I think baiting takes the fun and challenge out of hunting. But I understand if its done later in the year, because hunting can get pretty hard, and some people just need the venison.

Definately a bow. When you use a bow, you have to get much closer to the deer and you learn much more about the deer in order to know where it will be. Harvesting a deer is a much more rerwarding experience because you put so much work into it.
Q:Do you think arrow speed is the most important part of a bow set up?
from Walt Smith on 03.14.09
18 Answers
Today, arrow speed is WAY overrated. Speed doesnt kill a deer, a well placed arrow does. You can have a bow shooting 250 fps, but if you hit it in the right spot, the deer wont go far. Its frustrating seeing Matthews advertise bows that shoot 360 fps. You dont need that much speed. I feel bad for people that spend a fortune on a bow because it shoots faster than the other bow. Just get out and practice. Also, I have heard many bows actually sacrifice accuracy for speed. Dont waste your money.

It depends on how hard the tree is. But the arrow should just stick in, unles their is a crack or anything break in the arrow, then it will most likely shatter. If there is a broadhead on it, the arrow will almost always just stick in the tree if its not too hard.

Whenever anyone comes up to me and says, "Why do you kill deer?." I start by saying that im not killing, im harvesting which confuses them long enough so I can get some answers ready. I then say that I use a bow, so I give the deer somewhat of an advantage, and im not shooting them with small pieces of metal from 150 yards away. Then, I say that I eat and use all the meat off a deer, so its not like I go out and just shoot a deer and leave it for dead. I like s-kfry's idea. I will use that now and tell them that slaughter houses where your dinner came from is much less humane than what I do. Finally, I tell them about how the deer population is way out of control(they usually agree) and that im helping the deer populations. I explain that its probably hard to understand killing to save the population, but at least the deer wont starve because of no food because of the population WAY over the carrying capacity of the area. By this time, they are either satisfied with my answer, dont care anymore, or have walked away already. But at least they wont ask anyone anymore, because they think they will get another long answer.
I use Scent Killer spray. I dont buyu any scent lok clothing just because I can make my clothing scent free by buying a $20 bottle of Scent Killer and spray down my clothes instead of buying a $100+ scent lok jacket or pants. I have had deer walk within ten yards of me without any sign of being spotted. But a lot has to do with the wind direction.

You can somewhat tell how mature it is by its antlers. Small bucks will usually have thinner, smaller antlers. The bigger bucks typicall have more mass and longer tines. It isnt always right so dont completelt rely on it.
Many bucks have already shed their antlers so now through late April is a great time to look. Look in places where a buck would be during the winter. Bedding areas and heavily used deer trails and feeding areas all produce sheds. Also check in any place where a buck would have to jump, because the antler could fall off. Finally, check along streams, because deer have to drink from them, so they might drop one or two while drinking. Good Luck!
Q:What are the characteristics of good hunter? Good fisherman?
from rezavoirdog on 03.19.09

There are a lot of things that go into a person like that. These days, unfortunately, there aare much fewer people like that. A good sportsman/fisherman has one rifle/bow/rod that he uses because he has taken great care of it through the years. A good sportsman/fisherman has never once bragged about his kill/catch, but instead brings it home, tells his wife about it, maybe his friends, and frys up some of the game and shares it with everyone. A good sportsman/fisherman has never and will never pay money to go to some special property that produces world record bucks or bass on each square inch of the property, but instead he enjoys hunting/fishing his own land that he worked hard to get or ask for and just enjoys what God has blessed him with.

Tell him the meat is a bonus from the hunt. If you want him to hunt too, maybe he can start off by just watching the deer from the stand, eventually he will probably want to harvest one. There are many places where you can donate deer meat to homeless selters, if there isnt anything like that around, just mix the venison with other meats and you can hardly taste it. Definately a bow. I think that using a bow is tougher and is a much more fair chase for the game being hunted. It also brings us back to our primitive times. Hunting to survive. I understand using guns but I prefer a bow, even though these days they are very complicated.
Again I prefer the bigger business. Cabelas is such a large company, that they can afford to have their prices a little bit lower than the other guys. Thats all I need to make me want to go there. Unfortunately, these days money controls our lives, so im goin for the cheaper alternative.

I have a quiver that can go on and off just by sliding it on/off. I used to keep it on until a friend told me a trick. When you are in your climber, you can screw the mount that goes on your bow onto your stand. Then you can clip the quiver on or off your stand with ease. If you but two mounts, you can have it on either your stand or your bow w/o taking the mount on and off.

At 10, 15, and 20 you should easily be able to shoot wiuthin a 1 inch circle. Once you move up, 25 and 30 should be within a 5 inch circle, because you have a lot of room for error on a deers body, but dont get too comfortable. One thing that really helped my groups was shooting all the time at very long distances. I became OK at those distances and moved to normal hunting distances and found that it is SO MUCH EASIER to stay stiill and get a good group.

When I practice with my bow, I first shoot 25 yrds, then 30 yrds, then finally 20 yrds. Anywhere from 25-30 yrds is good because thats how far away most shots will be. Most are even closer, so your ahead of the game. As for the sight, GET ONE, I dont recommend shooting instinct, these days bows arent made for that kind of shooting and when the moment comes for you to shoot an animal, it will be 10X harder to concentrate on your "instincts". For buying, I recommend a Cobra sight. They make great sights all around, some get pricey but I believe you can get some for $50 or below.

I understand what your coming at, but seriously there are better ways to put out a deer. You have a better chance of having a bullet, arrow, or arrow with you then a golf club, unless you are near your house, and even then, why are you hunting so close to your house? Bottom line: use other means other than hitting it with a golf club.

I just go from the stand. Theres no point in climbing down and spooking any deer. It cant hurt to pee from your stand, the deer either wont care, or like someone else said, just investigate, which is even better. Also, some companies sell a special bottle to pee into. Either pee into an empty water bottle or pee off the stand, no point in spending money to take a leak.

This is a good question. When I am in the woods, I stop SO many times to double check to see what I am looking at. It is even worse when I do not have my glasses/contacts on. When I am shed hunting its funny how far I will walk to see what that small white stick is by that tree only to realize there is either nothing there or it is just some stick. It is very rarely an actual shed. When I go in the woods and realize I forgot my contacts/glasses, my chances of seeing an animal goes way down.
I got a pretty big whitetail doe. It was with a bow so I was VERY nervous and shot her in the spine. Two more shots finished her off, but I felt bad about her suffering. Im fine now though because I will be hunting for the rest of my LIFE!

I would say for a bear, you are fine at 63#. Four pounds won't make much of a difference. 63# is enough pull to take down almost any game animal. These days, bows are so advanced, that you dont need as much pulling power as you used to need. Definately use carbon arrows(if you arent already) if you are going to be hunting bear or elk.

I definately say bowhunting. With a bow, you have to get closer to the deer which forces you to learn how to hie yourself better and to know the deer better. With a gun, theres is still a lot of skill involved(so dont get mad at me gunhunters), but not nearly as much as with a bow. But I completely understand those that use a gun because they NEED the deer meat.

If you're tying flies, I hope you have a rod. If not for some reason, get one(obviously). You can get a great fly kit for under $200 that'll last you a good long time. Sometimes they include a DVD on how to get started. Watch this one or watch some videos online. After you get the basic idea on how to cast, get all your gear together. Tie all your lines together, and put a fly on it. Make sure you tie everything together with the appropriate knots. Choose a fly that matches the fish you want to catch. Finally, just get outside and just practice casting. You cant learn how to fly fish from watching videos of people doing it themselves, you gotta get out there and do it. Finally, just go to a local pond and try catching some panfish. After that expand the places you fish, and the species you wanna catch. Soon you'll be fishing like a pro.

Q:What type of bow is better to shoot, single or dual cam? What is the best alround rifle cartridge?
from d rod on 03.14.09

For the cams, I would say the dual cam is better. Just because it is a much smoother draw when you have equal pulling on each limb. When you have a single cam, you have to get one big cam around. When the moment of truth comes you dont want to be struggling to get that one cam around.

Thats a very tough question that I have heard before. It depends on the condition of the deers wound. If the deer has some injury that seems like it was recent and will likely affect the rest of its life, I would most likely put it down. But if the deer had a problem that seemed old, I would figure that the deer can survive with the injury, so then I probably wouldnt.
The first time I ever felt buck fever, I started shaking uncontrollably. I stood up and my knees literally started shaking and wobbling. I tried to get used to it, but first of all, you cant, and second of all, it is an addicting feeling.
Both Fred Bear and PSE make some pretty good bows and the prices are also good. Its hard finding a good bow below $300, but the bows at $300 will be great and last a good long time. I dont know much on parker bows, but you definately need to do your homework when it comes to buying your first bow.

from Jim in Mo on 03.12.09

When I first heard this, I thought it was a great idea, but apparently I was wrong. I forgot that by the time you want to bleed out the deer, its heart is obviously not beating, therefore, no blood is pumping through the body. Slitting the throat will produce some blood, but nothing that would cause a dramatic decrease in weight.
When you first put it up, the deer will definately be very cautious at this new object in their home, but just like houses, cars, and people, they will get used to it after a while, which makes it a perfect place to hunt. You could also dress the ladder up with some vines, sticks, or fake leaves so they are less cautious at first.

Only whitetail, not much interest in any other.
I've heard great things about it. Like everything Gerber makes. It has lots of uses and straps almost anywhere on your body.

I just look for any deer sign when I first enter the woods. I look mainly in a large field, but I make my way to the field while walking on deer trails or following streams. Strams are good places to look, and easy to follow.
Q:What is the biology behind mule deer and whitetail deer having different antlers?

Its just because of where tthey evolved. Different locations equal different looks. Nowadays though they both live in the relatively same areas in some places.

The healthier the deer, the longer it keeps its gear.(Hey, that rhymes) Anyway it has nothing to do with antler size, just the bucks health.

A treestand is a must. Summit climbers are great. Lots of camo because you'll bve getting close to the deer. And as said above-Scent Elimination. Scent killer is good. Good Luck fellow bowhunter!

Way of the Whitetail has a lot of good information in it.
Thats a tough question. I would probably let it walk because I would be too nervous to focus on anything but running. If I was in a treestand, I stilll wouldnt shoot it but would definately take LOTS of pictures and videos. He would probably leave quickly though because I would have soiled my pants.
