I saw a llama in the deep woods hereabouts too. It was the talk of the deer camp. It had wandered waaay off a farm. We just let it be. On another occasion, I saw a car with a goat tied to it on the NY State thruway during the southern zone deer season. Guy looked happy with his trophy.

I did the exact same thing on the evening of Sept 27. Shot my first deer with a bow just before dark in the rain. I thought it was at 30 yds, but ended up pacing out at 45 yds. I hit it good but low and well forward. The buck ran back to the woods and snapped the protruding end (about 6" including broadhead) of the arrow off on a tree. We searched, no blood. Came back in the A.M. first light, no sign, no nothing. Frustrated, my friend and I scoured the woods all morning and gave it up. I can only hope the wound was not fatal. I feel your remorse, Tony167n. I intend to work on my distance judging, for one thing. Wish I could take that shot back.

I replaced my factory choke tubes with stainless ones from Trulock. Great value for the money and lots of selections. They have tubes for almost every make of shotgun I can think of. You can find them at www.trulockchokes.com Good luck!

I bought a Khan 12 ga. O/U at Gander Mtn two seasons ago for use in the swamps. It is a working mans gun with matte finish and turkish walnut wood. It cost $250 and has been well worth it. I replaced the choke tubes with stainless steel Trulock chokes because the factory ones cracked with 3" steel loads. All I know is it works good and I would rather drop it in the spooge than my browning.

I knew an old timer that drilled an antler on a great buck. Neat little 1/4" hole right thru the main beam. It stopped the critter long enough for him to drop it. Had to make its head spin, for sure.

Say something true? The truth is, those of us who enjoy the out doors mostly want to be left alone. We are whats left of human hunter gatherers and recognize that the way of this world is that our votes register as futile, and that the greedy ones almost always prevail. This has gone down historically and will repeat itself until the end of time. All sides of all issues can rant and rave forever to no end. The only fix is in faith and prayer.
Q:Is catch and release fishing any more ethically defensible than kill it and grill it?

I watch "catch and release" bass fisherman pull bass off their nests, boat them, then release them all the time in the early spring. Meanwhile the bluegills, etc. loot the unprotected nest. Maybe I'm wrong, but when I fish,or hunt, its to catch and use the creature. Otherwise I'm content to leave them be.

I think one example of a good hunter is someone who can let a mature buck go by in favor of dropping a doe out of an over populated herd. Or one who will specifically target drakes in the duck swamp. In other words, one who has their fingar on the pulse of the area in which they are hunting.
When I was young, I tried loading steel ball bearings in a shot shell and firing the load thru my Dads Lefever single shot shotgun. Ruined the gun. I wish I had asked questions first. Like Big O says, there are no stupid questions.
As a farm kid, I wore out a BB gun hunting english sparrows. Kept the farm cats well fed with them. Yet, the population never seemed to decline. I would say go for them.

Many counties, at least in New York state, feature websites with links to Real Property services. Locally here, we are able to access tax maps overlaid on recent GIS aerial photos complete with owner data. It sure is convieniant, though kind of feels like "Big Brother".

Try to get your hands on a canoe or some kid of boat. I use live shiners early in the season, either still fishing with a bobber and the bait hovering over structure, or slowly drifting by structure and casting a bait hooked thru the lips. Rapalas work great too, until the weeds get thick. My $.02 worth.

I have a new ruger hawkeye in .270 and an older model ruger tang safety .270. Both are great guns for what I spent on them. I also have a 25-06 on my Thompson Center encore, which I just got, and I really like it for the recoil is negligible.

I have the muzzle loader barrel and two rifle barrels for my encore and all of them are scoped. I found that I needed to use a tighter hinge pin in order for them to maintain accuracy when switching the barrels, for the factory hinge pin on mine was sloppy. My trigger was good, but other people I know had to do work on theirs. I replaced the hammer spring on mine, for the factory one was too weak to function consistantly with a hammer extension. After all this tweaking, I now have a rifle that shoots great with all three barrels and functions flawlessly. I also spent a pile of $$ to get there. A great website to visit for info on these rifles is Mike Bellms TC's at www.bellmtcs.com To sum it up, this is one gun I'll never get rid of.
Q:What are the best ice fishing tip-ups, and what are the advantages of different types?
from VT Outdoorsman on 02.23.09

I have been using the same dirt cheap wood tip ups for 30 + years. All that is needed is a sturdy, well attached spool that wont break off if a big one strips your line before you get to it. The expensive type that lie flat on the ice can get lost if there is a lot of snow drifting.
