Deer Hunter Kills College Student, Injures Two Others
(I hate posting stories like this, folks, but the news in the news. This is a heartbreaking tragedy that could have been avoided—and it serves as a sober reminder to us all to make safety the number one priority.)

almost missed the other articles. Schumer pro-hunting? wow

  • 10-Point Buck Attacks Upstate New York Man
    23

And when I say upstate, I’m talking way upstate. Namely, Moira, NY—only a handful of miles from the Canadian border and just down the road from North Bangor, where I grew up. I can tell you, there is not a lot for the deer to do up there, so I’m not surprised to read about one getting into trouble, but this was uncalled for. From the Watertown Daily Times:

It wouldnt seem like the area to have this problem, but sometimes people feed deer and those, losing fear of humans, are much more likely to do something like this

  • Why Southern Flour Makes the Best Biscuits
    17

Fresh, hot biscuits, anyone? It’s hard for me to imagine a meal in any fishing or hunting camp without some of these tender, flaky morsels soaking up melted butter or swabbing a plate clean of that last bit of gravy. There have been days--and this might be one--when I’d kill for a good biscuit.

For dissing Martha White I am cancelling my subscription to F&S havent you heard they make better biscuits cakes and pies ok im pulling your leg but their support of bluegrass music is solid

  • On Squirrel Collaboration and Wasted Meat
    27

A guest post from Executive Editor Mike Toth.

Most of us well know the inverse relationship between hunters collaborating on a squirrel and the squirrel itself. That is, the more the hunters collaborate, the less squirrel there is when the shooting is over. This rule was made abundantly clear earlier this week when Senior Editor Colin Kearns and I went after bushytails on a Wildlife Management Area in central New Jersey.

Jersey is a shotgun-only state (with exceptions for muzzleloader), and my favorite squirrel load is ...

BTW, one thing about this story is that it honestly reports that the two of them got two squirrels grand total. I find there are plenty of hunters who find it unbearable to think they might hunt squirrels and have to admit they only got one or even none. Not macho enough! That, though, is just hunting. It ain't about filling the game bag all the time. If you are a true outdoorsman you still have a ball.

so many opinions! I disagree with a lot of the above. There is no problem using a 12 guage, and I still say the .410 is for experts in its use and not for most of us. You do *not* tear up game by using #4 or #6 shot. The opposite is true, with #8 or #7&1/2 you get denser shot patterns that tear up the game more at normal range and wimp out at longer range. #4,5, or 6 is correct shot size for squirrel. As the article mentions, poor shot placement due to the squirrel moving when you shoot is really the problem. You can be pretty close, aim for the head, and get a pretty clean shot [maybe the less meaty front end in general will get too much shot]. But if that dude moves...

  • Special Report: On Coyote Attacks and the Death of Canadian Folk Singer Taylor Mitchell
    39

On Tuesday, October 27, two coyotes mauled 19-year-old Taylor Mitchell on a hiking trail in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Although Mitchell was hiking alone when the daylight attack occurred, two nearby hikers heard the commotion and called 911. Officers responded in time to shoot one of the coyotes.  Airlifted to a Halifax hospital, Mitchell died of her injuries the next day.

ChuckG, can't you see how important it is that wolves and coyotes have fear of humans? If the park was allowing the wrong kind of activities [letting people feed them] it makes it even worse. Allow some hunting and this sort of thing will stop.

  • Wolf Hunters Quickly Bag Quota in Southern Montana
    11

    From the Helena Independent Record:
Montana's statewide wolf hunting season on Monday came to an abrupt halt in the southern portion of the state, only one day after it started.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks ordered hunting closed in Wolf Management Unit 3 a half-hour after sunset Monday. . . .

I don't know what SSS means.
