Properly managed timber harvest improves habitat and browse for a variety of species including deer, elk, and grouse. There is little to eat underneath evergreen canopies. National Forests were not chartered to be a playground for ATV's and offroaders either. I have not seen issues where I live and play, but can't speak for every place. Maintained NFS roads provide good access to a lot of land around our parts.

I have a Bushnell spotting scope that I received as a gift a few years ago. It is too bulky to hunt with and it's OK at the range, but at higher power, the resolution is poor and not much use late in the day. I have a Burris compact spotting scope that I use sometimes that works well. I let the wife's school kids play with the Bushnell looking at the swans and birds. I'd say a decent quality spotting scope starts out at about $1,200.

While most of my rifles wear variable power scopes, they are pretty much fixed power in the field. I usually set my variable somewhere between 3x and 5x depending on where I am hunting at the moment. I eldom if ever change a scope setting in the field. Most of the time, you have 3 seconds to shoot at an animal before they move, bust you, or you get shaky. I never waste that time messing with scope setting. Spot, decide, shoot. I would never feel handicapped with a 4x or 6x fixed power scope. I do like the higher power for ange work.

I have witnessed what the venerable .348 Winchester will do on deer and elk when loaded with Barnes Originals and factory loads. It is an excellent short to medium range cartridge in a lever rifle. Great dark timber cartridge! If I ever see one at a decent price, I will snatch up a Winchester Model 71. However, it is not a quantum leap from my .358 Win Savage 99. The .325 WSM looks like a pretty good round on paper, but not enough better than my .35 Whelen when loaded with 200+ grain bullets. I have to say that since I have never seen one in the field. The .325 WSM and .300 WSM are the only two WSM offerings that I personally would consider buying, not that there is anything inherently wrong with the others, JMO. I would venture to say that either one will put the smack down on anything hit properly!

Most 2-7x33mm to 40mm scopes have the best (widest) field of view when set to their lowest power setting and enough magnification for longer shooting at deer sized targets. There are so many good scopes out there, so you have to pick a price point and go from there. An excellent choice under $200 would be a new Redfield, Sightron S-II, or Nikon. Dad is a doctor with limited time, but he has taken up waterfowl hunting to spend more time with his boys! I seldom take the boys without Dad along. They have the resources for all the gear, but Dad makes them earn it themselves. What a wise man he is! I have just felt honored to be able to pass a little something along. Now the teenage girls want to start hunting! Maybe Mom's next! The oldest boy is the only person who can handle my big black dawg other than me and my son since the dawg is quite contrary sometimes. I get a bigger thrill out of them shooting a bird than shooting it myself. I always hold my shots until they have fired at least once.

Make that 2 TONS! In the hands of the average hunter, a .223 centerfire is inadequate when cheap FMJ ammo is around for use by the ninnies. That is why many states have rules that require a .24 / 6mm caliber minimum with expanding bullets. Big O I would dispute your statement that .22's have killed more deer than anything. The .30-30, .30-06, and .35 Remington have put more deer on the meat pole than all the .22 centerfires combined. I'm with 007 for exactly the reasons he stated. In the hands of an experienced hunter/shooter with the right bullet, a .223 or .22-250 is certainly adequate, but not legal in many places. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. WMH

7mm Weatherby Magnum or .300 Weatherby or faster equivalent and lots of practice at shooting at MOP targets at that range....in the wind. And don't believe all the long range tales you hear. Verrify your range with a rangefinder and learn how to dope the wind. A guy I hunted with last week missed a mule deer 5 TIMES at 505 yards before finally hitting him (bang flop). In the 15-20 mph crosswind he needed 22-25 inches of correction with what he was shooting. When I asked him how much did he dope the wind, he answered, "Oh, I forgot about that." to which I replied, "How much do you think you should have applied". He had no clue.

Since he is a family friend, I would be honest with him and tell him that even though he paid $629 for it, it is not a collectible rifle and has not appreciated in value and being used, it is worth $550 to you. If he is a friend, I would not try to beat him up on the deal. If he needs $600 for financial reasons, let him sell it elsewhere unless you are willing to pay $600. If he is hard up for cash, he will never forget that he sold it to you for less than he really needed. No reason to bust up a friendship over $50.00. Now if he is just selling to finance another toy, that's different. Just offer him straight up the $550 and tell him you had rather not dicker with friends if he comes back with anything other than "yes".

All good info. I doubt you will save money on most cartridges unless you shoot a lot of ammo per year. I have some old calibers that ammo is not in abundance for or is very pricey; like 7mm Weatherby, .35 Whelen, .358 Winchester, .257 Roberts, etc. While I load for my .308 and .30-06, I doubt I save money enough on those to offset cost of reloading gear. I just saw an article in this month's Outdoor Life that compared the cost of reloading shotshells vice factory prices. Not much savings there unless you shoot a lot of clays. With the amount of ammo I shoot every year, I am not in it because of monetary savings. I do it because I CAN!

I've seen them come apart on elk and found jacket and core under the off-side hide and in the innards, but that was on a very dead elk! Based on what I have witnessed, I would say that it is an excellent deer bullet. Not so sure about the SST being a perfect bullet for elk since I prefer a full penetration that is more likely with a TSX, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, A-Frame, or similar bonded core bullet. JMHO

Looks like you have been getting "Short Changed"! According to the Federal Reserve website and my precise measurement, the U.S. dollar (actually all denominations) bill is 6 1/8" long. Older bills will actually measure about 6 1/16 due to wrinkling and shrinkage of the rag paper. But 6" is way good enough measuring fish!

Do you shoot with eyeglasses? My son wears glasses and can consistently shoot 2-2 1/2 inch groups with his 7mm Rem Mag rifle that I can shoot 1 inch groups with (on a good day). The center of his groups are always clustered about the point of zero! Way the heck better than MOP! Darn good enough! May not win a gold medal, but the elk never know the difference. If I shoot with my glasses on, I manage 2-3 inch groups sometimes with a MOA rifle, too. So that may be the issue here.

Forget WD-40. Start with a cotton rag like an old t-shirt with Remoil or similar and rub the oil in and just keep at it until the rust does not show anymore. If that does not work get some 0000 steel wool with some Remoil or similar on it and lightly buff it off. Keep the steel wool lightly oiled during the process. You might have to do it several times before all the rust is gone. Keep using clean steel wool and remove all traces and oil ater each scrub. If that doesn't do it, it might be time for a rust remover, which will remove the bluing too.

I would never recommend a single action revolver for a truck gun (assuming that means personal defense) nor an autoloader for a first pistol. And here's why: Although you seem to be an experienced and level headed guy from your many posts, but due to your age, you probably don't have the years of training to be immediately proficient with either a SA or autoloader. Also, a double action revolver is about as foolproof and reliable a handgun as it gets. The .357 mag is a fine choice for a first gun since you can get .38 Spl loads/reloads much cheaper and with less recoil than full house magnums. Get the Smith&Wesson or Ruger GP100 (good gun, but I don't personally care for their looks) of your choice. Practice, practice, practice and then consider a more complex autoloader. When it come to hammer time, nothing beats a DA wheelgun. Just my opinion, of course.

If you are a true sportsman, you will find ways to help leave the environment a little better than you found it without being an environazi. One thing we all should do is be mindful of oil and fluid leaks on our vehicles and repair as necessary. Homeowners should also make sure their septic system and drains are working properly as designed.

OHH Not to dispute your post, but BAD LUCK is the operative word I think. With the same bullet construction, I don't think 15 grains of bullet weight makes a measurable difference one way or the other. The difference between a 150 and 180 gr. is a bit more of a performance difference. I've only shot a couple of deer years ago with 150 gr Core Lokts and one cow elk with a 200 grain Core Lokt, so I am not a Core Lokt expert. I have only shot one little piggie (javelina) in my life, so I don't know what is the best medicine for hogs, but I'm betting that my 165 gr Triple Shocks out of the '06 will turn out the lights right now! I get an average of 2,623 fps MV with Federal factory loaded 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw's over the chronograph. The Remington factory loads don't come close to advertised velocity. I have fired Nosler custom 225 gr Partitions with less accuracy than the TBBC. I have bang-flopped several mule deer and killed bull elk out to 308 laser measured yards with it. I have never recovered a TBBC fired from my .35 Whelen - all pass through soon to be dead animals with massive wound channels. The .338-'06 may have better numbers in the books, but in my book, 'Hail to the King .35'! Step aside boys, the King is in the house!

I think the X-Bolts are nice rifles, but you can buy 2.5 Savage's with plastic trigger and bottom "metal" for that price. The finish on them is excellent and if they are like A-Bolts, pretty darn good shooters too. If I were spending $850 for a rifle, I would buy a good used Weatherby Mark V in that caliber. You might even find one new for a couple bucks more with the plain synthetic stock. Like the sign on the auto junk yard sez: "We all drive with used parts". Likewise, we all hunt with used rifles. Weatherby will repair or replace anything that won't shoot 1 1/2" groups. I personally would never spend that kind of money on any rifle with plastic parts. JMHO

Any firearm used in extreme cold should be cleaned thoroughly removing all grease and oil and only a very thin coat of a teflon based oil like RemOil reapplied to critical surfaces, like bolt lugs, and then wiped clean. Maybe a better dose of dry lube like graphite if it is an autoloader or a lot of shooting is anticipated. Also, even dry powdery snow and moisture from your hands can cause a bolt to freeze. Also, leave your rifles outside in a case to prevent condensation from your warm(er) tent or lodging. If it's that cold, I'm not out there!

Like Beekeper said, the 7mm-08 is a great deer round with light recoil with the lighter weight bullets and can easily "step up" with heavier loads. a friend of mine bought his duaghter a Model 7 in 7mm-08 a few years ago and she handles it just fine and she is under 5' and I bet she doesn't weigh 90 lbs soaking wet even though she was 17 at the time. A .243 is OK if you are never hunting anything larger than whitetails.

They are fun to lay lots of brass on the ground, but not very accurate for the most part. At open sight range they are acceptable, but definitely not a long range varminter. "Pattern" describes the groups my neighbor's Mini 14 shoots. NY blatantly disregards the 2nd Amendment rights of its residents. Burris broke the stupid law that should not be a law to begin with. There is a larger issue than carrying without a permit. Wow! Huge question there. For pass shooting, I like to use #1 or #2's. Over dekes I prefer #3 steel. I like the 12 gauge for versatility and ammo choices. I usually use 3" shells for ducks, 3 1/2 for geese sometimes. Lots of good gun choices out there. My favorite pump gun is a Remington 870, but the Benelli's are great too. I have an older S&W 1000 Super 12 Waterfowler that I like to use as well. Any good 12 gauge that fits you and has removable choke tubes is fine. I would stay away from the adjustable chokes as they tend to rust and freeze up. JMHO of course. "idduckhntr" can also give you some good pointers if he reads this post.

I hunt in WA, but usually in E. WA since it is usually very rainy in W. WA during deer season. GMU 101 and 105 by Kettle Falls and the Colville area have been my favorites for many years, but I have not hunted there in 5 years. The units over in the Okanogan are usually good for a mix of whitetails and mule deer, too. I usually apply for special permit hunts outside of the general season and they are usually all good. For elk, the 336. 340, 346 are usually fair depending on the weather driving the elk down from up high. I think there are more elk hunters than elk in any given spot. I gave up except on permit hunts and hunt in Colorado mostly for elk. The best place to kill elk is where there are lots of elk. The next best spot is where there are lots of elk.
My wife paid $1,040 for a Weatherby Mark V in 2002 as a gift to me. In today's dollars it would be $1,240. Almost to the penny what a new one costs today. The $389 I paid for my .35 Whelen in 1989 would be adjusted for inflation to $673 today. I believe you can still buy a M700 CDL in .35 Whelen for about that amount new. (CPI calculator, U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics) And that doesn't count the Leupold's perched atop both of them either.

Ditto on 'Beekeeper', 'Clay Cooper' and "007's" remarks above. With an appropriate bullet/load, the .308 Winchester is capable of taking any game out to 300+ yards (maybe not much farther is very practical). Back in the many years when I owned only one centerfire rifle, the .308 Win was it! Killed my first mule deer, (western) whitetail, and elk with a Model 700 ADL beater that I bought at a gun show for $200. It is a MOA shooter with handloads and Remington Core-lokts. I have never been a .270 or 7mm fan until recently warming up to a 7mm Weatherby Magnum. I have four .308 bore rifles, each in a differnt cartridge. But don't let anyone tell you that a .270 is not super duper deer rifle.

Good eye there, Sailor! To make a long story as short as possible, I entered the US Army at the request of my friends and neighbors via the Selective Service Board (draft) in 1969. Following infantry and airborne training, I had an exotic vacation to Southeast Asia and several other garden spots. I got out of the Army in 1978 and went back to school to complete a degree. Bored with civilian life, I tried to get back into the Army in an officer program but had no luck at that. I went in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer with a SpecWar option to be executed after my first sea tour in 1982. I could not pass the dive physical due to inner ear issues and problems with a knee, so EOD or Seal was off the table. I served the next 16 years on a frigate, three destroyers, a mine countermeasures ship, and various other staff jobs including the Sandbox until I retired from the USN in 1998. If I had known we were about to start another good scrap in the sandbox, I might have stayed a while. My wife of nearly 38 years keeps asking me when am I going to decide what I want to be when I grow up. And that there pilgrim is the rest of the story. It's your banner now! Carry it proudly! Listen guys, no way that soft lead pellets or plastic rat shot caps can ruin rifling in a steel barrel. I also don't load for my .30-06 for hunting loads because I found a perfect load that shoots extemely well. I do handload those for practice. Same for my .35 Whelen. The 0.020" of bullet diameter is not the issue. Neither is velocity. Bullet weight is almost double with a 100 gr .243 versus a 55 gr .223 centerfire. Weight equals mass and mass plus velocity equals penetration. Most states require an expanding bullet for good reason. Full metal jackets penetrate well, but don't usually cause enough vital organ damage to quickly dispatch game animals. There are plenty of folks on here that just love the .243 and a few that are vocal proponents of teh .223 Rem or .22-250 as a deer cartridge. I am not among either group. I am not fond of the .243 and am of the opinion that the .223 caliber is not an adequate deer cartridge. We have heard all the arguments for and against way too many times. I'm just glad that .223's are not allowed in the states that I hunt in so I don't have to deal with the issue. You'll just have to make up your own mind about it. Hopefully you won't leave a trail of wounded suffering deer in your wake.
shane I think every caliber that a Savage 99 has been made in is a great deer gun, except maybe the .22 high Power and the .410 shotgun combo barrel model. The three that we have are all good shooters: .300 Savage, .308 Win, and .358 Winchester. Ww591, Just an editorial comment on your post. I agree with your statement: "People who have never shot a 7mm mag will tell you about how its way too much power and it will blow the deer in half...". Many (not all) of the folks who bash 7mm magnums either have a) Never used one extensively, b) Never fired one, c) Have no idea what they are yacking about, or d) All of the above a, b, & c. For the best all around deer killer it might be a close race between a .30-30 and F-150! LOL

Hunter Education courses generally stress that autoloaders and lever actions are not the best action types for new hunters and shooters. Pump shotguns and bolt rifles are inherently safer and less complicated to operate safely. Price is generally lower also. I have been hunting 50 + years and I still hunt about 50-50 with autoloading and pump shotguns even today. Saw a couple of guys cussing and struggling to fix some malfunctions (including my son) on Sunday. So as not to offend anyone's brand loyalty and family heritage, I will just state that they were not Remington pump guns.

Any of the aftermarket choke tubes that have the little tabs or "ears" inside to strip or retard the wad defeats the purpose of the Black Cloud wad design. Patternmaster and others make tubes designed for BC loads. Or just use the smooth tubes that came with your gun and try it.
Neither are man-stoppers, but both are very deadly on homo sapiens. A double tap from a .32 ACP hollow point or Hydroschock or similar will dispatch an opponent. A bigger faster bullet is usually "better", but not necessarily required.

Federal Gold is a match target bullet not designed for hunting. Check the Federal Cartridge website for recommendations concerning that bullet. Match bullets do not generally have controlled expansion features and will either stay together and just punch a clean hole or fragment and not give the desired penetration. Check the ammo manufacturer's websites and catalogs. Most have excellent recommendations for cartridge use. FMJ's and match bullets are not designed for hunting. Good luck!

I'm not Clay Cooper ( I thank the Lord for that!), but I will give you my two cents worth on Hornady factory loaded ammunition. In my experience and personal observations, the Hornady ammo is substandard. It shoots poorly in two of my rifles and two of my hunting friends stopped using it because of accuracy issues. They both had used it for years. I had 2 misfires out of a box of Light Magnum 30-06 and 1 from a .257 Roberts load. I assure you there was nothing wrong with either rifle. I think it was due to improper headspace of the brass. Their brass is crappy and dirty looking as well. Hornady makes good bullets for reloading, but I will never buy their loaded ammo again, regardless of how much advertising they do or magazine articles they "sponsor", or bullhockey is written on here. A Federal loaded Barnes Triple Shock or Nosler Partition will get 'er done. Remington's Bonded Core Lokt Ultra or Swift Scirocco are good too.
I hunted elk with a .308 Win when I was even more destitute than I am today. With the fine bullets available today, it is fine. From what I have heard, a moose is not as tough to kill as an elk. Just keep your shots inside the 300 yard line and you will have a better chance of hitting vitals and all will drop dead if you take out heart or lungs.

Well Happy, it sure gets harder every year. Ever since my right knee has gone bad, it has been more of a challenge. I used to run 1.5 miles 3 days a week and walk one to two miles with the dogs most other days. One of my challenges has been to keep my weight down. I'm 6'5 (last time I checked) and weighed 242 this morning. My goal is 220 by July and 210 by November. My regimen now is walking 2 miles a day with my dogs, 30 minutes on the treadmill uphill mode, light situps and pushups. With the pushups, start doing them with hands on the wall or kitchen counter gradually placing your hands lower towards the horizontal as reps increase over time. I had a nasty fall on the ice before Christmas and am just getting back on the drill after gaining 10 pounds since hunting season. I quit smoking 15 years ago and pretty much leave the booze alone anymore, although I still enjoy a drink of good scotch or Tennessee sour mash whiskey once in a while. I leave the fast food alone except in a pinch and try to eat whole foods and organic when I can. I seem to feel much better that way. This old paratrooper ain't what he used to be either.

Clay As Beekeeper's radio host quoted, "My big old butt!" I have to call you on that one. A 175 Nosler Partition has a BC of .519 and when launched at 2,860 fps (factory load velocity data) MV, it is moving 1,299 fps at 1,000 yards and drops -313 inches from a 200 yard zero. Your .30-06 190 gr example is only moving 1,128 fps at 1,000 yards with your Hornady BT (BC .491) with a MV of 2,700 fps and it drops -377 inches at that range. You will have to "push" your MV over 2,950 with the .30-06 to catch up with that 7mm RM load, way the heck over any loads I've seen for the .30-06. That is a lot of pixie dust. Show me the money!

"Iron sights" are also called open sights and contain no tube, no lenses, no magnification , or illumination. Basically made from steel or aluminum alloy. from jlyon.24 on 01.21.10

The .308 Win is perfectly capable of taking moose. elk, or deer at sensible ranges. The .300 Win mag will give you about an extra 100 yards or so of effective range over the .308 Win. In my opinion, the .308 is a capable deer and elk rifle out to about 300 yards. Out beyond that, you are in .300 magnum territory and perhaps .30-06. I try to limit my .30-06 shots to 300+/- yards for elk. Same with the .308. I don't own a .300 magnum, just 7mm magnum. JMHO

I usually use the 3" loads for all waterfowl, but 2 steel is ok for close-in goose shooting. I prefer BB or larger for geese at any shooting distance. BB shot count is way lower in 2 3/4 shells. I only use 2 steel for ducks and will shoot a goose with 2 steel if he comes in close.

My preference is a Barnes TSX or TTSX for deer and the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw (not the new trophy Tip) for elk. I know that is 2 favorites, but I have had equal success with both. Both of those bullets have provided exceptional accuracy, complete penetration, large wound cavity, and an exit wound leading to bang-flops or run offs of fifty yards or less. I used to hunt with the Speer Nitrex ammo with the Grand Slam bullets with good success. There are many bullets out there that offer good performance. Those are just my personal favorites.

Spring or early summer is a good time to get a dog. Training is easier to start when the weather is nicer and it is easier to train a water gog when the water is warm. Puppies are like little kids, they get cold easily and only think about getting warm when they get chilled.
I have only seen a Frontier headstamp on the cartridge cases, not on the bullets per se. The case, primer, powder, and bullet are the components that make up a loaded cartridge. Some folks refer to the assembled "round" or cartridge as "bullet", but that is not technically correct. I believe ALL Hornady ammunition has Frontier stamped cases. Why I don't know.

I'm with Clay. If you or your rifle don't like Partitions, try 160 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw or Barnes Triple Shocks. A 175 grain bullet is too heavy to get good velocity. A good .30-06 180 grain load is better than a 7mm Rem Mag 175 gr. I have heard mixed reviews on Fusion loads. My son's rifle does not shoot them very well.

This has been pounded before, so it's like deja vu all over again. I predict that the overwhelming majority will tell you that the Remington 870 is the most used and reliable shotgun ever. F&S or OL published a survey of over a thousand hunters that overwhelmingly picked the 870. I don't care for the Mossberg and the BPS is difficult to disassemble/assemble compared to the 870.
I shoot trap and skeet almost every week in the summer to tune up for hunting season. I want to say that I'm no expert at either, but I routinely average 19 to 20 and occasionally hit 23 on a great day. I use the Federal or Winchester target loads in 7 1/2 or 8 shot, whichever is on sale or available at Wal-mart (cheapest @ 20.97 per 100 pack). I can't really tell the differnce in my performance with one load or the other. But then I'm not training for competition either.
Mine is 30 or more years old and works just fine (20 ga.)

I shoot a Smith & Wesson 1000 gas operated autoloader for trap shooting. It is comfortable to shoot 100 rounds a day and doesn't even have a good recoil pad, just the old hardened one that came on it. I also shoot with my 870 Super Mag just to keep limbered up with that one, too. The old S&W digests all loads from the lightest trap loads to 3" magnum steel shot with no adjustments or malfunctions. Easy to clean also. Just another reason that Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson are my two oldest friends!

The bottom line with the rifle is to get the one you like the heft and feel of. That is the one you will shoot the best, regardless of make. Hard to beat that old warhorse Howa/Vanguard, but I hear the S7W I-bolt and Marlin's are pretty good rifles. As I have posted earlier, I would recommend you not buy the bottom end of Nikon, Bushnell, Leupold, or Sightron. Take a look at the new U.S.A. Redfields made in Oregon. Start at least in the middle of the product line of the brands that have been mentioned above. Simmons, Tasco, cheap Bushnell's, and anything under $200 MSRP is suspect. Can't go wrong with a Nikon Buckmaster, Leupold VX-II, or Sightron S-II and the Bushnell Elite 3200 or 4200. Leave the lesser scopes in the store if at all possible. Buy a good scope and it will last almost a lifetime, that is until you see something you like better!

For 400 yards on deer sized game, none of the varmint calibers haul the mail in my opinion. The .25-06, .257 Wby, .270 and up will have the gusto required. However, it is fairly irresponsible to shoot at unwounded game at 400 yards except for the most practiced and experienced shooters. Too many of our fellow hunters are getting caught up in the magnum mania and long range sniping frenzy. 300 to 400 yards is the practical limit for the best shooters. 150 to 200 for the masses. JMO.

Hee Hee Hee! I started out the bug, but changed to windshield today! After a slow morning and coffee got cold, I radioed the scouts (Actually called my son on his cell phone) and they were calling for massive air strikes about 10 miles north of my spot. So I zipped thru a coffee stand, and 15 minutes later arrived at the scene to find him and six buddies talking smack about the 3 snows they had killed. After hearing that @%$* for long enough and giving Beekeeper a little jab via email, I headed for a friend's spud farm about a mile away and located about 5,000 birds. Put the downwind sneak on them and whacked 3 out of the flight pattern right away. After that, they were flying in tight groups so I never got a clean shot at a single. The limit is 4, and the game cops were thick in the area hitting trespassers, etc. so I never took another shot before some bald eagles busted up their tea party. All in all, it sure beat a day at the office today!

The .243 Win is the legal minimum in quite a few states. I guess that if the minimum wasn't good enough, it would not be the minimum. I prefer the .257 or .264's as a starting point, butthe .243 is fine for deer with a sturdy bullet of 90 to 100 grains.

Good grief! Every manual published in print or online has safe handloads for a .30-30, so why would you not use that data? The .30-30 is somewhat anemic anyway, so stick to published data unless you want to ruin your lever gun if that's what you have. There's no such thing as magic pixie dust for that cartridge. By the time you show excessive pressure signs, you may have damaged your rifle. Not worth it. If you want a high perfance .30 caliber, get a .308 or .30-06. The only handloads I ever used were from a friend that sold me the rifle and had worked up the loads with that rifle. I also pulled a few bullets and weighed the charges to verify his data. No disrespect to Mr. Cooper or anyone else, but make sure any loads are within manual published limits or start out with a reduced load that is and work up.

While Accubonds are way better than Ballistic Tips at weight retention, Hornady Interbond and Swift Scirocco have a little better weight retention according to several tests that I have seen. Accubonds did not shoot particularly well in one of my rifles, both factory 180's and handloaded 165's, so I didn't pursue them further but by all accounts they are an excellent bullet. If controlled expansion, high weight retention, and the deepest and/or pass thru penetration are desirable, go with Trophy Bonded Tip, Barnes TSX, Barnes Tipped Triple Shock, Barnes MRX, or North Fork bonded bullets. You will likely never recover one of those bullets on deer, but you will recover the deer with a massive wound cavity and exit wound with a fire hose blood trail. Of the last 5 deer and 3 elk that I have shot with one of those bullets, they either dropped in their tracks or I could see them go down from where I was shooting from. Ka-Whack!

In WA it is legal as long as the minimum square inches of blaze orange is worn. I wear an orange cap while sitting still too, but not when stalking in the timber. But in Colorado it is not legal. country road The only thing I ever killed whitetails with my .308 (closest thing to a 7-08 that I have) was with 165 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws and Speer Grand Slam 150 and 165 gr back when Speer made the Nitrex brand of loaded ammo. I still think the Speer Grand Slam and the Speer Hot-Cor SP would be a good choice. Since Mule deer are no different to kill, I highly recommend the Barnes Triple Shock in a 140 grain for 7mm. I shoot a 150 gr Tipped Triple Shock in my 7mm Weatherby for deer or elk, but honestly have not shot at a deer with that load. A 165 gr TSX in .30-06 puts them right down. A friend of mine's daughter has used 140 gr Core-Lokts with great success. I think Beekeeper could give you a better recommendation since he and his wife use 7mm-08 for deer.

A fair rule of thumb is that you will get about 40% of the live weight of a deer if carefully deboned so as not to have excessive waste. So, about 45-60 pounds from an average "large" doe. Less if you blow up a shoulder or ham with your high velocity, light-for-caliber, flimsily constructed, soft points moving at the speed of heat.

Don't forget about a good scope. If your scope doesn't cost at least $250, you are not giving your rifle the chance to perform well. Yeah, I know some of the cheap package scopes work for some of the readers, but from experience that is all wet! A POS scope, whether it is a Simmons, Bushnell, etc., will fail you at the most critical time or be too dark at dawn or dusk and you will miss a good buck. Also budget for a good set of steel mounts and rings. Leupolds are plenty good enough. There are some as good or better, but not for the price. Forget about those discount store cheap aluminum rings and low-end Weaver mounts. Spend an extra $25 and get a decent set of mounts and rings. Savage, Tikka, Weatherby Vanguard, Rem 700, Marlin (if good mounts are available) are all good first rifles.

I think you will need to stick with the modified choke and use a rifled slug. Most of the sabot slugs are designed to be fired from a rifled barrel, not a smooth bore. Many manufacturer's recommend a choke less constricting than 'full'. In fact, most slug barrels are cylinder bore or improved cylinder. I recommend you check the Remington and Federal catalogs and websites to get the proper choke/barrel recommendation for the ammo you choose. Then go to the range or set up a target and let it rip to see which shoots the best. JMHO

A 22 oe 23 inch barrel is optimal for cartridges based on any .308 Win or similar capacity case. A longer tube wil not buy you much for that powder capacity. if it shoots well, leave it alone. I don't recall seeing Remington, Ruger, or Winchester .243's with longer barrels. Weatherby makes 22- 26 inch barrels.

If you can stand the recoil, it'll kill 'em if you hit 'em. I sold mine not long after I bought it. Any .30 caliber, ie. .308 Win, .30-06, .300 Savage, etc., is enough for the species mentioned. The .338 Win Mag and it's high performance brother, the .340 Weatherby Magnum are great elk and brown bear calibers, but both have more recoil than I care to deal with since I tend to shoot a lot. Is it factory loads, military surplus, handloads, what? How old is it? How was it stored? If you cannot definitively answer each of those questions, to yourself not me, I would highly recommend NOT firing it. Obviously it has not been stored properly and if the origin is unknown, I would get or borrow a bullet puller, pull the bullets, scatter the powder outside in the wet grass, and pop the primers in your rifle, and then reload the brass. But if it has verdigris on it, I would trash it. I never shoot someone else's handloads unless I am more than a little confident of the loading practice of the individual. I have not run across that one yet.... If it is just a small quantity, why take chances of damaging the rifle, getting a bullet stuck in the bore, or worse yet, injuring yourself.

I would buy the .257 Weatherby only if you handload or intend to start. Ammo is hard to find in smaller stores and always expensive. A friend of mine in Montana uses his for everything that he hunts up to and including elk, although I don't think any of the .25's are best for elk or moose.
I would like to have a classic rifle in that caliber for collector purposes or a .22 Hornet barrel for my Savage 219 single shot rifle to complement the .30-30. Both calibers have no useful purpose for me other than plinking or a camp gun. Think .223 Remington and .308 Win!

Don't let anyone fool you, that Weatherby Vanguard is a great rifle for hunting. While I own two Weatherby's, neither are Vanguards, but I know several guys who have them and they like them and they shoot extremely well. Howa makes those rifles and everything that comes out of their factory is top notch. They made the Weatherby Mark V's for many years and Smith & Wesson shotguns among others. I have a Howa-made Mark V and it is just as quality and the U.S. made Wby Mark V that I have. The Vanguard is a little heavy for my taste, but if it suits you, then go for it! As for caliber, either of those .270's will get the job done equally well. The .270 Win ammo is probably a little cheaper and more widely available in out of the way places. If you shoot a lot, I'd stick with the .270 Win unless you handload or plan to. That rifle will shoot better than MOP with either load. Just make sure you can! Good luck hunting this season!

For the average hunter it's apples and apples. Both are good deer and big game cartridges. If you are a handloader, it's the .280, if not, go with the .270 Win. If you only hunt deer and hogs, the .270 is fine. If you are looking for a great all around cartridge with a wider range of bullet weight, go with the .280. No bad choice here.

The 100 gr TSX was not all that accurate in one of my .257 Roberts' until I seated them in a bit to the OAL length in the Barnes manual. Set them back .050 off the rifling and see what happens. Or switch powders. My 7mm Weatherby will shoot MOA with 150 TTSX's with RL 19 or IMR 4350. If you are obtaining adequate velocity, you might try reducing your charge slightly. My Weatherby .30-06 shoot Federal factory 165's into cloverleafs. I'll never do better so I don't try to handload for it.

I think it is an excellent youth caliber with lower recoil than the .308 due to the lighter bullets. However, the .308 can be loaded with 125 or 130 grain bullets to have the same net effect. The 7mm-08 might be a bit superior in the ballistic table, but not much different at the dinner table. I like it as an alternative to the .243 Win. Q:What is the advantage (if any) to a free floating rifle barrel?
from Joseph Schmit on 12.22.09
13 Answers
If not free floated, about 7 pounds of up force near the tip of the stock sometimes works very well. One way to tell if free floating your barrel will improve accuracy is to take some hard paper shims made from tabs of ammo boxes and place one or two plies just forward of the recoil lug and reinstall and tighten the stock to the action and check with a dollar bill for clearance from the end of the stock to the shims at the action end of the barrel. Then go shoot it with some of the same ammo you tested before the process. If it improves, you have a candidate for free floating. If not, you might look elsewhere for improvement. Both my wood stocked bolt rifles are action glass bedded and barrels free floated. The composite stocked ones are not. Another tip: Coat the inside of your stock, barrel channel, action mortise, and under the butt pad with polyurethane. It does not alter the appearance and prevents moisture intrusion and warping. Most stock warp comes from rain, ice, and snow creeping into the wood in the barrel channel and around the action. Not much intrusion through most exterior finishes unless you see white or frosted looking changes in the finish. On every production wood stock I have seen, those areas are unfinished. Not on mine anymore. Stained and poly'd. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

If it is a well worn pre-64 Winchester Model 70 or an older Model 54, it is probably worth more than you think. My advice is to perhaps buy a beater stock frm Ebay or a gun show and chop it down before you turn a collectable rifle into a $150 pawn shop special by spending $200 to ruin it.

I'm with Clay on the autoloader vs. bolt rifle for some of the same reasons. The military uses autoloaders almost exclusively, even for sniper rifles, so the accuracy issue is more the nut behind the receiver than anything else. Gas guns are less forgiving for pressure and burn rate of powder/primer combo. I handload a lot, so the autoloader for hunting is not for me. My AR is obviously an autoloader. I have a Remington 742 that belonged to my father in law that shoots extremely well with most factory ammo. In my opinion the bolt action is safer for beginners and allows quiet loading of a round into the chamber. Many guides will not allow the hunter to load their rifle until time to shoot. It is all about your experience and training. If you had to ask the question, I'd say that tells me that a bolt gun or single shot is better for you.

I will never be convinced that a lung shot deer will go more than 60-100 yards at most.

Just like the new car models. Just something new to market and sell. Can't defy the laws of physics and principles of interior ballistics and gain FPS without using more powder or increasing pressures. I think some of the short fat's are loaded to higher pressures than "conventional" cartridges of the same caliber. I only own one magnum rifle and it's cartridge has been around since 1947 or so, pre-dating even the 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum. As an old friend of mie who runs one of the best gun shops in America and has hunted all over the world say, "If you hit 'em, it will kill 'em" (When talking about standard cartridges and the "old" magnums)

My Lab pup was sort of the bull of the litter, particularly at feeding time. He was the only male available and was very birdy with a duck wing at 8 weeks. When I threw the duck wing a short distance, he pushed the other pup out of the way and pounced on the wing and brought it back to us. I said right then and there, "He'll do". He was the dominant pup and turned out to be a bit on the agressive side with other dogs. At 97 pounds, he is also the perfect vehicle security system. If I had it to do over, I might chose a pup that was not quite so dominant. He is the first pup we have had in years since most of our dogs have come from rescue situations and generally had excess baggage of bad habits learned elsewhere. I was told by an experienced gun dog trainer that a pup must do two things: Be very interested in a bird wing and come to you immediately.

Many rifles will first cross the line of sight (LOS) at aomewhere between 25-27 yards and again out about 200 yards (ZERO), depending on the cartridge and how high the sight/scope is above the bore. Even a slow 200 grain .358 Winchester will be -0.75 inches low at 7 yards for a 100 yard ZERO. Play around with a ballistics program and see the various forces effect on trajectory. There are lots of free ones online.

I caught part of it flipping back and forth between the Green Beret wannabe show and the Sniper show. Sniping takes nerves of steel. I doubt some of the yahoo's on here possess the skills to shoot deer at 400, 500, 600 yards as claimed. Note also that fixed power scopes are SOP. I know things were not easy back in the day, but those SF guys are tough to even make it to the candidate phase. Ranger training was hard enough. I'm not sure I could have made it through the current SF quals back even when I was 21. Looking back to 1971-72, we had some SF guys really struggle in Ranger training and Ranger School was deemed tougher physically than SF training. Apparently times have changed! OOOHHH RAHHH!

Some good advice above. However, you did not tell us if it a failure to extract, failure to feed, or what. Many problems with autoloaders are because of dirt and faulty magazines. There also may be a problem with the gas system due to worn parts, broken parts, or crud left behind by the gunsmith cleaning. If your gunsmith did not spot a problem with the rifle that is the cause of the malfunctions, then perhaps he did not do a very thorough job of cleaning it either. On that point, if you are unable to perform basic maintenance functions on your rifle yourself, you should consider a more simple firearm. That is not meant to be a slam. It is just common sense that you should be able to thoroughly clean any firearm that you own.

I agree with MLH. I used to do a heavy crimp, but now just a light crimp with Lee's factory crimp die. However, after pulling apart some uncrimped rounds that were a fuzz too hot with my kinetic/impact puller, I don't think they would have slipped! I don't light crimp until the load is worked up to final recipe for that cartridge. Then I light crimp a few at the range to ensure consistency and zero.

It is probably more effective than a .300 Win mag at extended ranges by giving you comparable energy at perhaps a hundred yards further out. Hardly worth the ammo cost, barrel life, recoil and blast. If you have never fired one with a full house load, you might consider another caliber or you can buy the Power Level I or II ammo from Remington comparable to a .30-06 and .300 WM respectively. Gee, I wonder why they did that? Go figure. I suppose if I won it in a raffle, I would try it or trade it.
I might put one on a plinking rifle if someone gave me one. Otherwise, it will be Nikon, Sightron, or Leupold. I would never trust my hunt to anything less. Anyone talking about a Simmons scope is likely out of the Kahles and Swarovski price range (like me).

Get online and check out Idaho F&G website and figure out which unit you will be hunting in. Some have over the counter tags which used to go on sale in December, I think. Most units have limited entry. Some are on a first come basis and some are by drawing only. I don't think there are any state-wide tags over the counter. Start your detailed research right now or contact an outfitter soon. Most of the better ones are booked by last year's hunters, but with the economy the way it is, they might have openings. If your friend has local contacts in idaho, that's where I would start in locating a reputable outfitter. Never too soon to plan a hunt!
2Poppa has some nice bargaining tips. #1 - know what the gun is really worth. Hit the web auctions for a good idea what they are selling for, not asking prices. #2 - decide what the gun is worth to you. It doesn't matter what it is worth to the dealer. #3 - take the max amount of cash you are willing to pay. If that is $400, then put $100 in one pocket and $300 in the other and when you are using 2Poppa's haggling tips, pull the $300 out and don't flaunt it. Just confirming in his mind that you are not bluffing to come back later, etc. If he balks, tell him that you know that the rifle is only worth $300 (or whatever) and that you are confident that you can find one elsewhere for the price you are willing to give. Don't expect that to work if it is an uncommon gun, however. He may be a better poker player than you are, so he may have already "read" you and won't budge. Good luck!

I would locate some data specifically for the GMX bullet since the pressures may be higher than conventional jacketed bullets. Or perhaps info from Hornady stating what data to use. Better stay well below max pressures for that lever gun or be ready for a trip to the gunsmith to replace the sear. Don't even ask why I know that.

Good quality gear is usually always the best value. For boots and socks and stuff that seems to wear out most often, try not wearing them year-round to work and stuff. I have a friend who was complaining about having to buy a new pair of Danner's because he ruined his $300 Canadians at work roofing a condo complex. Duh? I bought a pair of Irish Setter Gunflint boots on sale for $99 2 seasons ago and they are just fine. They are just as comfortable as the Danners they replaced after 10 seasons. Same goes with rifles. Buy a nice one that you want. I doubt you could wear out a big game rifle, varmint rifle maybe. Life's too short to hunt with cheap junk! (or hang out with ugly women)

From your choices in the original question, the .270 would be my choice, although none of those is among the many hunting rifles that I own. The .243 is a boy's rifle and the .300 Win Mag is way overkill for deer. You can get a lot of bloodshot meat from any of the three high velocity rounds, particularly the .300 Win Mag. My personal preference is the .257 Roberts, .308 Win, or .300 Savage for strictly deer, but that was not what you asked! Just me.

While I am a great fan of Remington 700 and Model Seven rifles, I am not a fan of the 710 and 770 series. Most are too heavy, clunky, cheaply made, and don't have a very good resale value. And there are few aftermarket acessories for the 770, like triggers, stocks, etc. If it were me, I'd step up to a Model 700 (even used) or look to a Weatherby Vanguard or Savage 110 series rifle if the small price difference between the 770 and 700 is a deal breaker. Either of the 7mm or .300 magnums will git 'er done with deer and elk. True, you can shoot heavier 200 and 220 grainers with the .300, but you can get the same penetration and power with 160 and 175 grain bullets with the 7mm due to higher sectional density and higher B.C. In both those cartridges, the short neck and overall length contraints causes the heavy for caliber bullets (like 200 gr.)to really suck up case powder capacity. Ballistically speaking, they are about six of one and a half dozen of the other. I guess it depends on whether you want to whack with .284 or .308 diameter projectiles! The 7mm will have a little less recoil due to reduced bullet weights, otherwise there is no bad choice. I lean more to the 7mm just because I hand load for two 7mm magnum cartridges and have more experience and exposure to them than the .300's. Good hunting!

.270 Winchester, .270 WSM, or .270 Weatherby Magnum is the conventional minimum although a few will disagree. Tally up the responses and decide for yourself. Also, check out Federal cartridge selector on their website or go to Chuck Hawk's website for more good advice. This is just the amateur corner for some. Personally, I would start out at 7mm magnum or .30-06 with a minimum 150 grain bullet. I don't want to get run off from my elk camp for crippling up a bunch of animals not recovered.

I own a Sightron S-II 3-9x42. It is an excellent scope and compares well to scopes costing way more. I bought it because it was bright, clear, and has a unique eractor tube (crosshair) adjustment system. Plus it has a 100% replacement warranty, not a fix it warranty. I was goig to use it as a sight in scope for ant rifles that came my way, but it is now parked on a 7mm Weatherby Magnum and has been on a couple of hunts in rain and snow with lots of rounds fired at the range. It has held zero just fine. I plan on buying another one, but I will not give up on my Leupold's either! Like Clay said, lots of bang for the bucks.

Nothing wrong with Remington brass for the most part. Winchester and Federal is ok, too. Try finding Winchester brass in .35 Whelen or 7mm Weatherby magnum. I believe Norma is the best brass anywhere. Nosler custom is pretty nice. Like the others said, stick to published load data. I'm sure you can find a .270 recipe that calls for Rem brass. I loaded some plinking rounds for my son's friend. Some of the Sellier & Bellot brass was so much thinner that you could tell which was going thru the die. Also, the same measure of powder left way more space in the case due to thin walls. I told Deke not to expect many reloads on that S&B stuff even in '06.

Never store your rifle in a gun case, soft or hard. Moisture cannot escape from it. It should be in a safe that includes a dessicant/dehumidifier but more importantly stored where air can circulate a little and transport moisture out of the gun. A Gunsock for each gun in the safe will let a dry rifle or shotgun breathe. Never put a shotgun that has been out in the rain waterfowl hunting back in your safe until thoroughly dry. You will have several rusty guns then. I leave my shotguns out by the woodstove for a day or two before migrating them to the locked room upstairs. The usually don't go in the safe until well after the season is over, but I have the luxury of no kids at home and a key locked spare bedroom. I just installed an exterior door knob with a lock. That way all the peekaboo's don't mess with my stuff!

Cool dry storage of ammo makes it's shelf life almost indefinite. Watch for corrosion and swelling from exfolliation on lead bullets that can cause feeding problems like on .22's. I fired a couple of Remington .38 S&W rounds last week that I know for a fact that are more than 29 years old because I bought them in 1979 or '80 before I went back in service! Shot just fine because they were stored properly. I also had some .38 SPL +P rounds "sputter fire" a while back. They were from about 1982, but had been stored loose in a kitchen drawer at the father-in-law's house since about 1986 or so. Had to drive one bullet out of the barrel with a cleaning rod. the rest of those went to the dump.

Coat hanger wire is pretty mild steel as compared to chrome moly barrel steel. It should have not inflicted serious damage, but get an aluminum 3-piece rod to leave in the truck or four wheeler just in case of any barrel obstructions. You really need to take a closer look at why you had a jammed cartridge. You have either an extremely dirty chamber, handloads seated out too far, a worn/broken extractor, or very crappy ammo. You should always carefully cycle all ammo for your hunting trip through the rifle to ensure proper function BEFORE you go afield....
....but not a particularly great adversary.

Ditto. If you can find a Smith & Wesson 1000 Super 12 Waterfowler (old model made by Howa) grab it. I have one that is way less complicated than a 11-87 and handles very well. Can be had on the Dot Com auctions for around $350. I'm going to buy a spare next time I see one. Some of these autoloaders have too many o-rings and such. Not the S&W.

The barrel should be out of focus at about 2x or higher. With my 1-4x Leupold on the AR, I can see the front sight at 1 to about 1.5x, but higher magnification eliminates it from the focal plane.

A brush gun is a light, shorter, balanced rifle (as compared to heavier, longer scoped bolt guns) that is easy to carry and nimble when it comes time to get on target, usually with open sights. You should never attempt to shoot through brush for the reasons stated above and more importantly, target identification and background is paramount for safety.

I have an S-II 3-9x42 on my Weatherby mag. It has done fine on 2 elk hunts in rain and snow and stood up to lots of shooting recoil. Very bright and crisp in dim light. To me, better in fading light than my Leupold VX-II's or the old Vari-X III that I have. But, I don't pretend that it is better than the higher end Leupold's and the new VX-3.

You had better shoot both on targets at the range to see if they will even shoot close to the same point of impact. Just because they are the same brand of ammo doesn't guarantee they will even shoot close to the same point of impact at any given range. Too many of you depend on paper zero's with the help of ballistics charts. Notice that no left/right figures are in a ballistics chart. If you use theoretical zero data for your rifle, you might be eating theoretical backstraps. Like Clay said, decide on a bullet weight and zero it in. Do it again anytime you change loads.

Barrel heating will cause more variation in your shot string than will fouling except in extreme instances. The more powder you are burning, the quicker the barrel heats up. Oil or solvent left in the bore will cause an erratic first shot (and sometimes higher pressures). That's why it is good to clean the bore after zeroing and fire one or two fouling shots followed by a clean dry patch or BoreSnake before hitting the field for the hunt.

They must not sell very well. Walmart has them marked way down and Cabela's has them in the Bargain Cave marked down too.
Both. My .358 Win., .257 Roberts, and recently acquired 7mm Weatherby have pricey ammo with limited selection(s). I just like to put together loads not commercially available. Like 150 grain TTSX for the 7mm WBY. Only 140 gr is available from Weatherby at about $69 a box. The custom loaders get almost $90 for those exotics! There is only one load available for the .358 Win at about $45 if you can find them.
If you convert one without the proper licensing paperwork, you should put your family and career plans on hold for an extended stay at the Crossbar Hotel.
