To catch or eat? To catch for freshwater it is Smallmouth bass. To catch and eat for saltwater its a toss up between stripers and tuna.

Depends on what state I am in at that point. Texas i shoot. MA...I put the gun down because it will somehow be a felony to even have it pointed at someone even though I legally own it. Seriously, the instructor of the firearms course I took there told everyone in the class we would be better off to have mace instead of a firearm. This is due to the states overly intense gun laws.

Yea you should be able to catch stripers and blues from the shore. Thats not a guarantee though. If you want to be guaranteed fish then go on a charter. August is the best time of year for bluefin tuna and most charter guys will do trips for them too. Here is a link to the guys at First Light Anglers. They are about an hour north of Wellfleet, but they will be able to hook you up with a charter/guide in the area you will be in. Their number is at the top of the website.....check out some of their photos to see what you can expect in terms of fish. www.firstlightanglers.com

You have to do two things. 1. Take a MA State Police approved gun safety course (around $100) 2. Set up a meeting with your towns licensing officer at the police station to apply for the FID LTC class A or B (another $100) You basically are submitting to a background check, get fingerprinted and entered into the criminal database. I just got my class A LTC. It was easy besides for the cost. Also some towns are much harder and more discriminative in terms of who they will give a license to. Hope this helps

I have done both extensively. I like to aim for a mix of each. For example I went saltwater fishing probably around 15-20 times last summer, and i went freshwater just about every day i didnt go saltwater. Saltwater is more of an experience typically....we usually run 15 or more miles offshore and stay out for at least 8 hours. Those days kick your a$$ if its sunny. Freshwater is more relaxing for me.

As dwaynez was getting at....make sure there is a minimal amount of space for light to get in around the lenses. This usually means going with a pair of glasses that have heavier/larger frames. It makes a huge difference if there is a lot of light coming in vs. no light around the lenses. I have a pair of Maui Jim sun glasses, which have great polarization, but the frames let too much light in for them to be effective enough for me, so I usually end up wearing an older pair of shades or cheapo ones that block out peripheral light better.

The first really big striper i caught when I was. This fish was a resident under the fuel dock at my dads marina, and a bunch of people had seen it once or twice. It was so big they named it Diesel, partly for its size and partly because of where it lived. I was fishing off a nearby dock for stripers. The fish was hanging around for a while and i had a small spinning rod. As soon as the guys from the tackle shop saw it they got me a heavy boat rod so i could muscle the fish out from under the docks if i hooked it. I put on a whole dead herring and the fish took one look and inhaled it right in front of us. After about a ten minute fight and line chafing on the chains that hold the dock in place i hauled it up on to the dock. It was 43 inches. I have a picture of me and the fish laying on the dock and im not much taller than the fish is long.
