Q:What do you think of our great president's idea of opening up the U.S. border?

I am all for feeders and high fences. I have hunted with and without. The vast areas of land under high fence in west and south Texas are not unlike your National Forests. The snobs who turn their noses up at the fence by saying " Its not fair" will be the first to grab a high powered rifle and "sneak" within 300 yards to shoot a buck and say that it was "fair-chase". Those high fences add greatly to the health of a deer heard by stopping EHD and CWD at the gate. They also reduce highway accidents saving untold millions in insurance premiums. To the rest of you "purists" who prefer the loin cloth and knife; you have a much better chance of killing a mature buck on a food plot than you ever will under a feeder. The feeder supports the health of young deer and does. Trophy bucks will generally never come anywhere close to the feeder. Food plots and grain fields are way less sporting than a feeder but since we are about fair; we need to outlaw deer drives because you are not outsmarting the deer you are just herding him like a cow. Hunting on private lands where grain is grown should also be outlawed because thats really just a big feeder. unbelievable.
While I agree with everything that has been said, I am surprised no one has mentioned Michigan for big deer. For sheer numbers of deer I would go with Texas, Mississippi,or Alabama. Those states cannot rival the size of the midwest deer but, they post respectable numbers of B&C bucks every year.

I will disagree. Partially anyway, It depends on your conditions. I have killed many deer with the 22-250 at various ranges up to 400 yards. Every time my bullet passed through and dropped the deer within 10-20 foot of where they were standing. The person firing the rifle is exponentially more important than the round. My first deer was about 100 yards, double lung, drop in your tracks with a 22-250. What that does not show is that my father would not let me carry a rifle until I could put 10 rounds in a three inch circle at 200 yards. He made sure that I was accurate and confident with the rifle. It was not a stunt and neither were any of the others I have killed since that day. Just FYI, every deer that I have ever lost have been with a .30 or larger, except one that I made a poor decision on with a .270.

I studied the .257, 25-06, and .264 win mag. extensively when I was looking for my deer rifle. In my opinion at the time, the .264 won out over the other two. That was over 20 years ago. If I were shopping today most likely I would go with the 25-06. I have very little field experience with the .257 but, from what little experience I do have, it would make an excellent deer cartridge. My decision to buy the 25-06 would hinge on price, selection, and availability of ammo, and nothing more.
Funny that you ask. I started shooting with fingers this year and am going back to the release because I lost all feeling in my fingertips. I have not shot my bow in over a month and am just now starting to get the feeling back.
I release more because I like fresh fish and do not stockpile very much.

I have several but I will only share a couple; I wedged myself under my house several years ago to fix a plumbing problem. I noticed about 20 feet in that I could not turn over or turn around but decided to continue to the problem and then back out. Whilst inching forward I became vaguely aware of something in front of me. upon shining my flashlight I was face to face with a western diamond back of about 4' in length, the snake was coiled and very aggitated, but not rattling. I froze for what felt like 3 hours ( probably about 30 seconds) after awhile the snake relaxed and went out away from me. I inched back out, changed pants and called a plumber. My most recent issue happened about two days ago. I was in my hunting/fishing closet looking for a certain tackle box. I began taking everything out for a little rearranging, about 3/4 of the way in I found a 6' snake skin amongst my gear. The skin was fairly fresh because it was still pliable. I have not found this snake and hope that it left the way it came in. Most likely my wife or one of my daughters will find it for me, and we will be moving. I have a few more but those really stick out.

I have killed many, With everything from a shotgun slug to a pocket knife. The pocket knife gator was a six footer that I caught by hand while frogging. I was in the water pushing the boat in chest deep water and he would not leave me alone so I grabbed him by the head and turned him upside down in the water. Originally I just cut his throat and tossed him into the boat with my wife. He was not dead and it turned into a rodeo real fast, so I had to climb into the boat, subdued the gator and decapitated it. That is the last time I go frogging without some type of firearm. When shooting a gator the steeper the angle the better. It is best if you can shoot straight down, between and slightly behind the eyes. As for the taste; it is more fishy than chickeny in my opinion. The size of the gator has alot to do with texture and flavor, similar to other animals the older, bigger gators (over 10') seem to be tough and gamey.

I am not sure of the ballistic tip specifically but I believe the first expanding bullets were the "dum dum" rounds used by the British in the 1800's. Either way I like Noslers bullet much better.

If you are sighting in, make sure you establish a solid group before moving your sights. I have seen too many people move scopes from one extreme to the other by trying to "chase" each round. Make sure you have a comfortable aim point. I generally line up where I want to hit, then I close my eyes and take two breaths, when you reopen your eyes that is your natural aim point. You may need to shift position a few times to get it right when you reopen your eyes. Take your time and let the barrel cool after every round. Thats my $.02

pumakitchen hit on a good point, as did everyone else. I feel it is a combination of range size, and restrictive limits and seasons on mulies. The length of season and draw type tag systems also restrict opportunity.

I kill coyotes because they have depleted the rabbit population to the point I never see any rabbits in this area. Rabbits were once abundant here and coyotes were few. Now they have swapped places. I have yet to see the coyotes killing my calves but now that the population is so great it is only a matter of time before they start to deplete their other food sources and begin on farm animals. I kill and mostly (but not always)eat feral hogs because they destroy my hay fields and well as rice fields. I have trapped and sold thousands and the population never seems to decrease. So to answer your question it will mostly fall to local residents and land owners to decide when an animal has overpopulated.

I have never had a gun explode. I have had to remove spent cases with needle-nose pliers. I also had some "hot loads" from a once trusted friend, that blew the primer out of the case (the primer ended up getting into my bolt and blocking the firing pin). While in the Corps, I was doing a live fire manuever and had shot about 300 rounds through my m-16. When I fired my last round I noticed it did not sound right. Upon cleaning the rifle I was unable to get a cleaning rod down the barrel. After much effort I got the rod through. The last round had become hung in my barrel about halfway down and plugged it. I remain convinced if I had fired another round it would have exploded.
I have gone almost daily for the last couple of weeks. I have caught some speckled trout, redfish, flounder, crappie, bass, and catfish. It is a beautiful day so I may go again in a little while.

The simple answer is no. It is a lot like cars in that I do not need a 4-wheel drive to run to the store for milk but if we have a flood it sure will come in handy. I think it is human nature to seek bigger, faster, and stronger. Many people such as myself experiment with different loads to maximize the performance of a weapon. I do it to challenge myself to find a load that my rifle shoots better than any that I had tried before. Many times I discover that I need to shoot a lesser load to maximize the accuracy and performance of my rifle.

My first night in a combat zone, we were getting shelled sporadically. Having been told to expect this I had dug the fighting hole to end all fighting holes. At least 10' deep we had to build a step just to see out. we covered the top with a thin sheet of plywood, sandbags and vegetation. I took the first two hour watch while my holemate slept. After my two hours I awoke him and we swapped. Exhausted I drifted off cringing to the sounds of explosions. My partner, exhausted as well, drifted off while on watch. Sometime in the middle of the night our platoon Sgt was making his rounds checking our defenses. Our hole was hidden extremely well and he walked onto the top of the plywood, which did not hold. So he, plywood, sandbags, and vegetation came crashing down in the middle of my chest. I thought it was a direct hit, I am sure I was screaming like a girl, because he was as well. That was my first experience with combat.

I am not sure about Minnesota, but in Texas several Universities offer degrees in wildlife management including several who have courses in law enforcement for game wardens. While in high school I would take courses heavy in biology and chemistry. I am sure that Minnesota is alot like Texas in that interest and competition for those jobs are intense. Your grades are of utmost importance in moving you up the list. My advice would be bury yourself in the books and keep the grades way, way, up and continue your education above the bachelors degree into the masters and doctorate level.

I am assuming since you said bass opener you are up north as most southern states do not have a bass season. If this is the case I would go off of the water temperature, if it is warm enough for spawn I would go with soft plastics in shallow water sight casting beds. If not spawning temp yet I would work your x-rap in deep cover and in staging areas off of the main lake points. Hope that helps because that is as specific as I could be with a general question.

I have never seen anywhere that "deer" calibers were written, required, commanded. I shoot the rifle I feel like shooting. When I hunt whitetails I see no reason togo big. I am comfortable with anything above a 22-250. It has nothing to do with fla trajectory or felt recoil. It mostly just happens to be the gun I felt like shooting that day. They are just as effective and deadly as the cannons some people prefer. So until I see some visible evidence that it is improper or unethical I will continue to shoot "varmit" calibers.

Some people will never see it another way. To them bigger will always be better and there is nothing wrong with that as long as they can shoot it accurately. I hunted a ranch in far west Texas that the rancher made everyone fire a 4" group at 250yds before he would let you hunt on his place. I know that would be a chore for most 30-30's. Keep in mind that this was wide open flat country and not the midwest or northeast so the hunting was vastly different. If I were hunting the Maine woods or Michigans U.P. I may elect to take the 30-30 for its ability as a brush gun. In the open I am going for a light fast bullet, in the brush I will take the big slow bullet.

Clay I did not see your question yesterday either, but to answer your question. You have to master the fundamentals of the shot. As a USMC range coach we started with the position and shared the theory of bone structure supports and muscle relaxation. From there we focused on sight picture and natural point of aim, This included a solid week of "snapping in" or dry firing at a barrel with little targets painted on it, from the four main shooting positions. Throughout we worked with our shooters on breathing and trigger squeeze.

In my opinion it sounds like your shooting position or platform is off and you are "chasing the bull". I could be wrong but most shooting problems have specific symptoms and being all over the paper is usually from trying to muscle the aim point. If you are sure that you have eliminated the mechanical issues (including the scope)as the cause of your problem, I would work on position and natural point of aim.

I shot a buddies new Stoeger 2000 yesterday, it is built with the Benelli action in a Stoeger gun. It is inertia driven and did extremely well with high brass dove loads. We only had one jam and that was with a low brass #8 after about 500 rounds. If we had bothered to clean it or oil it before the jam it may not have happened. It is well worth the less than $400 price tag. If money is not that much of a concern Beretta, Remington, and Bennelli are the way to go.

I am not very familiar with pop-up blinds. Can you use the glue-on strip type magnets? I know that when you leave the blind you would want to zip it up but you could use them while you are hunting in it. You are on your own with the snow slide. We do not get much experience with that in south Texas.

I took a series of shots when I was 11 years old and I have never gotten it again. I had a severe reaction to it everytime I got it. It would spread quickly to my face and eyes so the doctor gave me the shots 25+ years ago and no more poison ivy. I have heard Benadryl works well, as well as calamine.
Depends on the situation. Its hard to beat spinnerbaits and soft plastics, but if the timing is right I love catching bass on topwater at sunrise.

The thing I have noticed is that all of the fish will be about the same size, and their heads will be larger than normal. Keep the first 5 fish you catch, weigh and measure each one if they are very similar chances are you are over stocked.

That is a funny story Del. I had a guy from work invite me to his quail lease, turns out he was hunting my property. After some intense questioning he admitted that he wasnt leasing the land from anyone but since no one lived there he figured no one cared. I also took my boss duck hunting one time. Total mistake. I had set up the decoys the night before, He showed up drunk, I refused to hunt with him and started picking up my decoys. While I am in the water he gets out his shotgun and starts tossing beer bottles in the air and shooting them over my head, raining glass down on me. In return for my resignation he agreed not to press assault charges.

$60 an hour is pretty steep. I think they should opt for the bounty system. It is way more effective and it would save taxpayer money.

Whitetail would be the best. Hogs would be the easiest. The exotics fall somewhere between the two.

I hunted them in Texas during those days. Snow geese are always super-wary that late in the season. A mature snow goose is one of the toughest animals to kill and by that time only the mature are left.
cottonmouth, they still give me the heebie-jeebies.
Speckled trout, redfish, a few flounder and lots of crappie. Will try white bass later this month.

Whitetail, muley, axis, fallow, sika, and I am not sure if you count these but pronghorn, blackbuck, and elk. I would love to hunt the blacktails. I have a friend from the Corps that lives up in Oregon and we are trying to get something together. I also want to make a trip for coues and desert muley.

The whites in Texas will start moving up the creeks to spawn at the end of this month and beginning of March. I use my crappie rig with 6-pound line and a beetle spin. The trick is the color take several and when you catch the first one, that is the color stick with it.
I guess I have not heard of this plan. I did read that we were going to kill the vegetation along the Rio Grande to eliminate cover for those crossing illegally. Opening up the border? Hard to get anymore open than we already are.
