My cousin and I are having a great time shooting honkers out of our newly built pit blind( aka "The Office"). There is nothing better than being able to sit in a nice lawn chair while your coffee is resting on the shelf next to you and the roof is protecting you from the elements all while harvesting big Canada geese. Both of our dads' thought we were crazy for building it until they experienced the comfort it has to offer. I am now waiting for the colder weather to drive more waterfowl to our area.

If you are wanting to shoot 3.5 in. shells then I would go with the Beretta Extrema II or the Benelli Super Black Eagle II. Both of those auto loaders work extremely well, but I would give the SBE2 the nod just for the better recoil reduction system. Both of these guns are soft shooters, but for the 3.5 in. magnums you will start to notice a little difference; which for 3.5's a little less felt recoil is much appreciated. If you are only going to use 2 3/4 or 3 in. shells, I would look at the Benelli Vinci or the Beretta AL391 Urika. Both of these guns have a 3 in. chamber and are touted as being highly reliable in adverse conditions. You will be happy with any of these four guns; it is all a matter of what type of features you are looking for and what feels best for you.

If you are looking for clothing and/or fishing equipment, a good place to start would be Cabela's bargin cave. A good time to buy shooting gear will be in about 3.5 - 4.5 months from now when hunting seasons are starting to wind down and retail companies are looking to make room for spring fishing equipment. A good rule of thumb is to buy your fishing gear during hunting season and your hunting gear during fishing season; this is when you are more prone to find better deals.

Q:What is the minimum amount Goose decoys do you need if your hunting in Wisconsin?
from deerhunter125 on 10.06.09

A lot of it depends on the time of the year. In the earlier part of the season the geese will be in smaller groups and 10-15 dekes will work good. In the later part of the season, the geese will be grouping in family groups and 5 or more dozen dekes may be the only way to get the geese interested in your spread. When putting out the smaller spread, you will want to group no more than four dekes close together, the geese have not yet started to group into larger families. In the later season you will want to make them into groups of 7-10. You want to make sure to leave room for incoming geese to land; the worst feeling in the world is having a flock come to your spread and land outside of gun range because there was no room for them to land on you.

That is a pretty tall order. From my own personal experience I have found that when it comes to goose calls, you get what you pay for. I spent between $25 - $45 on four goose calls that all sounded, and blew horrible. I decided then that is was time to bite the bullet and get something good, so I spent $110 on a Zink SR1 and have loved it since the first day I got it. If you would have taken the money I spent on the first four calls I could have bought one good one with money to spare. You will save money in the long run by buying a premium call to start with instead of buying cheap calls and end up buying a premium one the next year after you have thrown your money down the drain. That may not be the answer you want to hear, but trust me, I thought every one was feeding me a line of bull when they told me that cheap calls are almost always a waste of money. If you get into goose hunting hardcore you will understand this phenomina.

One of my best has to be the annual Thanksgiving pheasant hunt. It is the only time of the year that all the uncles, grandfather, dad, brother, and cousins can get together for a hunt. We usually do well harvesting between 8-12 roosters, but the real fun is after the hunt. When the birds and guns are cleaned and put away, we will enjoy a few cold ones and some homemade wine while talking over the day's events and past times. I always cherish that day of the year and am very thankful of the opportunity for us all to share the field.

I would jump up to a 3" shell. You have to remember that geese are a very tough bird and it takes a good number of pellets to bring one down. The 3" shell will offer a greater payload and an increase in velocity. These two factors will increase your chances of a clean kill versus cripples. The #2's should work fine as long as you are using them over decoys where you will be shooting less than 30 yards, past thirty yards #2 shot (especially in steel) loses a great deal of its velocity. If there is a possibility you will be shooting past 30 yards I would use at least BB and no less than a 3" shell.

What are you planning to hunt with this rifle, it can help narrow down the possible choices.
You probably never spooled your reel properly and therefore are being introduced to the lovely wind knot. I am assuming that you are using a spinning outfit, and that when you spooled your line you pulled the line off the spool instead of letting it unwind. After attaching the line to your reel spool, you then lay the line spool flat on the ground (usually label side up) and then reel the line onto your reel spool. This will reduce wind knots, pack your line onto your reel spool more evenly, which all inturn allows you to get maximum performance out of your reel and line.

Q:Is a 3 1/2 load better than a 3 for waterfowl or will it not really matter?
from rippja on 07.21.09

This is one of the most debated topics amoung waterfowlers. There are two different options to look at when deciding between shooting the 3.5in or the 3in. Companies that make both shells to hold the same payload; will offer a difference in velocity. There will usually be little difference, 50-150 fps, which when shooting steel, the velocity drops quickly and you are not really gaining much of an advantage. Where the 3.5in. shines is its ability to hold the larger payload (1 1/2 to 1 3/8 ounces) versus the 3in. loads holding generally 1 1/4 ounces, but producing similar velocities across the board. If you are trying to decide between the two for a velocity advantage I personally think you are wasting your money on the more expensive 3.5in. shells; however if you are looking to throw a larger payload down range there is a definative advantage for the 3.5in. shells. To give you and idea; there are 72 steel pellets per ounce of BB sized steel shot. In a 1 1/4 ounce 3in. shell that equates to 98 pellets, in the 3.5in. 1 1/2 and 1 3/8 ounce loads that would be 114 and 122 pellets respectively. Another thing you have to look at is how well your shotgun patterns the different sized payloads. In the gun I shoot it will pattern a 3in. 1 1/4 ounce Winchestern Supreme better than the 3.5in. 1 1/2 ounce load; which I use for shooting over decoys with a max range of 30 yards. If I will be pass shooting my gun shoots a better pattern with the 3.5in. 1 1/2 ounce load of Federal Black Cloud better than the 3in. 1 1/4 ounce load at a max range of 45 yards. The best thing you can do is try out different choke and shell combinations to decide what your gun shoots the best.

I have heard you should not use handloads in your personal defense weapon, beacause you could cook up a load that is more devastating than factory ammo. It could be seen as cruel and unusual punishment if you shot someone that broke into your house and tried to kill you. The way I look at it you can't go wrong by practicing with your handloads and then at night have you magazine ready with hydrashoks, glaser rounds, or some hornady FTX.

If done properly, you probably won't have to save up much money for your new rifle. However, if you lacked insurance, then I would buy the less expensive rifle to hunt with. If you are a good hunter, the money you save by not having to buy meat and the trade in value of your current rifle should be enough to buy the model you wanted for next season.

If you are going to use the gun strictly for varmint hunting, then I would get the .22-250; it is ballistically superior over the .223. I know that you reload, so the prices of factory ammunition will not play a factor in this decision. However, if there is a chance that you may want to use this gun for something other than varmints, you will have to side with the .243. It's just my opinion (and in many places it is legally stated) that the .24 caliber is the minimum caliber for deer sized game.

When I am hunting over decoys I will use Winchester Supreme 3" BBs. If I am pass shooting I will use Black Cloud 3" BBs. I shoot both out of a Briley IM choke. The Winchesters pattern great out to about 30 yards, hence hunting them over decoys, before it starts getting spotty and the Black Cloud will put an average of 17 pellets in the 10" circle at 45 yards, which makes them better for the longer range pass shooting.

I have Fireline Crystal on all my spinning rods and I love the stuff. Like it has been said above, you want to put some mono backing on your spool before you fill it with Fireline, if you store your rods in the garage and there are large temp. changes it causes the line to slip on the spool. Switching from mono to Fireline has added about 20% more length to my casts, when I need it, and I have yet to get any wind knots with it. I have always used the Improved Clinch and have not had any problems with that knot. When fishing in the Maumee River I tend to bend and break more hooks getting out of a snag then breaking the line (20lb test). I really like this line, very sensitive, no stretch, and extremely hard to cut.

I don't see anyhting wrong with using a crossbow during the archery season. It gives more people the ability to go out and enjoy the open air, plus it helps raise the number of people who buy licenses. I personaly don't think there should be any laws or restrictions against using them. It would only be fair to restrict inline muzzleloaders during primative season if you are going to restrict crossbows from archery season.

I always figured that for every big boy I see there are two I don't, so there is no reason to lay claim on a deer, or any other animal for that matter. If someone shoots a deer you have been specifically hunting, so be it. Life is too short to get all bent out of shape over someone who shot a buck that you saw once, two months ago.

The lake we went to back in 2007 (Tony's Lake, Airdale Fly-in, in Wawa, Ontario) the pike were so aggresive you could catch them on almost anything. I used Hula Poppers, Jitterbugs, buzz baits, jig and tail, Little Cleo, and assorted Rapalas. For the Little Cleo, the best size I used was the 2/3oz. spoon in silver/orange and gold/red. The Rapalas seemed to catch the bigger pike Husky Jerk (HJ12 and HJ14), Original Floater (F11, F13, and F18), Jointed (J13), X-Rap (XR12), and the Skitter Walk (SW08). If you can handle the misquitos, try going out at dusk with a surface lure and hang on tight, the strikes will be outstanding.

Whenever we go walleye fishing at the local resevoir, we tend to catch a fair amount of catfish when trolling a worm harness. I have also caught them on a Wallydiver and witnessed my cousin catch one on a 2/3 ounce Little Cleo in green and silver.

This site will help you out. http://www.bassfan.com/tips_article.asp?ID=196 It is important to remember that on a spinning outfit, you do not unwind the line off the spool by using a pencil, you will strip the line off the spool so it feeds out in the opposite direction the reel spool is winding.

from A.Johnson_08 on 04.13.09

Of course I dress in layers. However, what works best for me is under my outer layer I wear a waterproof jacket and pants, should be silent, and it keeps the wind out and the warmth in. If it gets too warm, you can always take it off. Also, when you hike from your vehicle to the stand, make sure to shed as much clothing as needed to keep yourself from sweating, once you sweat, it will be very hard to stay warm.

I have yet to find the one color that will always work for walleye. The best thing to do is have a good assortment of soft plastics and colored jigs so you are able to switch combinations util you find what works. As for depth, I would buy a fish finder, walleyes will swim at different depths on different parts of the lake. Temperature, wind, water clarity, barametric pressure, cloud cover, time of day, and structure will all play a factor on how deep the walleyes are, hence the importance of a fish finder. I have always found that using a 1/8 ounce jig with a 3 inch worm works the best for me. You can snip off part of the twister tail's body to fit the jig, but you still get the good action of a longer tail. You will then use split shots to help you reach your desired depth, as a 1/8 ounce jig is fairly light when you are trolling or in heavy current.
The Rapala Husky Jerk, has boated me more fish, but I really enjoy using the Subwalk on Pike.
I have always used raw shrimp and fish it off the bottom, it stays on the hook well.
Reid, I can't say as I know anyone that shoots geese with 6 or 7 shot, that is a very light load even if you were shooting Heavy Shot, even then with that I would not go lower than 3 shot on geese; which would be limited to shooting decoying geese at less than 25 yards. The smallest shot size I use are #2 in 3in. Winchester Supremes when I hunt decoys and BBs in 3 or 3.5 Black Cloud for pass shooting.

I have found out the hard way that the more you spend on a scope the better it is. You will save money in the long run by purchasing a good scope right off the bat then buying 2-3 lower grade scopes for the same rifle. I would say that a good comparison for the .30-06 would be to shoot a light 3" or a heavy 2 3/4" 12ga. load. That should give you an approximate idea of how much recoil it will have. Also, you need to remember that felt recoil is different for everyone due to the fact of the positioning of the gun in one's shoulder, the person's physical build, whether or not the gun fits the shooter, and what type of clothes the shooter has on at the time.

The river I fish is very shallow, therefore we do a lot of site casting. The lure that works best for me is a small (1.5 inch) crawdad. While they are sucking the sludge off the rocks you cast it about 15-20 feet in front of them and bring it right to their nose. When they don't scare from the splash of the lure, they are very skiddish, I would say I hook up with them about 70% of the time.

First of all, The spring season starts April 20 and ends May 17. The limit is TWO bearded turkeys. Each turkey permit is $24, the real killer is the non-resident annual license fee of $125. In the Spring Season you are allowed to hunt turkeys from 1/2 hour before sunrise to Noon. I live in Northwest Ohio and we have been seeing turkeys around my place for only the past 5 years, they were introduced. The population around here has been growing, the other day my brother took a cell phone picture of 25-30 birds in the field across the street. You can catch both pike and walleye on jigs, the hard part is taking the time to figure out what color combination works best. I would also try shallow and deep diving Rapalas and cast some spoons for the pike by the reeds. Don't be afraid to try some radical color combinations, sometimes it takes yellow and pink to gain a fish's attention whereas you and I would think that a more conservative black and green presentation would work best.

It all depends on what type of cover you fish and water clarity. If the water is clear as gin with light weeds they I would use a 15-20lb fluorocarbon. If you are fishing in stained water with a lot of stumps and heavy weeds you might look at a good braid in the 45-65lb range. It is most inportant though to make sure your line is suited for the water clarity.

In essence they will be able to track the sales of nearly all ammunition plus raise the prices in order to privide maintenace on the machines that make ammuntion. This act would also make it illegal to own ammo that wasn't coded past the date of Jan 1, 2011. I don't know about reloading ammo, but my guess is that it would make it nearly impossible, probably unlawful, to reload your own stuff. In my opinion though I don't see this act passing. Right now the Dems. have their man in office so they are all trying to take a shot at bills they would like to see passed. Putting a serial number on every round of ammunition is just not feasible, the mainframe computer that would need to be constructed in order to hold all the information for when the round was made, by who, sold to who, and when it was sold would be would over load so quickly that its not possible. I don't think we are going to have to worry about this though.

Petzal is just fulfilling his part of the deal. Everytime a gun company or gunsmith lends to Petzal a rifle to test he has to learn everything about it, test its functionality, and then hold up his end of the bargin (give it some print time). Every gun that goes to F&S will undergo the same process whether it is a $125 .22 or a $25,000 custom rifle. I don't understand why he is catching so much flak for doing his job. I am sure there are a lot of rifles he could write about, but some are more interesting than others.

There is a type of insect that will eat the hair off your mount. One way to get rid of them is to deep freeze your mount (about -10 F) for a few hours to kill the insect and eggs. The other option is to try a flea and tick spray, it should kill the insects but not the eggs so you will want to do it about every three weeks for about five treatments. Those insects can travel from mount to mount so make sure to check over your other mounts.

I would just make sure that you put it up at least a few weeks before the season starts so the deer can become accustomed to it, if the even notice it.

I have seen exactly what you are talking about and it's unfortunate that some folks feel the need to take advantage of the system. I hope that for the customer's sake, you, I, and the other F&S subscibers/website users, that the editors look at the quality of the answers and comments that a person gives before handing out testing gear to the fellow with a high point total. If a person cannot articulate a good comment or answer on this website, then how in the hell will they be able to give a competent gear review in a national publication?

It sounds like you might have an shotgun made by the Eclipse Gun Company in Belgium. They imported shotguns from 1871-about 1900 to a store called Folsoms. After the Folsoms store closed it's doors they continued to market other models of shotguns from 1905-1957. They were a pretty common shot gun at that time and there are still lots of them around. If you barrel is marked "Laminated Steel" it is one of the older ones. Unfortunately they are not worth all that much; depending on the condition, $140-$550.

Jim in Mo: If he was shooting Winchester Balistic Silver Tips, those are moly coated Nosler bullet. If thats the case, those bullets are designed for rapid expansion, if he hit the heavey bones in the shoulder there probably was not enough energy to allow the bullet to travel much further in the body cavity; thus only making its way to one lung.

Hogs are always a threat because they can take over and populate new areas very quickly, but I would say one of the most overlooked animals would have to be geese, especially the snow goose. Geese will eat a lot of food for their size, I believe this to be the reason why I have yet to have a farmer turn me down when I ask to goose hunt his fields, they can quickly strip the land of ground cover in the spring when they eat the shoots of new plants, grasses, and crops.
For hunting I like to watch Tred Barta or American Bird Hunter with Tom Knapp. When it comes to fishing I absolutly love watching Last Cast with Shaw Grigsby, this show is pure entertainment, or Hunt for Big Fish with Larry Dahlberg.

If you are pass shooting and your range is a little longer, 50-60 yards, I would use nothing smaller than BB. However, if you can decoy the birds and they are landing at your feet go with #2. Out of my Benelli, I will use Federal Black Cloud 3.5in BB for pass shooting and Winchester Supreme HV #2 when I am hunting over decoys. I have found that these two loads pattern the best out of my Briley IM choke for their respected situations.

http://www.ontariowilderness.com http://www.hawkair.com On the ontario wilderness site I have been to Tony's lake. Excellent walleye fishing, especially in the Oba river. If you like pike fishing this is a great lake for it as there are pencil reeds surrounding almost the entire lake. It is not uncommon to catch 120-150 pike in a day if thats all you want to fish for. As for the Hawk Air site I don't know how that lake will be, we are heading to their cabin on Easey Point here in August, but they are very reasonably priced and very nice over the phone.
