So You Want to go Turkey-Dogging? Large-scale breeders of turkey dogs simply do not exist. To find a pup, you'll have to do some digging. A great source of information is the American Wild Turkey Hunting Dog Association (trkyhntr.home.att.net). Loaded with photos, stories, and links, this group's unique website is the single best source for your search. John Byrne (Lowry, VA 24570) is certainly the best-respected breeder of turkey dogs in the country, but if you expect to pick up the phone and simply place your order, you will be sorely disappointed. "I get folks calling all the time wanting to buy a puppy," he says. "But you see, if they're not going to be serious about it-spend time with the dog, hunt the dog, -well, I'm not going to sell them a puppy. I'm not in this for making money, I'm in it because I love turkey dogs." To go on a guided turkey-dog hunt, contact Turkey Trot Acres at 607-659-7849.-G.B.
