Alright, junior hunters and anglers. Here's the first of many future installments of the Generation Wild Gear Giveaway. Each week we'll have a contest and give away some hunting and fishing gear to the winner.
This week, we're handing out a handy item from the kind people at Fishpond: a Microtrash Container. (After all, spring trout season is just about here, and no one likes a dirty stream.)
I was gonna say walleye at first glance but I'll guess Largemouth Bass. I think that looks more like a largemouth. I'm no junior hunter/angler though so don't include me in the drawing if it's for the teenagers.
Holding fast to its Day 1 lead, the USA Ice Team surprised a field of experienced international anglers and won the 2010 World Ice Fishing Championship in Rhinelander. "We thought we'd be happy with something in the middle of the pack," said team captain Mike McNett of Lombard, Ill. "Tell me I'm not imagining it."
Last Friday, I announced that we have a four-way tie in the Mathews Z7 contest. Buddyboy25, Ikedogg, mwmrtn, and taylor1 each correctly guessed the actual, to-the-inch, gross-score total of 685 inches. I also posted a tie-breaker buck—but that deer, unfortunately, proved to be a little too well-known, as Hank111 rightly pointed out.
So here is a new buck for our Final Four (as buckhunter has dubbed them) to guess at. Okay finalists, we’ll give you two looks at this one:

So we have a four-way tie. That’s right, buddyboy25, ikedogg, mwmrtn, and taylor1 each correctly guessed the actual, to-the-inch, gross-score total of all four bucks, which break down like this: Buck#1: 153 Buck#2: 151 Buck#3: 170 Buck#4: 211
There have been some questions popping up about exactly how we will determine a winner for the Mathews Z7 contest, so let me break it down. In the initial post (and in an early comment on the last post), I explained that your gross-score guesses for each buck should be to the inch--and that is how I will tally the four bucks’ actual scores—to the inch—to get the winning total. “To the inch” means fractionals are simply disregarded. Guessing a buck’s score from a photo is tough enough, so I didn’t want you to have to worry about fractionals. Still, many of you have given fractionals.
My final answer is the first post made.. and I'm sticking with it.. But as far as the tie breaker.. I think every person involved in the tie should have to score a 5th buck down to the fraction.. seems fair to me..
kolbster, My comment was intended to say that many people have used improper fractions. I was simply being facetious. I understand completely how the scoring works and best of luck to everyone.. Even people who put 4/8 as fractions..
Way back in 19 and 58, Winchester introduced a new cartridge called the .284 (which was its bore diameter) designed to bring .270-style ballistics to its hideously inaccurate Model 100 autoloader and its handsome, but nearly as inaccurate, Model 88 lever action. The round was a commercial failure, but it was a remarkable design, and while the public yawned at the .284, wildcatters went mad with joy and necked the thing up, down, and sideways.
I'm definitely a sponge to all talks about calibers like this one. I'm set when it comes to hunting calibers that I "need". But my next gun purchase will be one that I plan on turning into a tack driver over the 1000 yard line. I want a "fun" one for prairie dogs and targets. I'm pretty set on using one of savage's new accustock/accutrigger combos for the base but need to figure out a sensible caliber that I can easily get reloadables.
I think anyone who used the fractions 2/8, 4/8, and 6/8 should be thrown out. And sadly, there were many.. I even saw a 0/8 and I'm hoping that was a joke.
