hit the 80-degree mark in a few areas. I sliced up deer jerky in shorts and flip-flops on my back deck yesterday afternoon.

Nov. 12--Overall Activity Status: Bucks seem less tolerant of each other with each day that passes. I watched two medium-sized 8-points walk stiff-legged around each other, heads tipped down, both itching for a reason to fight. Eventually, they went their separate ways, but clearly the boys are not friendly any more. They are not willing to share the girls. I saw two other bucks trotting, nose to the ground, like they were scent trailing something.
Two friends killed big bucks this past week in the northern Texas Panhandle: One a big 160-inch 10-point spotted and stalked in big crop fields and CRP fields; the other a 150-plus buck with extra kickers spotted and stalked in similar terrain. That buck had a G-2 snapped completely off. The trail cam pics of that same buck showed that tine was about 12 inches long. As bucks spend more time sparring, expect more tines to be busted. Both bucks were taken with a rifle.
Rub Making: The more country I scout, the more rubs I find. Friends in Central and North Texas report small rubs around every corn feeder on their lease.

Nov. 11: Western Montana is a tough place to beat for big-game hunting when everything's clicking. Verification comes from Jerry Schively, who was guiding Major League Baseball pitcher Alan Embree on Wednesday morning when they found a nice whitetail buck that was out cruising for does. Bam. Buck down.

Nov. 10: If you need additional proof of the craziness that is the whitetail rut, look no further than Michigan. That’s where a pair of fishermen—after steelhead in the St. Joe River—saw a pair of giant bucks engaged in a knock-down fight on the river bank. The fight carried the bucks into the river, where they both eventually drowned. According to reports at this time, the DNR issued tags allowing the fishermen to keep the carcasses.

Steve Topper, a Connecticut bowhunter, has been providing me with rut information from his area. Today he discovered that a huge 10-point buck had been taken right across the road from his home.
James Myers, of Torrington, Connecticut, laid out a scent trail using Tink’s No. 69 on a drag line as he walked to his stand.
“He’s a believer in Tink’s 69,” Topper said.
The place Myers was hunting contained several scrapes. Topper believes that the bucks are heavily into the rut.
After getting into his treestand he saw a buck about 150 yards away and downwind. The buck was constantly lifting and dropping its head as if smelling the ground. When he caught wind of Myers’ scent trail the buck ran straight toward him.

Nov 11: The rut is on in some parts of the south, primarily South Carolina and Georgia, while the other states are inching closer to that magical time. Of all the things that go on in the whitetail woods, one of the most exciting has to be the "chasing" phase where does are coming into estrous and bucks are going wild in pursuit of them.
