Photos: Great White Sharks Breaching for Photog's Synthetic Seal Lure

Diver and shark conservationist Michael Rutzen estimates he’s seen thousands of breaches since 1994, when he began leading ecotourists on shark-watching and cage-diving cruises off the coast of South Africa. Though he has seen as many as 34 natural predations in a day, Rutzen and his crew began using a lifelike seal decoy to tempt hunting sharks to strike in hopes of capturing the phenomenon on film. Nature photographer Jim Abernethy was on a two-week trip documenting the grizzly bears of Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve in August 2007 when he caught on camera a violent encounter rarely witnessed by man: a mama grizzly facing off against a much larger male grizzly in a desperate bid to protect her cubs from attack.

When photographer Al McGlashan jumped into the Pacific Ocean off Port Stephens, Australia, earlier this month, his assignment was to film a textbook release of a striped marlin. But a 10-foot mako shark that had been stalking the shoot flipped the script as McGlashan captured the ferocious attack from a few feet away. Field & Stream got a U.S. exclusive on the photos, video and the story behind them.
