Underwater Icicle Kills Everything In Its Path

by Tim Romano

As anglers, we are in water, around water, on top of water a lot. It doesn't matter if it's salt or fresh I think many of us feel a connection with the stuff. As such I had to share this video from the BBC with you all. It has absolutely nothing to do with fishing, but a lot to do with water and is simply amazing.

Slide Show: Fly Fishing The Louisiana Marsh

I'm addicted--hopelessly in love with New Orleans. The fishery, food and all the people that come along with it. In what seems to have tuned into a bit of a tradition, Deeter and I spent the better part of the last week shacked up with our friend and guide extraordinaire Gregg Arnold. We ran around the marsh from Venice to Hopedale with a cadre of Florida guides and friends who often winter in the marsh like Brian "Bear" Holeman, Brian Esposito and Jason Rucker.

The weather made things a bit difficult, but as usual the guides got us on fish and most importantly we had a hell of a time doing it. If you've never seen the city or the fishery I highly recommend you put it on your list. You won't be disapointed. Enjoy the pics.

Tie Talk: Four Ways to Improve Your Flies With a Sharpie

This week the new Tie Talk man, Jay Zimmerman brings us one of his favorite tricks for spicing up a multitude of different flies. The Sharpie. Read Jays simple yet elegant tips below on how to use the pedestrian black magic marker to bolster your tying skills.

Unconventional tricks. Cheap tricks. I love ‘em all. Peek into any avid fly tier’s kit bag and you will learn some cool new stuff to add to your own arsenal. The best ones are usually the simple ones. One of my favorites is having a black Sharpie marking pen handy on my fly tying desk. Here are some of the ways I like to use it.

Spreading The Word About The National Fishing In Schools Program

by Tim Romano

Recently you might have noticed Katie Cole in some of our casting tip videos. She's the program manager for the National Fishing in Schools Program and asked if we might know anybody (wink-wink) who'd be interested in checking out the new video they produced to educate people about their program. They hope to get more schools to sign up, and to get kids interested and educated about fishing who might not have exposure to it otherwise.

We think it's an excellent idea and told her that we probably do know some folks who this might resonate with. Yes, the video is a bit long but if you're interested or might know someone else who could/would like to get the program started in their school, pass the info and our link along.

Shadow Casting Competition: You Could Be The Next Brad Pitt!

We've all heard about competitions for distance fly casting and accuracy shoot-outs, but have any of you ever heard of a shadow casting competition? Yes--shadow casting. The faux cast made famous by Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It. The Shadow Cast was supposed to imitate an entire hatch of rising insects at once. Right.

Videos: Fish With Transparent Head, Turkfish Using Tool on Clam

by Tim Romano

The past couple weeks I've been forwarded some videos from friends and family who thought I might be interested in them. You know, because they involve fish.

The first video from National Geographic (of course), involves what might be the strangest looking fish I have ever heard of. It's called the Pacific barreleye fish. It lives 2,000 feet down, has a transparent head and nostrils that look like eyes. The "real" eyes look up through it's clear domed head searching for food which it steals from unsuspecting jellyfish. You gotta see it to believe it.

Sneak Peek at Tim Romano's Photos from Upcoming Trout Book

by Tim Romano

I'm working on a book project with my friend Geoff Mueller, an editor at The Drake Magazine. Geoff called me a few months ago and asked if I'd like to shoot photos for his book, tentatively titled A Trout's Eye View, from Globe Pequot Press.

A book? Me? Hell yeah!

He told me the project was to cover everything about trout: from physiology to history to what trout eat and where they live. My part was to capture trout, some of which while underwater. This sounded awesome but I had to let Geoff know that my very expensive camera could not get wet, and that I was terribly unversed in underwater photography. For no good reason he still thought I was the guy for the job.

Tie Talk: How to Tie the UV Asher

by Tim Romano

As promised we're gonna keep on rolling with Jay Zimmerman's tips, tricks and patterns.
This week Jay brings us an updated version and some history to the Orange Asher.

From Jay Zimmerman:

The UV Asher is a drastic improvement on a classic fly. The original Orange Asher has been a staple for many years, but is not often used anymore. Fly shops carry them, but many of the newer shop employees may not know what bin it is in, or have any idea what you are talking about. The original was a great fly, very popular with the high-lake dry fly fishermen. The only fault of the fly was a serious lack of durability. The fly would fall apart after only one fish, making it essentially a disposable fly. You could put a cross wrap of fine wire over the hackle to re-enforce it, but that would almost always make the fly look horrible and sink easily (not so much because of the added weight of the wire, but because the wire would matt down or tweak the fine dry fly hackle fibers).

Steelhead Ghost Run TV and Awesome Outdoors Time Lapse Video

by Tim Romano

When scouring the internet for all things fishy you come across loads of crap. I mean tons of it. Every once in a while though you find a real winner. In my case I found two of them yesterday.

The first one called, The Season, a 22- episode web TV show about a ghost run of massive wild steelhead in the Klamath River.

The second is not fishing related, but rather one of the most amazing pieces of outdoor time-lapse videos I've seen in a long time. You will not be disappointed, trust me. It was shot by Dustin Farrells and crewwestinc.com. More impressive yet, it was all shot as still photographs and brought together to make a moving image. Talk about a ton of work.
