I agree that it depends more on maturity than it does age. Also, I do not think that a father should push his kids to go hunting with him. The child should make a conscious decision that he wants to hunt. I think that at that point, the father is obligated to take the child hunting. It should be left to his judgement as to when the child should be allowed to carry a firearm and take game himself.
I think Mossy Oak matches up the best all-around. I hunt mostly pines, and I think it just blends better with those pines.

From where I see it, you have 3 options. #1) Let it walk: Here, you encounter the problem of everyone telling you that you're nuts and bigfoot doesn't exist. #2) Shoot it: Here, the environmentalists try to sue your pants off for shooting our "ancestor". #3) Let it walk and don't tell anybody: This option keeps you from all ridicule, but you drive yourself mad keeping it to yourself.

Also check out the Marlin bolt actions which sell for around $330 or so. Ruger came out last year with the M77 hawkeye. I have the hawkeye in .308 and love it. It sells for around $600 brand new. I'm on that narrow path, and to the Christians on this site, you better take heed of Matt. 7:15 as well: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves." You will definitely kill the deer with a good shot. In my mind, the problem would be tracking. It would seem to be such a fast, small bullet that it would just fragment violently and not leave an exit hole. The deer would die, but I think you would have a hard time finding it. I wouldn't do it. If I am wrong, someone tell me why.

I'm no expert, but my guess would be the materials used to make them. With shotgun ammo, the hull is mostly plastic and the shot is lead only. The casing on rifle ammo is all metal (brass) and the bullet is lead coated with copper (unless it's a new "green" bullet or Barnes).

I drove to pick him up, and he was already out of the stand and waiting when i got there. I asked how he did and he just started laughing histerically. He tells me the story of how he saw 11 deer that morning. One gave him a perfect broadside shot at 15 yards, so he drew back, but when he did, the doe kind of turned and faced him. He didn't know whether to shoot or let back down so he decided he was going to shoot through the front should and hope for the best (not smart). Anyways, the instant he releases the arrow a deer snorted and the target deer lifted her head right into a MUZZY!!! Yep, he shot the deer right between the eyes!!! Me and my sister were fishing on my little boat one day. I decided to make an extremely long cast with a buzzbait. I told her to watch out because of the direction I wanted to throw. Hooked her right in the forehead with a BUZZBAIT!!! It, was embedded just past the barb--well, a lot past the barb. I played medic for about the next 5 minutes and got it out using the method outlined in Field and stream a while back. She actually said it was rather painless, considering how deep the hook was in her head. I cringe every time I think about it. And no, she never slapped me. She was actually quite calm about the whole thing. Another time, a buddy of mine was fly fishing and caught my pants with the fly. I'm glad it didn't hook me in the process. If you're asking this because you did it to someone, you're not alone!!!

I was in walmart one time getting ready to buy .22 ammo. An "immigrant" (is that politically correct?) was also buying .22 ammo. Then, the immigrant asked for .243 magnum. The guy behind the counter actually looked for several minutes for .243 magnum rifle ammo. Finally, he looked at the guy and said, "we have .243, but not magnum." the immigrant said "no, need magnum" in that fantastic "immigrant" accent. I was crackin up. This went on for some time, and the customer finally got fed up that walmart did not sell .243 magnum and left.

Reid, if my memory is correct, the 870 has been around since the 60's, and over 10,000,000 of them have been made. You take a shotgun that's been around and been popular on top of that for 50 years, it's going to be on the list. You just cant beat the 870 for function, reliability, and price. All the pumps you listed are more expensive than the 870. Also, rrmont makes a good point. Most everyone either has one or knows someone else who does. Always going bang helps it too.

It's kind of difficult to explain on this blog (for me, anyway), but I'll give it a go. You basically have 2 things to worry about. The little knob behind the handle controls the spool drag on the cast. To set it for whatever bait you are fishing, adjust it to the point where as you disengage the spool from the gears, the spool should stop spinning as it hits the ground or water. The next thing is to make sure to feather the spool with your thumb throughout the cast. It really just takes some practice to get the hang of it. When first starting out, I recommend that you set the drag rather tight, then loosen it as you become better. My best advice would be to find someone who is already good at and have them teach you.

from patrickj2544 on 04.20.09

That is quite the situation. I've fished in this situation a lot and often found myself very frustrated. The best thing I have found to do is Texas-rig a small-medium sized curly-tailed worm. Throw it PAST the bed and reel it over the weeds and let it drop down right in the middle of the bed. Then, just let it sit there. You may have to wait a while, but eventually that mama bass will get annoyed enough to pick it up.

I think you need to give more info on what type of problem you are having. Are you using spinning reels and the line is getting twisted or a baitcaster? By saying they all have terrible memory, I assume you're talking about a spinning reel that is getting some serious line twist. If so, it may be the way you are putting the line on the reel, and not the line itself. As for brands, I've had bad luck with trilene, but very good luck with Stren, Spiderline mono, and Suffix.

But, if you're just deer huntin, and the goal is DEAD, either will certainly do the trick. If you're are going to hunt bigger game like elk, go with the 30-06.

Golfing Sportsman, it's called bio-magnification, and that is a very rare phenomenon. You're on the right track to how it happens. In lakes around here, and with the better regulations we now have, bio-magnification is probably not going to be seen. What will happen is bio-accumulation. That is the term for fish and other organisms accumulating pollutants in their bodies. As for answering the question, most state wildlife agencies will be able to help you with how much fish you can eat from your lake. You probably can eat it with no problem, just not every day. Golfing Sportsman: Didn't mean to sound like a smart-butt or nothin. You're on the right track.

Lake Jordan is not that far from Cary. If you're just going for catfish in general and are fishing from the shore, go get you some dipbait and a few of the treble hooks designed to hold the dipbait. You can use a medium to heavy action spinning reel with at least 12 lb. test line. Tie it like a carolina rig, with a 3/4 oz. sinker above a 24-30 in. leader. Fling it out there and keep your finger on the line to detect a bite. When you feel that initial thump, set the hook. As far as size, don't expect anything monstrous fishing like this, but you never know!!!

Deer steaks from any part of it. Rump, shoulders (kinda little, but still good), and especially tenderloin. Just get some teriyaki marinade and and soak those babies over night. Then, grill the steaks till they are medium-rare to medium (my opinion). Serve 'em up with some taters and you are set!!!

This sounds like something my cousin would have told me when I was 4 and believed everything I heard. Seriously though, the barrel doesn't care how far away something is when you shoot at it.

Most people on the stream I fish use panther martins or rooster tails, and I am one of them. After every fish has seen that though, I like to switch to a little rapala or other small jerkbait. This usually coaxes a few more bites, and if that doesn't work, I usually try a little ball of powerbait in the deeper pools.

I learned to bass fish with a medium spinning combo that was quite cheap, but it worked. I fished with plastic worms and caught a ton of bass in just about every pond. Even today, a texas-rigged worm is my favorite bass lure. At first, all you need to do is simply lift it of the bottom and let it fall. Bass will usually hit it on the way down. Then, wait a second or two and set the hook hard. If you learn to catch bass this way, you can catch em just about any other way you want because this method teaches you to "feel" the bite. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Just something else to break.
massive wound channel, flies extremely well in high-speed bows. But, they are expensive, and if you have a quiver on your bow with foam in it, it is very difficult to keep them closed. I got rid of mine because of that very reason.

we planted some clover in an area that received only moderate sunlight. It came up great, but the deer were'nt crazy about it. They would come out in it and just mosey around, never really eating it. It did come up well though.
