I suppose it would be worth a try if you were stuck without anything else to use, and wanted to empty a cartridge, but if you are thinking ahead to take something there are better fire starting materials to pack. I would suggest either a commercial tungsten firestarting stick, a 35mm film canister with dryer lint, or extra fine steelwool to start and also, like buckmaster said a piece of logstarter. Another thing that I always carry with me is a couple of the 'joke' kid's birthday cake candles that start back up when blown out.
I release fish when I choose to, but I will not fish in a catch and release section.

I agree with the less expensive route as in zebco or ugly stick. But as far as the spongebob/ disney character fishing set-ups, get your kids a disney character lunch box if they want it, but do yourself and your kids a favor and stay far away from the disney character type fishing set-ups. They are very poor quality and will almost certainly set you and your kids up for a frustrating experience.

I have never done it (it is illegal here) but agree with both posts above. Bears are to the point of being overpopulated where I live, and loosing their fear of people. Don't get me started about PETA.

Wally, it CAN be banned, and it WAS banned. Did you hear the man? Also, there is a huge difference between banning and eliminating. No one said it would be, could be, or was eliminated. Alright, now that (I hope) we have that cleared up. 1. Battle lines have been drawn between antis and hunters as well as all supporters of the second ammendment, the likes of which have never been seen in modern times. 2. Those who are responsible are hiding in fear for their lives, for good reason. 3. "Poaching" has taken on a complete new meaning. To those hunters who used to be law abiding citizens, and the defenders of game laws, seasons, and bag limits, the word has no meaning, or is now used in a positive context in defiance of the law. 4. Gun and ammunition sales are at an all-time high. (get the idea? someone else take it from here)

I live in MA and believe it or not, it is not hard to get a concealled carry permit here, at least in the part of the state where I live, but you do have to take a hunter safty course and apply to the state through the local PD. I carry a S&W double action only (no external hammer) Airlite .357

Alot of stars in and of itself means they have made alot of postings and nothing more. There are those with alot of stars that are quite knowledgeable and will go out of their way to help you, and there are those with alot of stars that post alot of silly questions, make alot of silly comments and give alot of silly answers to questions they have no business answering. There are also those with alot of stars that fall somewhere in the middle. The good thing about someone who has alot of stars is that they do have a history on this site, and that allows you to go look at their other postings, and draw your own conclusion as to their knowledge on a particular subject.

Jeff, I agree with you 100%, in fact I've been meaning to post this myself. I hope there are others on this site that will also post their displeasure about this, and I hope it gets passed along to the editors. As much as I love receiving and reading these magazines, I am just about to the point of voting with my wallet and cancelling my subscriptions to all outdoor magazines that run these obnoxious adds. I am no puritan, and I certainly believe in their right to run whatever adds they want, but I too, believe it is not sending a good example to the thousands and thousands of young people who are reading these magizines. In fact, I am going to say right here and now that if it has not been resolved by the time my current subscriptions run out, I WILL vote with my wallet and not renew them. They may not care, and I'm sure they won't miss loosing one subscriber, but I feel that strong about it and can not in good concience support it.

Infantry, looks like you got about all the bases covered. I agree with the posters above on their suggestions, however I might suggest that rather than looking at it as a chambering question, maybe you might want to look at it as an 'action' question. For instance, if your .223 is a semi auto, you might want a bolt action 22-250. If it is bolt action, you may want a semi auto .223. Also, with prettymuch all bases covered, you might just want something that you 'like', such as a single shot high-wall or low-wall, or whatever that may be for you.

Sharkfin, I'm sure your intention is to help the young hunter, and I don't mean to be critical here, but I think you should have mentioned that you should never draw a bow (or aim a rifle) at anything you are not WILLING to kill. The key word here being WILLING, not NOT INTENDING. I have had game animals in my sights before and not taken the shot, but you must always be willing to take the consequences if Murphy decides to make his presence known. A couple questions he may want to ask himself before drawing might be, Do I have a doe permit in my pocket? Am I willing to cut short my hunting trip if I tag out on a doe? Lots of animals AND PEOPLE have been shot by other people who did not INTEND to shoot them. Just make sure you are WILLING before you draw or aim.

Buckhunter, head up I-15 to Cedar city Utah, then make your way east through Cedar Breaks and toward Panguitch Lake (you don't need to go to the town of Panguitch, just go toward the lake, you can find it on mapquest.com) Anyway, just before you get to the lake look for a sign that says "Mammoth Creek" - That is your spot. You can also go down a few miles and fish the stream below the lake. Have fun!

7.62X39 is really not a good choice for deer hunting. Personally I would never shoot a deer with a rifle chambered in that cartridge unless it was a survival situation and that's all I had. If you are getting the rifle for plinking or personal protection the 7.62x39 is fine, but if you are getting it to hunt with stick with the .270 or .308. If you are concerned about the cost there is plenty of cheap .308 ammo to be had.

What you have are called "accelerators", saboted .22 bullets. They were sold back around the '70's and 80's but I believe were banned because due to the sabots they could not be traced to the rifle. As you could imagine they are very very fast, although not really as accurate as say a 22-250. I do believe I heard someone say a while back that they were (back?) on the market. I also would be interested to know if anyone else has any information about them.
I've heard it said that the best gun to shoot coyotes with is the one you have with you. I would generally agree with that statement especially if the 'yote is too near your house or your henhouse. There is no shortage of debate on the 'best' rifle cartridge, but the truth is that any centerfire .22, or anything in the .243/6mm, or .257/.260/6.5mm range will work just fine with the proper bullet sellection being the most important thing as stated elsewhere on this thread. I would add one thing concerning the 00 buckshot that some believe as I do that you are better off with #2, #3, or #4 BUCKSHOT for coyotes because with there smaller size you are more likely to get more pellets where they need to be.
