Bleech: More Bucks Moving Throughout Northeast

    9

    By Mike Bleech

Northeast Rut Reporter Mike Bleech has been hunting whitetails in his native Pennsylvania and throughout the Northeast for more than four decades. A Vietnam veteran and full-time freelance outdoor writer, Bleech has had more than 5000 of his articles published. States covered: ME, NH, VT, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA OH, MD, DE.

    Oct. 27:
This Pennsylvania doe my trail camera photographed was traveling alone. This could be an indication that it is about to come into heat, otherwise it would probably be accompanied by at least one fawn (of course predators could have gotten her fawns).
Some hunters reported seeing smaller bucks chasing does, but no big bucks were around so it is unlikely the does were in heat. I anticipated that a few more does would come into heat around the October full moon. It did not materialize. However, some rut related activity did pick up. Hunters reported increases in rub lines and in new scrapes throughout the Northeast Region. That is a good sign, enough to re-energize hunters at least. The sight of fresh scrapes is very encouraging. At least we know there are bucks in the area, and they are interested in mating.

    Brantley: Love those Big Rubs

    0

    By Will Brantley

Rut Reporter Will Brantley of Murray, Kentucky, knows the region well. He spends 40 to 50 days each season in the Mid-South whitetail woods. Brantley shot his first deer at age 10 with a sidelock muzzleloader. States covered: KY, TN, WV, VA, NC.

Oct. 26: It was a cool, still morning in late October. I was 16 or 17, and still hunting with a bow on a neighbor's farm. I eased toward the crest of small white oak hillside and stopped to listen—the sound I heard just the other side of the rise was slow, steady grinding. The thought of it being a deer was actually far from my mind—so, naïve, eager kid that I was, I stepped over the rise. A beautiful 8-pointer stood 20 yards away, thrashing a sapling with his antlers. The flexing tree and blur of tines captured my attention just long enough to distract me from what would've been an easy bow shot. The buck picked me out, threw his tail up and bounded away.

Really, I shared that story not to lament on letting that buck get away, but to comment on the tree he was rubbing. It was a small tree of some sort (I can‚t remember what and had I seen the rub alone after the fact, I would have likely assumed it was from a smaller buck, based on the tree's diameter. I would've been wrong.

Since then, I've made it a point not to discount many rubs that I find when scouting. Sure, I get most excited about heavy rubs on fence-post-sized trunks—but I pay close attention to rubs on smaller trees, too. I like to examine such a rub carefully, well up the tree's trunk. Long tines will usually leave nicks and gouges on the tree's trunk several feet off the ground. Basket racks won't.

Bruce: Some Bucks Moving, Scraping, Fighting--and Chasing

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

Oct. 26—Overall Activity: The Oct. 23 full moon and warm temperatures appeared to suppress some daytime movement with more nocturnal activity. But with the pre-rut upon us, more bucks are moving during the day than previously. The onset of rifle season in some states has gotten more hunters in the woods and more good bucks are being seen and killed. The rut in ongoing in South Carolina with Georgia's being close. Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi are still months away from the rut.

    Fighting:
Frank Deaton reported seeing two bucks fighting in Morgan County, GA. The bucks were more than sparring and really going at it. Deaton choose the one seemingly winning the fight and killed the 8 pointer. The bucks appeared to be 2.5-year-olds; maybe the older mature buck fights are yet to come.

Rubs: Rubs are a daily activity for most bucks now. Torn-up trees are being seen throughout the woods, especially around scrapes and travel corridors. The rubs are being more vigorously rubbed with small trees ripped off and shredded.

    Bruce: The Pre-Rut is Here

    1

    By Eric Bruce

Rut Reporter Eric Bruce has been writing about hunting and fishing for newspapers and magazines for 25 years and hunts deer all over the South, including near his Georgia home. States covered: AR, LA, MS, AL, GA, SC, FL.

    Oct. 26:
The southern woods are going through a major transition now and it's evident everywhere you look. The cooler temperatures and the explosion of colorful leaves evidence that its autumn everywhere. But the most important transition for deer hunters are what the bucks are doing right now.

Whitetails have been mainly feeding on acorns and many of them still are. However the bucks are turning their focus from eating to breeding. Case in point: a hunting buddy was situated over a large bean field at dusk a few days ago. He spotted a buck some distance away and it was feeding on the beans. Does started to come out into the field here and there and began to feed also.

Landers: Buck Necks Thickening, Rattling Working

    2

    By Rich Landers

Rut Reporter Rich Landers, a native Montanan and life-long hunter, is the outdoors editor for The Spokesman-Review in Spokane. He has written several books about the western outdoors and has hunted whitetails all his life. States covered: WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, CO.

Oct. 26: Most everybody agrees the peak of the whitetail rut in the West is in mid to late November, but a few bucks haven't heard that. Reports from the weekend clearly show that rattling is working, and that some buck necks are thickening, and some does are not wanting for male companionship.

Reports of bucks with somewhat swollen necks have come from Montana and from Jim Ebel in northeastern Washington's Unit 121. "The buck was very intent on a particular doe among several Saturday morning. It ended up leaving the area with her," he said. "He was grunting while chasing."

    Bestul: What a Wind!

    0

    By Scott Bestul

Rut Reporter Scott Bestul is a Field & Stream’s Whitetails columnist and writes for the website’s Whitetail365 blog. The Minnesotan has taken 13 Pope & Young-class whitetails and has hunted, guided for, and studied deer in the north-central region all his life. States covered: IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, WI.

Sometimes the weather gurus just nail it, and this week they scored big. The predicted high winds are strafing the area as I write this, with gusts that literally rattle the windows and siding on my country home. I don’t know the exact speeds being reached, but they’re speedy enough to hamper air travel and make even driving dangerous.

Then there is this other gauge: It is the last week of October, and I am not heading for a treestand this afternoon. It must be bad!

    Bestul: Warm Temps Kick-starting Activity

    By Scott Bestul

Rut Reporter Scott Bestul is a Field & Stream’s Whitetails columnist and writes for the website’s Whitetail365 blog. The Minnesotan has taken 13 Pope & Young-class whitetails and has hunted, guided for, and studied deer in the north-central region all his life. States covered: IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, WI.

Overall activity: Warmer temps, with the added hurdle of humidity, are kick-starting this week. This has resulted in spotty action; Wisconsin hunters have reported good-to-excellent action in some areas and Illinois archers tell me some of the big boys are well into the cruising phase. Meanwhile, Minnesota whitetailers are largely a frustrated bunch, and I had a report from Iowa this week of a bachelor group of bucks still traveling together.

Brantley: Warm and Windy Weekend; Buck Sign on the Rise

Oct. 25: The weather roller coaster of fall 2010 continued this weekend in Kentucky. It was warm and windy with a big full moon, so I took a break from the deer stand to do some fall turkey hunting and deer scouting.

Draper: Scrapes Are Hot--The Pre-Rut Is On

    0

    By David Draper

Rut Reporter David Draper grew up hunting deer and small game throughout this region and presently lives on a family farm in Nebraska. Draper, former communications specialist for Cabela’s and an authority on the Great Plains, subsists on a diet of duck breast and venison. States covered: ND, SD, NE and KS.

Oct. 25—Overall Activity Status: Deer sightings have greatly increased this past week, with lots of little bucks cruising the woods. Most of the big buck reports are game cam pics taken at night, which isn't surprising coming off a full moon. While the weather has been warm, we're starting into an unstable pattern. Rain and a few nights of frost has made it feel more like fall. Forecasters are calling for a hard frost this week across much of the region, with the possibility of snow in some areas. High winds should strip much of the foliage off the trees as well, which will help with deer sightings.

    Brantley: Right on Schedule

    1

    By Will Brantley

Rut Reporter Will Brantley of Murray, Kentucky, knows the region well. He spends 40 to 50 days each season in the Mid-South whitetail woods. Brantley shot his first deer at age 10 with a sidelock muzzleloader. States covered: KY, TN, WV, VA, NC

Oct. 22—Overall Activity Status: I’ve been out of town (and more importantly, the woods) for nearly a week, but last weekend (Oct. 16-17), deer activity was steady, especially in the morning. Acorns are the key food source in much of the Mid-South right now.

Fighting: Activity should be reaching a fevered pitch at this latitude in the coming days. Late October has always been my most productive time to rattle.

    Rub making:
    Moderate to heavy.

    Scrape making: Moderate to heavy.

Chasing: Little to speak of thus far.

    Daytime movement:
Although daytime movement was good last weekend (I shot a doe at 3:30 Friday afternoon), buddies tell me that it’s slowed significantly this week. The upcoming full moon may partially be to blame.

    Estrous signs:
Sightings of lone fawns are on the rise; other signs are few thus far.

    X Factor: I expect... [ Read Full Post ]

    Brantley: Scrapes and Rubs Aplenty

Oct. 22: Although scattered rubs and scrapes always appear in late September in this area, there are usually a memorable few days each year when things really seem to “pop,” and rubs and scrapes suddenly appear everywhere. Last weekend was a prime example in Kentucky.

    Bestul: It’s Cruising Season

    6

    By Scott Bestul

Rut Reporter Scott Bestul is a Field & Stream’s Whitetails columnist and writes for the website’s Whitetail365 blog. The Minnesotan has taken 13 Pope & Young-class whitetails and has hunted, guided for, and studied deer in the north-central region all his life. States covered: IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, WI.

We are just now entering one of my favorite periods of the rut; the cruising phase. I always know it’s starting up when I see bucks up on their feet, making rubs and scrapes, and just generally being more active. They may badger does some, but much of their activity is still within their core areas. They’re not going bonkers, they’re just up and about...Like they’re getting the kinks out after weeks of feeding and resting. In my experience, there are few better times to hunt a specific buck, as his general whereabouts are still predictable.

Oct. 21: Chris van Kempen spent a full day scouting and hunting his favorite area in Stevens County, Washington, and made these observations four days after the deer hunting season opener: "I noticed two small basket bucks banging heads together in a middle of a field at 8:30 a.m. today. Just the two of them; no other deer in the field.
