  • Montana Rifle Co. Model 1999: The Lefty Rifleman's Rifle

    100% of 9 votes

Winchester, as far as I know, has no plans for a southpaw Model 70. However, Montana Rifle Co. in Kalispell is making its own highly refined version of the Model 70, which it calls the Model 1999 (montanarifleco.com). You can get it in right- or left-hand, with a wood or synthetic stock, matte stainless or Teflon coated. I have one in .270, and it is truly a superior working rifle. Prices range from just under $2,100 to $4,500. —D.E.P.

  • Ruger No. 1S Medium Sporter in .45/70

    100% of 2 votes

This single-shot has a 22-inch barrel, but because the receiver is so short the overall length is about the same as the Marlin's. And since the front sling swivel is sited far forward on the barrel, the Ruger rides very low on your shoulder. (If you think I'm making too much of carrying qualities, spend a week among the peckerpole pines and then we'll talk again.) It gives you only one shot at a time, but you aren't going to need more than one shot if it's a good one. ($950; 603-865-2442; www.ruger.com)

This is a handy glass of modest size and price. It's an excellent value, available in a camo version if you simply must.

  • Benelli SuperNova

    100% of 6 votes
    THE LOWDOWN
Benelli's 3½-inch Nova has a unique polymer-encased receiver that handles serious abuse. I have personally dunked mine, thrown it in the mud, and bounced it off riprap to no ill effect. The new SuperNova is the same tough gun with improvements. For example, it has a ComforTech stock with gel inserts that soak up kick. You can also switch recoil pads without tools, making it easy to shorten the stock when you're all bundled up in cold weather. The safety button and trigger guard are larger to accommodate gloved fingers. And as with the original Nova, the magazine cap doubles as a pin punch so you have the tools at hand for field stripping.

  • TREAT MOUNTAIN CALLERS

    100% of 1 votes

In addition to box and slate calls, Shawn Williams of Treat Mountain Callers makes a number of lesser-known styles that sound just as good. His scratch boxes are a true bargain at only $15, but it's his tube calls that really stand out. Each is hand turned on a lathe one at a time and can be made to order from a wide range of exotic woods. $30-$40; 770-748-2619; www.treatmountaincallers.net

  • Marlin Model 1895G Guide Gun in .45/70

    50% of 4 votes

With a stubby 18 ½-inch barrel, this rifle is very short (only 37 inches overall) and light (7 pounds) as well. Combined with Garrett Cartridges' (www.garrettcartridges.com) fire-breathing custom loads, it will knock an elk sideways. This little rifle works great with iron sights but is so accurate that it begs to be used with a low-powered scope. ($646; 800-544-8892; www.marlinfirearms.com)

  • THE LEAD SLED

    85% of 7 votes

A writer friend, facing a mountain of slugs to test and a looming deadline, hired a college student, promising to teach the eager young lad the secrets of successful gun writing. "Your first job is to shoot all these slugs and bring me the targets," he said, then poured himself some more whiskey.
