A 12-point buck shot Nov. 5 in Sheboygan Falls, Wisc., will almost certainly become the new Pope & Young world record typical whitetail and has a strong shot at toppling the Milo Hansen buck from the top spot in the Boone & Crockett record book as well. The buck was taken by Michael Gregoire on his brother’s farm. It was 4 1/2 years old and grossed 217 5/8 inches typical when green-scored by an official Boone & Crockett scorer.
Sheboygan Falls is the town I grew up in. That buck was shot less than a mile from my uncles house, he saw it at 8 yards and judged it to be in the 180's. He was wrong.
I’ve heard it said that a good duck dog at work is poetry in motion. Well, let’s see how many duck dog owners know poetry. Our contest is simple. Give us your best Haiku involving a duck dog—past or present, real or fictional. The winner will receive an Echo Prime Meat Call worth a whopping $140 and seen in the pages of Field & Stream.
Last week, I posted a blog featuring the latest installment of F&S Hook Shots filmed on the Susquehanna River during a smallmouth trip. In the video, our guide Eric Kerber talks about a new lure from Sebile called the Magic Swimmer. While I have been and always will be a great advocate of classic Rapala and Rebel Minnows for smallies, I have to admit this new Sebile stuff is pretty wild and has a shimmy like you wouldn't believe.
Long before she was my wife, before I knew her actually, Megan named her chocolate lab puppy Jest Fur Elise. This is her official AKC name, its after her sire and Megan's favorite classical song, Fur Elise by Beethoven. We call her Ellie, smelly Ellie, Ellie bean, Beany, Beaner, and Elise marie when she gets into trouble. Our other lab was a rescue and he came with a name, Remington. A little over done I think but that's what it is. We call him Remmy, Rem Bone, bone head (he is kinde thick headed) and Remington when he gets in trouble.
Gov. Phil Bredesen vetoed legislation on Thursday allowing Tennessee’s 220,000 handgun-carry permit holders to go armed in establishments selling alcohol.
Alcohol cause poor decision making and the loss of fine motor skills, two things you need to operate a firearm safetly and effectively. I love guns, I enjoy shooting and hunting. I love alcohol a cold beer on a summer day at a ball game or a glass of fine bourbon at home. I do not mix the two, EVER.
Herewith, a rogue’s list of shoulder shredders, clavicle crunchers, retina wrenchers, and subdural hematoma hasteners that you don’t want to shoot. To give things a little perspective, a .30/06 in an 8-pound rifle produces 21 foot-pounds of recoil; a .375 H&H, which maxes out most shooters, comes in at 40.
.700 H&H: This is the cartridge for those who think the .600 Nitro Express is kind of...wussy. 1,000-grain bullet at 2,000 fps, 8,900 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. In a 19-pound Holland & Holland double rifle, 109 foot-pounds of recoil. A friend of mine who has shot one assures me that it’s unmanageable. Pull the trigger and the muzzle points at the sky while the butt ends down at your belt. Also, the rifle costs over $200,000.
So where do the 12 gauge, 1 oz, 1600 fps slugs that we all shoot around here fit in, or the 3 1/2 inch steel goose loads, or the 3 inch turkey loads. I have no experience with any of the calibers listed above but plenty with these shotgun loads, where do they stack up?
As I navigate the many pitfalls that come with training a gun dog I often wonder what’s the biggest mistake an amateur can make. Here’s an example of one of my errors that I feared would cost me big time.
One of those can be a bad introduction to birds, many years ago we were training our little springer Annie and had obtained a few pheasant hens from a local game farm. Our trainer friend put out a bird and then told the guys with the guns to "make sure this one goes down hard." Point being that he didn't want a live bird pecking this pup in the nose on her first retrieve. Well, I was a little rough when I put the bird out and broke its wing. When Annie found the scent she took off, flushed the bird (which couldn't fly) and chased it down until she caught it. She proudly retrieved the live bird and turned a potentially bad situation into a positive (and hilarious one.)
When I first thought up the idea for the six-word story contest I expected the usual response my blogs generate: a dozen or so comments, the obligatory question about which picture at the top is me (yes, sir, I am indeed the "slack-jawed hillbilly" on the left...) and that one guy who always chides me about my alleged bashing of the Dubya/Darth Cheney administration (Do you maybe have me confused with Bill Maher?).
dotcomaphobe, I have had the complete opposite experience with braid vs. mono. I get fewer backlashes with braid and when i do i find them very easy to un-tangle.

Chad Love: Six-Word Story Contest Winner42

I guess mine wasn't that good.
Merwin: The Great Braid Debate14
There hasn’t been much discussion of braided lines--so-called superlines--around here yet, so here are a few comments for openers.
dotcomaphobe, I have had the complete opposite experience with braid vs. mono. I get fewer backlashes with braid and when i do i find them very easy to un-tangle.
