I’m always envious of Western hunters, primarily because—in most cases—they get to start earlier than the rest of us! I adore mulie and elk hunts for a number of reasons, but near the top of the list is that I only have to wait ‘til late August or early September to venture to that gorgeous country.
Every fisherman needs a few earthworms once in a while. I was using a small backhoe (pictured) to clean out some drainage ditches the other day. A bunch of garden worms that I saved in an old coffee can were a happy by-product.

To shoot clay targets well, you have to think only of the next bird.
A short attention span is my weak spot as a shooter, as it is for a lot of people. I’ll be doing fine, running a round of skeet or trap, or a smoking a station at sporting clays, when some little, nagging thought pops into my mind, just long enough to wreck my straight or leave me with yet another 9x10 at a station I could have run easily. If you try to suppress those nagging thoughts, they come back at the worst possible time, just as you pull the trigger.
My local archery shop owner has a favorite saying: “There ain’t many of us as good as the bows we shoot.” There is a lot of truth in that saying, but it only truly comes home when you witness a truly great shot pick up a bow—preferably the same one you’re using—and really show his stuff.
I enjoy a good deer hunting joke, and a fellow whitetail geek sent this to me recently. I thought a weekend post would be a good chance to share some humor, and I encourage you to reciprocate with a good deer joke of your own!
Anyway, a 10-point buck, an 8-point buck, and a nubbin were all hanging out on a field-edge one fall evening, nibbling grass and plucking acorns off a tree.
Mock scraping is nothing new to serious deer hunters, and most of us recognize that the overhanging branch is critical to making a mock that rocks. Indeed, it’s a fairly common practice to wire, tape or nail a branch to a tree of our choosing, rather than limit our scrape construction to a tree that already sports a branch that grows at the right height.
Don Elder of Gresham didn't expect to catch anything Sunday afternoon when he waded through the crowd at Oxbow Regional Park and into the Sandy River to practice his fly-casting technique.
But three people he pulled to the shoreline with a bright chartreuse and orange, salmon-strength class fly line are thankful he's getting better.
