  • Don't Miss F&S Feb. 2010 Issue

F&S, Are you guys out of your mind? The only way you could have done worse than sending Heavy out there is if you had sent Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid. Seriously, Heavy should never cover a story that requires transportation other than what is commercially available (and not rentable), he makes me laugh and I am not prepared to loose his column just yet. • Hunting...Too Commercialized?

As I see it, the problem is that people think they can compensate for poor hunting, fishing, or outdoor's skills with more gear and more expensive gear. I can see if a guy gets to a point where his skills have taken him about as far as they can and the only way to get better is with better gear. Case in point are all the expensive high powered (by that I mean all the magnum cartridges, etc.) rifles with all the big scopes on them hunters use to compensate for not going to the range and getting good at shooting, understanding ballistics, etc. Granted, you will never kill elk with a .30-30 at 400 yards and once a person’s skill gets to the point where they are beyond the ability of their rifle then go and buy a .300 Win Mag with a quality scope. But don’t buy a .300 Win Mag with a quality scope to make up for the fact you can’t hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yards with iron sites.

  • Wall tents

Sorry, one more thing, if you are interested in a military tent, you can try the following links: http://gsaauctions.gov/ http://web.govliquidation.com/ Remember if you buy one to make sure you get the poles with it.
  • Wall tents

We used a GP Small this past year, 12'x12' in elk camp. Bottom line it was great but a couple considerations: 1. Ours was a military tent and was not light and required 3 or 4 guys to set it up. I guess we could have done it with 2 people but that would have been a bear. 2. If you are hunting in the mountains you need a stove. We had one and it worked great and really kept the tent warm. 3. Make sure you have some larger tools than just a hammer for pounding in stakes. We had a good freeze and needed a pick ax or pry bar to get the stakes out.
  • I'm getting sick of this

I am noticing this morning as I surf around the site that things are loading quicker. Not sure if this is just because it is still early in the morning or not but noticeably better right now (08:31 MDT) than yesterday.
  • Natures Toilet

Deuteronomy 23:12-13 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. Even God says to dig a hole and bury it.
  • Coincidence? Maybe Not

All, I received this link (http://www.shootingwire.com) from a friend this afternoon, looks like the change to the military selling used brass may actually be accurate (beyond the other governmental actions which are also listed). Here's the confirmation: http://www.georgia-arms.com/. Thoughts? This scares me.
  • Ammo Shortage?

Re-loading supplies are also out of stock. A friend over the weekend could not find anything except some bulk ammo for his .45. No primers, nothing for .223, etc. It's all about the new administration.
  • New gun catalog, lack of imagination, and fear.

I have been cruising gunbroker.com looking at the semi-autos and on a lot of the descriptions they have some sort of statement like "get it now before they get outlawed" or some derivative thereof. Does nothing but drive up the prices I think.
