  • Can a Young Pup Learn from an Older Bird Dog?
    16

I got an invitation to go quail hunting last weekend at Brays Plantation in Sheldon, S.C. I’m a newbie quail hunter, but I jumped at the chance, of course. The birds were thick, the weather was perfect, and, surprisingly, my shot wasn’t too far off.

My grandfather had a pointer he sent off to school. A one in a lifetime dog. He was amazing! So my grandpa bought a brittany and she learned from the pointer. At the end of the pointers days you could see how the Brit had picked up so much from her.

  • Chad Love: Would You Pay $25,000 for a Piece of Wood?
    38

Keeping in line with today's theme of outrageous prices paid for extremely rare rare items (see Merwin’s post on the $177,000 bluefin tuna), I came across this item  while perusing one of my favorite bird-hunting sites, Upland Journal this morning.

If yall are thinking about buying it, I will get you 5 cords of wood and drive anywhere in lower 48 for 25000!

  • Doggone Good! Best Dove Recipe Ever
    24

I’m not much of chef. My wife, Jenny, on the other hand, is superb. But the other day I stumbled upon a dove recipe that blew away every other one I had tried. And since we’re still deep in dove season, I figured we could take a break from straight dog talk and get down to eating.

Yes this ia a awesome recipe! Its also good with quail, backstrap, and sliced chicken breast. I personally think the chicken is the best! I also like to get the cheap thin bacon and wrap the meat completly not just around the sides, so the cream cheese doesnt mostly end up on the grill.

  • Caption Contest: Write the Best... Win Gear
    182

Yes I know, some of you might have seen this image in the magazine a couple of months ago. You didn't get to write your own witty caption for it though.

We'll give it about a week and whomever comes up with the best caption for this photograph will win...

Oh heck they will be fine it was only a 75 foot drop, and its still above water. The coast guard will be out shortly. No need for us to quit fishing.

  • Will the Good Life Ruin a Pup?
    25

I admit I’m a sucker for having a dog in the house. Growing up my dogs lived in a kennel, and I always pined for the day when I could have a pooch in the house. Well, now I do, and I wonder if I’ll ruin Pritch's chances of becoming an excellent hunting dog as she matures. You don’t have to venture far to find an opinion on the subject.

I am for letting my dogs in the house whenever I am home. And the wife does the same. But my grandpa had a pointer that only saw the inside of a building when it was at the vet... It was the best dog I ever hunted behind... and probably the best he had hunted behind too! I dont think letting them inside or keeping them outside is bad either way.

  • Chad Love: The Six-Word Story Contest
    508

The legend goes something like this: Ernest Hemingway and a companion were sitting in a bar somewhere (As Hemingway was wont to do) when a bet was made. Hemingway's companion, the story goes, challenged him to write a complete story in six words (or ten, the details vary with the telling) or less.

The result was a masterpiece of brevity that reads thusly:

For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn.

In the words of the late John Candy in The Great Outdoors. Bear, bear, big. big... big bear. After all the bear is kinda hunting him right?

  • Cermele: My Two Favorite Knuckleheads

Though very short-lived on U.S. television, the British comdey show "Trigger Happy TV" was always a favorite of mine. It's sort of a "Candid Camera" concept, where the film crew shoots the actors doing whacky things in public to get the reactions of passersby. Check out the clip below. I think you'll enjoy it, because although it's ultmately a spoof, the acting portrays very real characteristics of fishermen.

I remember my moms first fish. I was just a boy but my dad was trying to teach her to fish. He put some power bait on a hook and threw it out for her. She was sitting their talking with dad, I personally dont know what they where talking about because i was about 100 yards away. All the suddden i hear screams, very loud and intense screams. She had a fish on and let everyone on the entire lake know. People where actually scared at first. My mom lost the fish about 30 sec into the initial scream. Which made it worse cause she yelled at my dad for not helping her. Looking back im sure it was embarassing for my dad. And though un-called for when around 50 people, she felt the excitment and expressed it verbaly. It makes me laugh now thinking about it.

  • Petzal: The Four Toughest Men of the Old West
    73

In compiling this list, I’ve given myself more latitude then usual—from the post- Lewis and Clark era into the early days of the 20th century. I would not want to neglect one of these men and have his shade come after me in the next life.

Anyone who was a Texas Ranger is bad ass. I mean look at Chuck Norris! They are the best of the best!

We had a funny one. A calf was eating corn at our feeder and was so happy he jumped in the air. So we got a pic of a calf one doot off the ground! Also i got a pic of a mountain lion that has a deer by the throat walking infront of a feeder. This pick is not mine but was sent to me via cell phone. I put it on my page so yall could see it. Poor quality but you can make it out.
