If you decide to roast your turkey place a double layer of cheese cloth over the bird and baste with real butter. After the bird is done peel off the cloth and you will have a golden brown bird with lots of crisp delicious brown skin. You can get the cloth at a fabrick store.

I have sat as high as 27 ft with no problem. Most of the time around 20 to 24 is where I'm at. Keep movement very slow when a deer is on alert. Move when the head is behind a tree, etc. Try to sit in a large tree near the first limbs to break up your outline. Several times this fall I have had bucks straight downwind and not been detected. Still looking for something bigger.

Most fixed blade broadheads are not very accurate because they tend to plane regardless of brand. The larger and wider the blades the worse the planing becomes. Likewise the longer the shot the more it becomes evident. That is why you have to keep shots short (20-25 yd) when using them. Mechanicals tend to shoot better but many do not do the job as well as a fixed blade. Most folks know I love the Rage 2 blade mechanical. They have never failed me. Last month on an angling shot my arrow went completely thru a large doe cutting a huge path. She only ran 40 yd. Click my name and check the photo. Some mechanicals do not work well oon angle shots. That was not a problem for me using the Rage.

Mine is one of the first ones made. It takes No 11 percussion caps. When I tried to upgrade to musket caps the firing pin spring did not have enough energy to pop them. So I use No 11's and the gun missfired on a big 10 pt buck for me Tuesday morning. Not sure how to fix your problem but I would contact Remington or take it to a gunsmith. They are pretty accurate with sabot bullets but you need to wipe the bore with a wet patch between every shot for best accuracy. I just use spit.

You would be better served with a bow that is forgiving, accurate and quiet. Fast bows are usually less accurate and more noisey. Give single cam bows a hard look. I have taken 9 deer now in the last 3 seasons (counting the current one) with my Mathews Switchback XT. It shoots 400 grain hunting arrows a very quiet, accurate 262 feet per second. A deer can jump out of the way of even the fastest arrow there is if it hears the shot.

A trophy buck would not mean much to me if it was: 1. Shot by someone else. 2. Shot over bait. 3.Shot inside a high fence. 4. Hit by a vehicle. On the other hand when hunting for meat. Anything legal such as baiting is fine with me. After all in that case the idea is to get meat not a trophy. Today I photographed Steve Binkley's huge 242 inch buck. He is AWESOME and said to be worth many $K. Not worth much to me 'cause I didn't shoot him.
Today I saw Steve Binkley's 242 inch Iowa non-typical. That deer is a HOG! My hunting buddy is the Taxidermist on that one. He was shot just North of MO. All the guys above make good points. Not everyone is the shot Clay is. I always use whatever is available. If I have sticks I use them. If possible shoot from prone, sitting,or kneeling position in that order. Last position you should use is unsupported offhand and it's probably used more than any other by people that don't know better. I have made some really long shots shooting offhand but do not recommend them. BTW back in 1970 at Ft Jackson I was on the firing line prac..err..training with an M16. There was IMS 100 firing points and the range tower NCO screwed up. He raised the 300 meter targets while he had us in the offhand position. Only me and 1 other trainee knocked down our target. By all means give Mathews and Mission a look before you choose. I have shot just about everything in the 45 years since getting my first bow and I love Mathews. Keep in mind more important than speed is a bow that is quiet. A loud string twang will cause deer to jump at the shot and you will miss everytime.

Being in the woods is the cake. Successful hunting is the icing.
Statistically hunting is safer than fishing, bike riding, horseback riding, playing just about any game like football or soccer, and many other things that seem much more mundane than hunting. As noted above the greatest danger is probably falling (especially from stands).
Alaskan Lake Trout is the tastiest Salmonid IMO. Chinook or King Salmon will give you one heck of a fight but I will go with Silver Salmon on lite tackle 'cause they jump more. In fresh water love to catch a big Fla Largemouth and eat Walleye, Crappie (Speckled Perch in Central Fla) and Channel cats all fileted and in that order. Mix 1 cup each of Murphys oil soap, denatured alcohol and hydrogen peroxide and shake. Store in the peroxide bottle. To clean away the crud dip a patch in this and run it down your bore, follow with dry patches then oil. Rarely does it take 2 patches to loosen BP crud. Treat your bore with Ultraborecoat and it will be even easier to clean. I use UBC on all my guns, arrows and broadheads. UBC leaves a hard invisible shield that prevents rust and leaves metal feeling dry and smooth. Arrows absolutely will not chatter after coating and are much easier to remove from targets.

Having grown up in Florida I have shot many deer with buckshot. You need to try different choke tubes with different loads to get the best pattern from your gun. IME full choke does not always shoot the best pattern with buckshot. Patternmaster makes a tube that does very well with large shot. If the gun will consistently put 4 or 5 pellets in a pie plate that is your max range whatever it may be. I have seen Florida deer (which are small) killed stone dead by a single pellet thru the ribcage but that is a stunt you should not try. After all is said and done slugs give you more range and a better blood trail.
Clay is right you should pattern the gun with different sizes shot and shoot the one that patterns best. My first 8 or 10 deer was shot with No 1 or single 0 buckshot in Florida and Georgia. My Dad always considered no 4 buckshot too small for deer.

Been Bowhunting since 1964. Have used many broadheads including Bear razorhead, Thunderhead,Rocky Mountain Razor and more. Two yrs ago switched to Rage 2 blade. Since then have shot 6 arrows at deer and bagged 5 deer. Click on my username then click on view all photos. There is a photo of 2 bucks and a doe shot with the Rage (page 3 or 4 of the pics). You can clearly see the wound it made on the doe. Bloodtrails are easy to follow and no deer went more that 60 yds. On the down side you get 3 B-heads and 1 practice in a pack for 40 bucks. The blades will sometimes unlock in the quiver and also if they touch a twig while walking with an arrow nocked. Also the one deer that got away was a mature buck. The arrow ticked a twig and hit him in the shoulder blade without penetrating. It broke off at the insert and he got away. He no doubt healed 'cause I have seen 2 healthy deer shot by gun hunters with old broadheads inbedded in their shoulder blade. They are very accurate and effective. I highly reccommend them.

Try this, click on my username then go to page 6 or 7 of my photo file. You should see 2 ten point bucks and a doe shot with Rage 2 blade mechanical broadheads. Note the size of the wounds. In the last 40 years or so I've used many but my best record for any B-head is 6 dead deer for 7 arrows shot since switching to Rage 2 blade (not 3). They are very accurate and deadly. On the downside they are relatively expensive and sometimes the blades unlock in the quiver but never had a problem when I shot one. All but two of those deer never made it out of sight. Bloodtrails are huge.

I have shot several deer with the 2 blade Rage and had complete pass thru shots on all but 2 with a 62 lb Mathews bow. All but one died within 60 yds of the shot. One was hit in the shoulder blade, the arrow stuck and he ran off. The arrow was about 20 yds from the shot and broke off right at the insert. There was little blood and it was of the muscle wound color. My guess is that is what happened to you. I have seen and heard of 2 deer shot by gun hunters with broadheads stuck in the shoulder blade. The wounds had healed around the heads. one guy actually cut his finger on a Bhead stuck in a doe's shoulder before he saw it. No way a rib stops that arrow unless your arrows are extremely light.

Semi-autos are somewhat more unsafe and usually but not always less accurate than bolt guns. Boltguns tend to have better triggers. Resale on a bolt gun is better also. There are good reasons why boltguns are by far the most populer. If someone gave me a semi-auto I would not hunt with it unless there was no choice.

Three years ago I put a Wasp jackhammer broadhead thru a small doe. The arrow was covered with blood but the deer ran into a cedar and brier thicket. There was not a drop of blood on the ground. hunted that deer for hours with nary a sign. That prompted my switch to Rage. Now the blood trails are copious and short.

A bears brain is small compared to the size of his head and located in the center of the head between and behind the eyes. Huge jaw muscles on each side give the head it's large rather rounded look. That said, the brain is the only thing to aim for if you hope to stop one with a .22 as the spine is even smaller and more difficult to hit. A hit anyplace else will just piss him off. BTW when you put the skull in a large pot and boil it a few hours those jaw muscles will fall off in 2 large sinewy chunks.

Regardless of what head you use make sure it is razor sharp and you will usually kill the deer if you hit it right. Rage just gives you a little more margin for error. I have seen 2 does that were hit too far back with a Rage. In both cases the liver was sliced open as well as the paunch and neither deer made it very far. Another thing, all 7 deer I have seen shot with a Rage 2 blade had entrance wounds with the blades cutting parallel to the ground. Not one was cut vertically.

If calling does not work write them a nice polite handwritten letter. Explain who, what, where, when and why. Give them your phone number and ask them to call you at their leisure. Include a self addressed stamped envelope if you want a written reply. That would give you written permission if the game warden asks.

An old First Sergeant's wife gave him a Mark 5 in 257 for his birthday. I took hime out and put him in one of my tree stands on Ft Benning GA. Before I got to my stand I heard him shoot so when back to check. He had shot a small buck at about 30 yards. The hole that 257 WBY blew in that deer was like nothing I've ever seen before. Most of his insides turned to mush or gone. Yes it's somewhat faster than the 25-06 and would be very flat shooting for bean fields. You pay a big premium for ammo too. I have a 25-06 and love it. It will do everything you need to do albeit at slightly less velocity. Did you know that a major reason for the high cost of WBY ammo is each case has to be pressure formed to get that reverse curve on the shoulder.

Deer do not move much in falling rain. Right after the rain stops is a good time to be in the woods as they usually start feeding then. Some days I see nothing and on others well, saw 4 bucks and 3 does one day last month during the ML season.Last night I went out for a couple hours saw 2 fawns in neighbors driveway but nothing in the woods. It is what it is and that is why its called hunting instead of shooting. Have fun hunting regardless. The unsuccessful days make the successful days sweeter.

Many years ago I found a large buck with his antlers cut off on Ft. Benning GA. I had hunted this deer for 2 years. Really was disgusted until a week later ran into the hunter that admitted shooting the buck. The man shot the buck just before the end of shooting hours and he ran over 150 yds into very dense brush before falling. He could not find the deer until the next morning and by that time he was bloated and already stinking when the hunter cut into him for gutting. So the guy cut off the BIG antlers and left the rest for the critters to eat. That said about 5 years ago while hunting near Olsberg KS I spotted a large buck laying in a bare field near a gravel road with nothing but antlers cut off. He had been shot. If you go to my profile (click my username) and look at photos there is a pic of a Kansas game warden holding a set of B&C whitetail antlers from a buck shot at night with a $2,000 nightscope on a BAR. They caught that SOB and had his gun on display at the Kansas Bowhunter's convention. Two years ago I found a large buck with antlers sawed off near a field and there was truck tracks nearby. The landowner told me it was a roadkill that proved to be unfit to eat. F&G had given him a salvage tag for it. He cut off the nice antlers and dumped the carcass for the critters. What I'm saying is each situation is different and you usually never know what really happened for that buck to get there. Many times I have found dead deer. Both for myself and others while hunting and also just finding a carcass while in the woods. Bleeding from a wound causes great thirst. Often they go to water and sometimes even die in a creek or pond. While tracking a wounded deer when all else fails I always go to every nearby source of water to check for the animal. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. There is also a photo of a 10 pt bucks skeleton my dog found last Spring while shed hunting. I always have a bloodlight in my truck. Last fall it saved a large doe for a kid when we used it to find his deer after darkness fell. It was the boy's first deer and he was very happy when I tracked down his deer for him. The shot hit a little too far back taking out the liver but not the lungs.

Many 12 ga guns have been blown up when a 20 ga shell was inadvertently dropped in the chamber. It will plug the barrel yet a 12 ga shell will chamber and fire. That is what Elmer Fudd is talking about. A 20 or 28 ga for dove, quail and other small game makes a lot of sense. I shoot a 28 ga O/U and love it. Much easier to carry a 6 lb 28 than an 8 or 9 lb 12 when you walk crop fields and CRP all day. Keep in mind that 28 ga ammo costs much more than 20 ga ammo, but is very cheap to reload. My MEC 9000G cranks out a box of high quality reloads in just a few minutes and greatly mitigates the cost of ammo. If you don't reload the 20 is the way to go. One other thing reloads work great in double guns but not as good in pumps and semi-autos. But I digress, go for the 20 and you will be glad you did.

I carry a small roll of orange surveyor tape. Use it to mark your trail out after field dressing the deer. Leave a used hankerchief to discourage other animals. Once back at the truck I have a Cabela's game cart. It has 2 hard wheels and a rickshah shape. Folds up to take little room in the truck. I have hauled a large buck and a large doe at the same time with mine. Unlike a 4 wheeler you can unload, drag the deer under a fence, reload and continue on. Pick up the trail tapes on the way out or use white toilet paper squares and leave them. This is much easier than any method of dragging (I've done lots of that too).
Deer are browsers and strictly plant eaters.

Rent a car and drive north out of Anchorage on the parks highway. Every few miles the road crosses streams and rivers that team with Salmon and trout. If you don't mind walking you can get away from the crowds. Use quality tackle and cast pink spoons, weighted streamer flies and spinners. You should catch plenty of fish. Don't forget wadders, pepper spray and strong insect repellent. Stop someplace and get a copy of the fishing regs because they vary for each stream. BTW Shipp creek runs right thru Anchorage and has a good run of fish.

Sounds like you clipped one lung and the paunch. That will be a dead deer just needs time to die. If it has been 4 or 5 hours I would search every nearby water source as wounded deer get very thirsty. You may even find him in a pond or stream. Next check the thickest cover around and don't forget a dog would have no trouble finding the deer. hope you find him before he spoils. What kind of broadhead did you use and was the blades sharp?
Here's a good tip for tender duck breast. Cut the filet off each side. It should look kind of like a small ribeye steak. Place each steak on a cutting board and tenderize it with a Jaccard meat tenderizer. They have this tool at Cabelas and the neat thing is it will tenderize a steak yet not change the texture of the meat. The thirty-six tiny sharp blades do not bruise the meat like a mallet or cube steak machine. They just cut the tendons in the muscle that make meat tough. Next marinade and grill. A duck hunter staying in the room next door in a mom and pop motel near Cheyenne bottoms waterfowl refuge showed me this trick. Best duck I have ever tasted.

Today I received a really nice pair of Browning hunting knives and a check from a very good friend you all know. Not sure if he wants me to reveal his name. Some guys wish to be anonymous. What do they need? Well Wesley probably needs more clothes than Jon. He wears XL shirts and jackets which are fairly loose on him. Pants are 40 W and 30 inseam and are loose at that size to give him room to grow. He could use wool cold weather hunting socks to go with the size 10EE insulated leather boots I bought him yesterday. He has a couple camo shirts-one from me and one that came in the mail but he has no parka or jacket. Most of the money has gone for guns, ammo, cleaning gear and hunting stuff. When we went hunting Thursday he wore old sneakers and the only (badly ripped) pair of camo pants he has. We are well stocked on ammo for both guns. I got a deal at Cabelas and bought $100 worth of 22 and 50 cal ML bullets. He has no cold weather gloves or hat that I am aware of. Wish he could wear my size I have a good parka I would give him but it is way too big. If anyone has a good used scope for the Muzzleloader that would really be a big help. Even a fixed power scope would be great. He also needs rings and bases for CVA optima. Can't think of anything else at the moment but think about what you would need if you were just starting out. Thank you again for helping. It's all this help that has gotten us so far so fast.

Crosshairy and the others are giving good advice. Just keep in mind any deer coming in will likely circle down wind to scent check for predators I would place the blind downwind far enough to make a shot on a deer standing by the tree. Also hopefully far enough away to avoid a deer circling behind you. If you are sure you can make a 30 yd shot place it 30 yd downwind and brush it in. Thirty five or 40 yd may even be better if you are comfortable at that range. I take kids hunting in a blind sometimes and they are great for people that cannot be motionless for long periods. We have seen deer come straight in before but mostly they circle down wind so be ready for either one. One other thing with a stand in the wide open spaces you are not likely to see any trophy bucks during daylight hours. Does and small bucks are mostly what you will see.

Marlin xl7 in 30-06 would be hard to beat. Low cost plenty of power, synthetic stock. Bolt guns while not as fast are less likely to jam than levers and semi-autos. I knew a guy that had a 45-70 lever gun jam after he shot a big blackie in Alaska. Good thing he didn't need another shot.

My friend Dan Snowbarger has a small machine that looks kind of like an old reel type mower but it picks up acorns. He collects them every fall and sells them to the state of Missouri. Most years Dan collects several thousand pounds of acorns. They plant the acorns and give the small trees to landowners for planting. many of them go out on Arbor day.
I was moose hunting near Cantwell, AK back in '86 and ran into another hunter that claimed he was attacked by a small pack of wolves. Sound far fetched, he had 3 fresh wolf hides. I have never shot at a running animal more than about 80 yards. There is a mounted 10 pt buck in my basement I shot on the run. One shot broke his shoulder blades and back. He flipped end over end. That said, beyond 80 or so yd too much can happen between the shot and the bullet impact on a running animal. I shot a nice 8 point at 240 yd once while he was moving. Aimed about a foot in front and the bullet broke his back just in front of the hips. I would not try that shot today. It was just luck that it did not turn out to be a gut shot.

Most 30-30's are lever actions with exposed hammers. The only safety is the half-c0ck notch and you can't see what's in the tube magazine. No companies make lever-action youth guns that I can recall. Because of safety they are not the best gun for a beginner. There are several youth model bolt actions that can be loaded like a single shot and have excellent safeties. A 243 or 7mm08 is about as good as it gets cartridgewise accurate, light recoil, plenty power for deer sized game.

Saw (and missed a close running shot) the biggest NT buck in the state of GA on one of the rifle ranges at FT Benning. That range was only open on Chrstmas and Thanksgiving day.
You might as well do this right from the getgo. It will be cheaper in the long run. Go to the Mathews website. There you can locate your nearest mathews Pro-shop. The pro is trained to measure your body and fit a bow to your budget and dimensions. That is why they are only sold at dealers and most folks either have one or wish they did. I have owned many bows in my 45 years of bowhunting and nothing has served me as well as my Mathews. Will never shoot anything else. Yes, I have owned hoyts and Pse's among others in the past. No but if you look at some blanks pay special attention to how the grain runs thru the wrist area of the stock. Also look closely at the grain of the wood. You want dense wood that grew slowing on rocky poor soil. A Walnut tree that grew in rich soil with plenty of water is not as dense, the wood is softer and will not take checkering as well. Also look for tiny cracks in the wood grain that form as the wood dries. I have some black Walnut that has air dried for 20 years. Maybe we can work something out when you come up in Nov.

You can hunt without one (I did for a while) but you can get a good one for about $20 bucks from Bass Pro or Cabela's and it will make your bow a littler more quiet. It also balances the bow and deadens the recoil somewhat. Now that I use one wouldn't be caught dead without it. Can't see any advantage to buying the high priced one's tho. Can't remember the brand name but it has shock rods and comes in 3 lengths. I have the long one they are all the same price. If there is a decent sized stream on the property you can walk the banks until you find where the deer are crossing. This will usually be at a place where water is shallow and banks are not too steep. Place your stand downwind and use available trees, vines, bushes, etc to hide your position from approaching deer. Practice sitting perfectly still by using your eyes instead of mocing your head. Sit there all day be prepared to shoot anytime. Do not hunt there if the wind is wrong. If you can afford it get a Summit climbing stand and use this anytime there is a suitable tree. I did this on Ft Leonard Wood military reservation in 1989. The ground was rocky and covered with leaves so you could not see deer trails. So I just put on my hip boots and waded along a large creek. Found tracks on the banks and later shot my best buck to date at that spot. He had 17 points and now sits over my fireplace.

Isn't the Monster a 2 cam bow built for speed? If so I would recommend the Reeson or one of the other single cam bows. Don't get me wrong Mathews is my all time favorite bow brand. I am just sold on single cam bows. With modern rangefinders speed is not as important as silence, tunability and accuracy. Tree seasons ago I bought a new Switchback XT 60 lb bow and have taken 8 whitetails including 2 ten pt bucks. Also one turkey gobbler with 5 beards. You can click my username and go to photos on my profile page and see pics of most of them. I learned that shooting all the poundage I can hold is not as important as being able to hold at full draw while waiting for that buck to step into a lane. Sixty pounds usually gives me a pass thru with Maxima hunter arrow tiped with Rage 2 blade broadhead. No deer has gone more than 60 yds. Go to a small pro shop is very good advice.

It is well known that I like the Rage 2 blade. It really is like hitting a deer with an axe blade. But regardless of what you choose I would not go under 100 grains weight on your broadhead. You need a little weight up front to maintain a slightly weight forward ballance in your arrow. That seems to result in very accurate arrows for me. Click my name and check the photos of my arrow group. Those are Carbon Express Maxima Hunter arrows with Blazer vanes BTW. I have shot deer with Thunderheads, Wasp Jackhammers and Bear razorheads none of them make a wound that bleeds out like a Rage.

Clay's advice is good but only if your gun is an in-line. That would not be a good idea for a sidelock or flinter. I use 120 grains with a sabot bullet as the accuracy suffers with 150 in my in-line. For my flintlock I use 80 gr Goex 3f black powder and patched round ball. My sidelock gets 80 grains pyrodex on top of 5 grains black to ensure it fires and a patched round ball. I'm sure Clay is thinking in-line but TC also makes side locks and flinters. You did not say which you have. Never had any luck shooting those belted bullets as accuracy sucked.

When I go fishing in Alaska we vacuum seal and freeze the filets. Next pack them in coolers or you can buy insulated boxes in many places up there that will do the job. Now here's the trick. When you fly up pack light and take you clothes and stuff as carry on. Then you can ship 2-50 lb boxes of filets home at no charge. Make sure you weigh them so they are not overweight. My fish has always made it home in great shape with no ice of anykind. When you book your flight go with the fewest plane changes so the baggage apes have less chance to lose your fish.

I am in love with Mathews Bows. That said a 60 lb bow of any brand is all you need to take just about anything. Just use razor sharp broadheads and good arrows. Keep in mind you should be able to draw your bow early when a deer is coming and hold it at full draw until the shot presents itself. Hard to do with a heavy bow.

Please go to Mathews website and use the locator to find your nearest Pro-shop. The pro will be glad to measure you for a bow that fits you. They also have several bows on hand that you can shoot to see how they feel. I guarantee you the pro won't be a joker that gives you bad advice. By all means get good equipment and advice. You will be glad you did and it won't cost you much.http://mathewsinc.com/. It's a lot more fun when you hit what you shoot at and that is much easier with a bow made for you. That's why you can't get a Mathews bow at Walmart, Bass Pro or Cabelas. They make them one at a time to your specific measurements at a very competitive price.

That is the way to go if you want success from the gitgo.

Since switching to Mathews I've taken 8 deer and not had one jump the string yet. My friend Dan got lucky many years ago his first bow kill jumped the string, switched ends before the arrow got there and he still got a killing shot just hit the deer on the opposite side.

When you rest a gun on a hard surface it tends to recoil away from it. The effect is worse if the barrel is in contact with the rest. Other than that many pump guns have a certain amount of flex between the barrel and the action. if the sight is mounted on the receiver instead of a cantilever on the barrel it will never stay zeroed. Been there done that with an Ithaca deerslayer about 30 years ago.
I'm with Clay on this. Take the bow to a proshop. They can measure your draw length and cut the arrows if needed. If you draw an arrow that is too short and try to shoot it you can put an arrow into you bow hand or cut your self pretty bad.

The only call that I personally have seen work is the MADD buck growler. It comes with an instruction dvd and is very easy to use. In the last 2 seasons I have called in and shot two 10 pt bucks with that call. Best to use it when you see a buck in the distance and want to call him closer for a shot. IMO Blind calling educates many deer.
Congratulations, Now don't overdo practice. If you shoot until fatigue sets in you will likely develope bad habits. Better to have frequent short sessions with a limited number of shots. Something like shooting a dozen arrows at a time once or twice a day until your arms and shoulders get toned.

The above is very good advice. I can tear a pieplate up out to 65 yards but a deer is certainly no pie plate. Something else to consider. Is that 40 yard shot at a calm perfectly broadside animal with no obstructions and do you have plenty of time to take the shot. Are you calm and confident you can make that shot? Under less than perfect conditions 30 yds is a long shot. But with ideal conditions 50 may be good if you know you can make the shot.

Heard a guy shoot 5 times just before end of shooting hours and went to investigate. He Saw 2 big bucks come out of a draw. While resting his rifle on a big hay bale he fired and missed. The bucks split up and one ran toward our hero and stopped at 100 yds. Second shot dropped the buck and the joker whooped and ran toward the buck. Old mossyhorns jumped up and ran for the hills and our hero emptied his rifle. I tracked the buck with a lantern until we bumped him and finally convinced the guy and his buddy to back off and come back in the morning. Next AM I bumped him out of his bed and the guy started cranking off 30-06 rounds again. My .50 caliber muzzleloader bullet behind the shoulder dropped the deer. With 10 shots this guy had broken the left front leg and shot off the left rear hoof. There is a photo of the 12 point buck in my photo file on page 4, second pic from the top left of page. Someone gave me a minus on that photo. Maybe he thought I did all the shooting.

from tony167n on 07.13.09

A high shoulder shot will drop a deer on the spot if done right. Most of the time I aim about 1/3 of the way up and right behind the shoulder. That shot gives you the greatest margin for error. If the buck is facing me I aim for the point where the neck enters the chest which either breaks the neck or takes out the heart and lung area.

That's a big difference in bullet weight. The 220's are probably round nosed and the 180 spitzers too. Throw in a hot soda straw barrel and that is what you get. That long bullet might need a faster twist in the rifling. If it doesn't outright tumble it could still be inaccurate.

That will not likely have any impact. Military ammo is made at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. Except for surplus we don't get ammo from there. As far as raw materials such as copper and lead are concerned they don't use enough of the overall supply to have much impact on the price. On the other hand China and India are major reasons for price hikes. Their economies are growing like crazy because they have cheap labor and the liberals are chasing all the manufacturers out of this country with their hairbrained ideas to raise taxes, etc, etc. causing them to move to China, India, malaysia, etc.

Got this from a guy I bought some birds from. If you want them to fly well they must be raised in a large pen so they can test their wings. Also feed and care for them at night and stay away in daylight. If you go around them in daylight it will condition them to avoid contact by running and you want them to fly when you are hunting them. Released birds don't usually survive very long. They are easy prey for predators.

Go to the store and buy some fresh chicken livers (turkey livers are even better if you can find them). Take a sharp knife and cut each liver into 3 pieces careful not to tear the meat. Torn liver is harder to keep on your hook. Tie a wire crappie hook on bare line with no weight. Now gently hook a piece of liver on and carefully toss it out into the pond where water is at least a few feet deep. A crappie pole makes it easy to toss out without slinging the liver off your hook. The liver will gently settle to the bottom in a natural way. Watch for your line to move as a bite signal. I have caught many, many channel cats doing this in public lakes stocked with hatchery raised catfish. I heard that catfish feed has chicken liver in it and they love it. What I know for sure is it works.

We both ran and for reasons known only to God none of them stung me. My friend got stung once on the neck. After things calmed down we was walking along and he suddenly started tearing his clothes off. Turned out a yellow jacket had crawled up his sleeve and waited a while before burying his stinger in my friend's arm. Funny thing, I was talking to Beekeeper on the phone about this very subject and he gave me a heads up about this thread. I agree with Bee on this. Also agree it would be a good idea if they did away with points and went back to what we had before. That would get rid of the incentive to run up point totals.

I've hunted Alaska from an ATV and from horseback. Had no trouble from either. However, I prefer the horse to the sound of a gasoline engine in the wild. The horse is silent except for a snort or fart now and them. You can't hear anything but the motor on an ATV.

Hunting with hounds is a tradition passed down from father to son in states where it is done. You will find that most places that have dog hunting have swamps and thickets that are almost impossible to hunt alone and on foot. The dogs make deer move so that a hunter might get a shot when they cross a clearcut or other open place. I grew up in Fla hunting with hounds and the only deer the dogs ever caught was wounded with a broken leg. One other thing. A deer being chased by hounds knows he his being hunted and is a very alert and difficult target. When you hunt here in the midwest the animal usually doesn't know you are around until the shot. Which do you think is more sporting? I know the success rate here is much better than it was growing up in Fla. hunting with dogs.

My favorite is fresh Chicken livers. Use a very sharp knife to cut each one into 2 or 3 pieces. If you pull or tear them apart it changes the texture and makes it harder to keep on the hook. Turkey livers are better if you can find them because they are tougher. Had good luck with pieces of raw Shrimp also. This stuff doesn't stink like many baits.

Both of the gobblers I have taken with a bow came in the fall while I was deer hunting. When I went turkey hunting in the spring with a bow it didn't go nearly as well. The first bird came walking down a fire trail. Just as he was under the tree I was in saw something he didn't like and ran. I released at 35 yds and my thunderhead decapitated the bird. The other bird was feeding with a flock all around my stand. My arrow pinned him to the ground and other gobblers beat the heck out of him. He had 5 beards that totaled 35 inches of beard. Out of 60 birds these are the only ones taken with a bow.

The 25-06 has it all, light recoil, flat shooting, plenty of energy for deer sized game. I have shot deer with many different calibers from 6mm to 45-70 and 12 guage. All did the job but my favorite is the 25-06 for all the reasons mentioned. Even the legendary Clay Cooper has lauded the 25-06 for deer out so far you need salt bullets. Those above are good but I like the Hodgdon's reloading manual too 'cause they include a huge variety of loads from other powder makers as well as their own. As far as Reloading gear some are as good but IMO none are better than RCBS. Just stay away from the Dillon crap. It's all pot metal and plastic and despite what they claim the customer service stunk the only time I called them. After that all my Dillon stuff went on sale. If you decide to go cheap go with Lee. Lee stuff in my experience works. Just isn't as nice as RCBS.

If you want Halibut I would suggest Glaciers Edge charters out of Seward. NOt only are they good at getting you on Halibut this guy can put you into Salmon and Ling Cod (best eating fish you never heard of). I have personally been out on the Melinda Rose and had a blast. Click my name and at my profile page click on the photos and go to page 6 that was a day of silver salmon fishing on the Melinda Rose. This guy is so good other boats followed us around looking for fish. We released many fish. Nobody out there caught them like we did. I would suggest you stay at Box canyon cabins they are really nice and the price is good by AK standards. Want to save money? If you have a military ID card you can stay at the Seward Military recreation area but book very early. For Halibut only Homer is very good but when I did a search for Cpt Mike's Charters nothing came up. The Halibut pics in my file came from his boat the Beausileaux. Beware not all charter operators are good. Some will take you out and bring you back as soon as you pull in a couple small Halibut. The best go far out into the gulf and release small fish until each person has a couple nice keepers(see photos) The daily limit is 2 Halibut so you want them to weight at least 30 lb or more. If you have more questions feel free to ask I lived there for 3.5 years http://www.glaciersedge.net/our_boat.html

The thing to do is google mathews and find your nearest dealer. Go there and let them measure you properly and set up the bow. Get yourself a Coffeebean bag. They are very large extra-heavy duty burlap. Fill with old rags or used plastic wrap packed in tightly. I just throw one or two in the back yard at different ranges and fire away. They will take thousands of shots and cost virtually nothing. Bought my bags for $2.00 each in London but I'm sure you could find them here in the US. In 3 years of shooting I have yet to miss a bag. The most critically acclaimed movie with hunting in it is probably "Out of Africa" with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. I read the book and it is a very good read. Karen Blixen the central character (and a real person) really did shoot lions and other game. Way back in the day when men were men, etc. You might say she was a regular "Bella" with guns. Ghost and the Darkness is pretty good too. You really can see the lions of Tsavo at the Field Museum in Chicago. Been there done that. Col Patterson sold the skins to the museum back in the forties.

That's a very personal choice. For me a 12 has been the gun for most of my shooting until about 12 years ago I bought a 28 guage O/U and I love the thing for upland hunting. If had to do again I would consider the 20 simply because ammo is much cheaper than 28's. If you are recoil sensitive go with the small gun. If not keep in mind the 12 will work on almost anything including big game.

It is real I was a teenager working in Mims Florida just across the Indian River from Cape Canaveral in the late 60's. Watched all the Apollo rockets launch. You gotta see that to believe just how loud and powerful. Makes a jet plane seem not so bad. From 20 miles away the ground shook like an earthquake. You could see the rocket climb many miles and even see the stages drop off. My nephew has been with NASA for 30 years now. It happened and the men that did are real heros. The day Challenger blew up I was watching on tv and told the wife it blew up even as the talking head on tv was still talking as if all was well. These folks that claim it never happened are likely from the same crowd that claim the earth is flat and Hitler did nothing to the Jewish people.

Please send anything you wish to donate to 2311 W. Sage Circle, Olathe, KS. He could use a bow sight and stabilizer, but really needs a release and arrows. I plan to buy more arrows when the tent sells. BTW I called Wesley's mom yesterday and learned that Wes took a bad fall and cracked his pelvis. The kid is in a wheelchair for now and scheduled to have a pin inserted. Dr. said he will be out of commission for a few weeks.

I have owned most of the above at one time or another. All are nice rifles but my favorite is a Kimber mdl 8400 classic in 25-06. They run a little over a 1000 but you get really nice wood and a trigger that is excellent. Think pre-64 modl 70 winchester updated and with better wood. It's not only a good hunting rifle you never get tired of holding and admiring your baby. I have seen these new in box for under $1000 on Gunbroker.com. Bought mine at Cabela's when I had a coupon for $150 worth of accessories. Used that for dies, brass and bullets.

I've shot about 30-40 deer in Fla, Al and GA with a 12 guage using buckshot and slugs. The 20 is fine with slugs but with buckshot it is a major handicap. If shots are more than 60 yds use slugs in either gun period. If you can handle a 12 that is the way to go IMO.

Dip a bore brush in Barnes CR-10 and run it thru your bore. repeat acouple times until it is well coated. Let it sit fifteen minutes and clean with dry patches. Repeat if needed then lightly lube with Clemzoil or another good lube.. Wash the CR-10 off your cleaning gear it is hard on anything copper or bronze. If it is really bad wrap a patch around your bore brush and coat it with J&B bore paste. Then run it thru your bore 30 times. Cleans like a white tornado.

In the last 25 years or so several turkey guns and I have crossed paths. There was the Browning auto-5 3 inc magnum in full choke, a mossberg pump, a Remington Mdl 11 2 3/4" full choke, a Browning Stalker 10 ga pump and last a Benelli SBE. My friend Billy has a single shot 10 that he fancied up just for turkeys yet the last couple years he has been shooting his old 1100 Remington. The thing about a Semi-auto is it gives you a fast second shot without having to move. Many times I've seen turkeys not run at the shot but if you move as in working a pump they won't miss that. Here in KS we can shoot 2 birds in the same day so a fast 2nd shot can be a factor. Anyway my Benelli shoots even farther than the 10 guage and does not kick nearly as bad. Heck, recoil from the SBE is like a maiden's kiss compared to that 10 guage pump. That thing was BRUTAL with 2 1/4 oz turkey loads.

Based on observation probably sometime in August. By then they are about as large as they will get and the antlers harden into bone the last month or so. You can get a nice Browning Citori or a Beretta in that price range. Both are nice guns. Brownings are a little heavier which will somewhat dampen the effect of recoil. Beware of used trap guns. They usually look real nice because they haven't been in the woods. Unfortunately many of them have been fired many thousands of times and so the insides are well worn. What I'm saying is don't buy a used gun without having it checked out by a gunsmith.

Yes but actually the 30 refers to the diameter of the bore between the lands. The bullet is designed to fill the groves and is actually .308 inch in diameter. Thst is why the 308 Win is the same caliber as the 30-06 but is named the 308. Hope that helps clear it up.
I prefer a 3.5 inch autoloading shotgun. It gives the most range and you have an instant followup shot(s). Mine is a SBE that has been Parkerized flat green. It is deadly way out there with high-density loads. The choke tube is x-full extended Comp-n-choke. I shot a bird 64 yds with it. He had 4 #6 pellets in his head. I thought he was about 55 yds which is what I consider my limit. Can't argue with bang flop-no bird has walked or flew away after a shot with that gun.

For high numbers of mature bucks great trophy potential, plenty of land to hunt on I have to go with Northeast Missouri. Five years ago they got Quality deer management and it works great. Bucks must have 4 one inch points on one antler to be legal. There's a reason the magazines picked Kirksville, MO as a #1 deer hunting destination. The rifle season is about 10 days long and is during the rut. Only downside is NR tags just went up again to 225 bucks. Don't know how long I will continue to pay. This area is just south of the Iowa border. Iowa has huge deer but it's expensive. Last year I took a guy from Georgia hunting near Kirksville, MO and he shot the buck of his dreams.

As seasons change so does the favored food. In Kansas Alfalfa, Milo and Soybeans are hot during the Sep-Oct. Next they start hitting corn and after a heavy freeze winter wheat is the only green forage left and deer eat the heck out of it. There's also hunting pressure and the quality of security cover changes as the leaves fall.

Q:Where is the best place to find the really big buck and in what kind of terrain?
from littledeer on 02.13.09

In the areas I hunt (East KS and North MO) the no 1 place to look for big bucks is Cedar thickets. When the leaves are off everything else Cedar is still green and thick. Cedar is also my favorite tree for a stand if I can find one big enough. They have a strong but pleasant scent that might mask human scent and the limbs cover your outline. Deer never seem to bust me when I hunt from a Cedar tree. The 10 point I shot in 07 with my bow came out of a cedar thicket. My days off from work ar Wed and Thur so I can hunt when most others can't.

Either will do the job but bullistic tips have a slightly higher bullistic coeficient which means they will hold their velocity better and give you a slightly flatter trajectory. This only matters if you shoot long range. The deer won't know the difference.

It is probably illegal to kill an Otter thia time of the year. I would use a live trap and bait it with fresh fish. If you catch the Otter take hime to a river or lake and release him.
Idahooutdoors has it exactly right. However there are breeds out there that were bred for coonhunting. Check out Redbones, Blueticks, and Black & Tans. My dad always had Black & tans and Blueticks. They made excellent coon dogs. Beagles are mainly rabbit dogs and Walkers are great for Coyote, Fox and Deer.
Generally it's the size that patterns the best. Meaning a nice tite pattern with no holes in it. Shot size in turkey loads range from #4 to #7 1/2 in lead or high density loads. My favorite is #6 high density. Not only does high density pattern better than lead it carries more energy per pellet. At long range #6 lead may pattern well but not have enough energy to penetrate sufficiently for an instant kill. It you like bang-flop kills use high density turkey loads. They are expensive, but you only need a handfull if you don't take risky shots.
My dad showed me the beekeeper method when i was a kid in the 1950's. You will get less hair on the meat that way.

Upland game 28 ga. #6 or 7 1/2 shot. Late season Pheasant 12 ga #6 or #4 shot depending on whether quail is a possibility. For turkey I use 3.5 ich Rem high density #6 shot turkey loads. They are expensive but a handfull will last a long time and they kill like no other ammo.

Hunters in Alaska tend to use big rifles for sitka BT deer because the deer live in Brown bear country. I have shot several with a 350 Rem mag. and 250 grain bullets. They make a nice clean hole all the way thru at any angle. They don't blow up and waste a whole quarter of meat like I have seen with a 257 Wby.

Looked at PSE before buying my Mathews and was not impressed. Fit and finish is better on Mathews. They are also very smooth. With modern rangefinders Speed is not as important as being smooth and quiet. I went from PSE to Hoyt then to Mathews. Unlike with the others, I never had a deer jump the string with my Switchback XT.

Shane and Clay are exactly right on that one. You need a better gun or a rib (costs more than the gun) to give you a better sight plane. Aiming most single shots are like looking down a ski slope. Practice shooting skeet it's much cheaper than clays. AND always keep you eye on the "bird" and don't try to aim the shot. If you do you will shoot behind every one of them.

Q:Do you kill the deer that are spikes off your land? i hear they dont grow past a spike.
from hunterkid94 on 06.21.09

Spikes are generally 1 1/2 year old bucks. In my experience matouse3 is correct about young buck's antlers. Keep in mind some doe are not bred until December. Either because they are young or the local buck to doe ratio is not good. Those doe have their fawns a month later and consequently the fawn has less time to grow antlers. Also local nutrition and genetics are involved. However, I have seen several bucks that were obviously 2 1/2 or older with only large spike antlers. IMO Those bucks should be shot and not allowed to pass on their genes. Here in Kansas with all the good food and excellent buck to doe ratio I rarely see spikes. Most 1 1/2 Kansas bucks I see have at least forks and small 8 point racks are common. If you let young spikes walk IMO it will be better for your deer herd. Most will eventually have nice antlers.

Go to the spice section in the grocery store and get a bottle of oil of anise. It is the flavoring in black licorice candy and bears love the stuff. When I lived in Ak the stores was always sold out in the spring and summer 'cause of bear hunters. You can put this stuff in a spray bottle and spray it around or use a scent wick. They also love the smell to cooking bacon. One of my AK buds got his brownie when it came to the smell of breakfast cooking.

I carry a good set of binos no matter what I'm hunting. They would be especially handy for Mulies. Just get the best you can afford. I bought a used set of Swarovski 8X compacts on Ebay and love them. Saved about $500. Next you need a good flat shooting rifle with a quality scope and rings. A bolt gun in 25-06 would be excellent for the job. Plan on doing lots of glassing. Look for parts of deer not whole deer. Look for horizontal lines, black noses and small patches of white or antler tines. When you spot a nice buck sneak close enough for a shot and take careful aim. A rangefinder would be mighty handy also.

Wear total camouflage even hands and face. Always try to sit with your back to a large tree. It gives you a backrest and also protects your back from being shot by an idiot. Sit on a nice thick cushion so you son't get too uncomfortable in 10-15 minutes Try to always sit in the shadows/shade birds will bust you much faster in the sunshine. Try to find a spot where you can see to shoot and the bird will be in range when you see him. Be very still and always assume there is a bird out there looking for that hen (you) that you can't see. I guarantee you far more birds see you than you see them. Use a good pair of binoculars. If you hear a bird and decide to sneak closer understand you must stay completely out of sight to have any chance for success. Be patient, be very patient. It may take him 30 min to get curious and decide to wander over and visit that hen. Don't call too much. If necessary time yourself-2 sets of 3-7 yelps spaced 10 seconds apart every 10 minutes is usually plenty. People that call lots thinking more is better don't eat much wild turkey breast (unless you are one of my friends I gave him a bird haha). When you have to move do it s-l-o-w-l-y and if a gobbling bird is coming in aim the shotgun where you expect him to appear BEFORE he comes over the hill. When you are confident he is in range and the gun is on him wait for him to raise his head then shoot at the place where skin and feathers meet (about center of neck). I have recently posted several stories about birds taken this year and in past years. There are some tips in those stories. Suggest you read them and go hunting every chance you get. You can find them by clicking my username, going to my profile page and looking thru "answers" and "comments". Hope this helps. Beekeeper has a wealth of knowledge if you can get him away from his bees.
The best turkey loads are without a doubt the premium loads made by several companies that contain high density shot. HD patterns better than lead in any gun. That is some good advice from Shane and GS but you asked what is the best LOAD. My experence comes from shooting lots of turkey loads at different ranges. HD is expensive but you won't use many shells. For example in the last 10 years I have taken 28 birds with 30 shots. (the misses was with lead and one was a fall bird in the air) HD gives you an extra margin for error in range estimation. Also with HD #6 shot has sufficent energy to make larger shot unnecessary unless it patterns better in your particular gun.
I agree with all the above. Here in KS after the main rut we hunt food sources especially winter wheat. It's the only green food that late in the season and a real deer magnet. Bucks will bed in any cedar thicket that is within walking distance too. Find a remote wheat field with good cover nearby and you will find deer everytime.

Ultracoat is a ceramic based solution that you coat the bore with. It's measured in microns, does not effect accuracy, pressure or velocity. It does protect from rust and greatly reduces fouling especially lead and copper fouling. John Barsness wrote the instuctions that comes with the kit. You have to clean your barrel very well before you coat it. More info at www.ultacoatingsinc.com. It really shines with muzzleloaders and BP cartridge guns. I can now fire a string of shots with my Sharps 45-70 without cleaning between shots when using BP loads. It's also sold at mack's Prairie Wings (waterfowl hunting catalog). I use it on just about everything. Coated my wife's glass top stove-now burnt stuff won't stick. It is impervious to heat up to 2000 degrees.

I would hate to feed the family with only a spear. However, no doubt wild animals back then did not fear man as much as they do today. I mean in Alaskan wilderness the Grouse barely get out of your way. Alaskans kill them with a rock, stick or 22 revolver. I posted a pick of one sitting in a Spruce tree only about 10 feet from the camera. When I was a kid growing up in Florida my dad was a bulldozer operator. He cleared land for Citrus groves, cattle pasture, etc. Dad always had a ball peen hammer on the crawler and would throw it to kill rabbits. One day he brought home a giant bull frog bagged with the hammer. The legs was the size of chicken legs and (once fried)too tough to chew. Another time riding a tractor to feed cattle the old man stopped, pulled out his 38 special and (1 shot) killed a quail that was running in front of the tractor. I was there, the quail was delicious. We also ate lots of turtles, fish and other game.

If you have a gun for the job and the skill to make the shot of course it is. My longest shot on a buck was a 1 shot bang flop on a 7 pt with a 270 win at 355 measured yds. The most difficult was a big 8 pt buck walking on a hardwood covered ridge at 242 yd. Just had time for 1 shot with 6mmX284 win wildcat. But then I've done so much shooting I can't hear too well anymore. Probably should not have taken that last shot but had to think fast as he was getting away.

Yes, but there are many better rounds out there for deer hunting. Like driving with your knees. you could do it but it doesn't mean it's a good idea. A 243, 25-06, 6mm Rem,7mm08 or 25 06 would be a better compromise for deer and varmints.

Clay, I noticed the same thing about the 30 yd pin working on steep angle shots. I shoot a 62 lb Mathews and have taken 8 deer with it in the last 3 years. Could have taken several more. With rangefinders you don't need a flat shooting bow. Whats more important is silence, accuracy and the ability to hold at full draw a long time without the shakes. You draw when the head is down or behind a tree then wait at full draw for a shot. Works great for me.

What state do you live in? All the above is good advice. Just keep in mind you can't move when an alert bird is in sight. Wait until his head is behind something to move your gun. Some birds come in silent but if he comes in Gobbling have your gun up and pointed where you expect him to appear. Many birds do not come straight in they like to circle and sometimes pop up where you don't expect so always be still. Another trick is to practice aiming your gun lefthanded. Then when he comes in on your right you can switch the gun to your left shoulder when his head is down and kill him. Learned this after I lost a bird that way.

I agree with Smitty and most of my hunting is in Kansas and Missouri. Look for the buck to leave a track in his fresh scrape. That track will give you an idea of his size. If you do decide to set up near a scrape place your stand downwind. For the Missouri firearms opener scrape hunting is worthless on public land. That is the time to hunt escape trails and cover.

Put it in a place with good cover and hang a trail cam about 10 ft away aimed 2 feet above the lick. That will get you pics of most of your local deer. They will pretty much stop hitting it in Sep. I used this method to get trailcam pics of the 10 pt buck in my photo.
Buckhunter is right about feeders and keeping deer around. The big 10 pt in my profile came to a grunt call from a thicket 150 yd from a feeder. I would hunt over a feeder if hunting just for meat. A big buck would not mean much to me if he was shot over bait. Last fall I placed a trailcam over a feeder and got pics of 3 ten pointers and 2 eights in only 2 days. All came in at night. Plenty of doe and fawns came in during daylight. They almost always come in from downwind and with great caution. My state has too many deer in some areas and many doe need to be shot to get numbers down. Feeders help with that. It's not hunting really it's shooting but necessary.

I use apples in the fall when deer aren't hitting minerals. Deer love them. Make sure baiting is legal in your area. I don't hunt over them just place camera to see if there are any monsters in the area. They usually come in at night.

I used the 85 gr. part. in my 6mmX284 Win loaded to 3400 fps. Shot 7 deer with that load. Most died in their tracks. None ran more than a few yards. They tend to enter, mushroom violently and exited on all but a chest shot buck. That bullet penetrated to his rear after completely destroying the heart and lungs. I've also used the 100 gr 25-06 with good results but they did not do as much internal damage as the hot 6mm.

All the above is good advice but you don't see many pumps on the skeet range. Those doubles come mighty fast to be working a pump. Mossberg probably makes the best entry level over and under. After that Beretta and Browning make nice guns for more $. I have owned and shot both. And of couse there is the Rem 1100, Benelli and Baretta semi-autos all get the job done. Stoeger sounds like a good deal.

The most I've taken in one year was 6. Done that twice but some years did not deer hunt at all because was overseas in the army etc. The total is(I think) around 70 or 80 whitetails, Sitka BT's and 1 mulie. I haven't really named any guns.
Just about any good vest will do. Bought mine on sale at Cabela's. Can't remember the brand. Read everything you can get on turkey hunting. Keep in mind the pros you see are all selling something and they tend to overcall. Films have a lot of non-productive time edited out. When you set up hunt that spot at least 30 minutes. Be patient, I worked one old bird 3 hours before dropping the hammer. They also put way too much importance on the brand or type of call. One good box call you can use well will bring a lot of turkeys in if you do everything else correctly. Learn what a good place to set up looks like. Learn to sit very still. If you have to move do it in very slow motion. If a bird is in sight don't move until his head is down or behind a tree. Always carry a good pair of binoculars. Use them to glass fields and clearings for birds that only have their heads showing. Nothing takes the place of experience so spend time in the turkey woods and observe their behavior. Want to see some birds click my username and browse thru the photos in my photofile.

I am very fond of the VX III line. Never had one fail me yet and they have really been put to the test. I still have and use a 25 year old 1 3/4-5X that I used all over Alaska. IMHO most folks go with too much power which makes it harder to find your target quickly in the scope. For big game 2X-7X is plenty. I did put a 3.5-10 on my 25-06 but that was for a special situation where long shots are the norm. It's my favorite deer stand overlooking a large pasture. Most shots are 300 or more yds. My longest 1 shot kill so far is 355.

Are you shooting from a rock solid rest at a 100 yard target? Have a friend load your gun for you behind your back and tell him to skip a round. When you shoot on an empty chamber it will really tell if you are flinching. The gun will click and you will jump expecting recoil when there is none. If you aren't flinching and all the screws are tight take a good look at the barrel crown with a magnifier. Check for imperfections. None of that works call Savage. I sent my Kimber back to the factory because of a small chamber flaw and they re-barreled it at no cost.

I like a blind in a large grassy marsh so I can see far off birds. Also while we're at it give me lots of ice with an open hole in front of the blind. Nothing prettier than a flight of Mallards with landing gear down. One time down at Marais De Cygne KS I was laying on my back in some grass at waters edge about half asleep. Decoys on a nearby hole in the ice. It was sunny, cold with a light wind. I heard a hissing sound overhead and opened my eyes. Straight up there was about 100 Mallards and Pintails in a corkscrew spiral dropping. The sound was their wings locked and whistling as they dropped. Got my limit 5 straight days on that hole.

Thanks Reid, Here's the deal. My 25-06 is a Kimber 8400 classic and has a light barrel. After 10 shots the barrel is too hot to handle. Not good for varmints like PD's. I need a heavy barrel. I don't own a 6mm any more and they are also legal for deer hence the idea of a heavy barreled varmint gun in that caliber. I'm leaning toward the 22-250 right now. from alpettibone on 03.05.09

Give yourself plenty of time between arrows. Shoot each one as if it is the only arrow you are going to shoot today. After all when you hunt your goal should be to get it all done with one shot. Shooting after you begin to tire will result in your developing back habits. A dozen or 2 is plenty. Use weights to strengthen the arm muscles used in bow shooting.
Be careful Buckhunter I know of a guy that was shot on private land by a trespasser that thought he was a Turkey. That load of #4 shot in the back and neck hurt that old man bad. I have killed 2 Gobblers with a bow both while deerhunting. One had 5 beards that total 35 inches. You can see the pic in my photos by clicking my username. Looks like 1 huge beard but is actually 5. Killing a Turkey with a bow is extremely difficult in most cases. By far your best chance is to use a blind to conceal your draw. Do not take long shots. The kill zone is about the size of a softball. Miss that and lose the bird to the coyotes.

Find a bottleneck and set up downwind with good shooting lanes. Another favorite is a stream with high banks and few places to cross. Got my 17 pointer at just such a place. If you are hunting near a food source scout well to find where deer are entering the field. The best buck will almost always enter last, maybe after dark. To get him you need a stand on the trails he is using and you must not alert any of the early arriving doe's or the jig will be up. The best way to keep them from smelling you is to stay downwind of any deer.
Bluegrass made many good points. I always have a locking cable on my lock-on stands but given a choice (meaning a good tree) I will use my Summit Goliath everytime. It's much more comfortable and so safe I can sleep in it. IMO a wise old buck will avoid permanent stands. I don't have any scientific evidence but most of my deer have been taken from the climber. Some of that could simply be that I stay longer in the comfortable stand. About 3 or 4 hours is all I can take in a lock-on stand. By then my back and legs are "barking" pretty bad. Another plus for the climber, height is not limited by the ladder or number of tree steps you carry and my preference is to get 20-25 feet high. However, we have plenty of Cedar trees in the mid-west and if you can find one big enough to hold a stand they are the best tree to be had concerning concealment. Cedars are very aromatic (cover scent) and the thick foliage hides your outline very well. The only problem is you have to use a lock-on stand. Sorry The Goliath is just too much for me to lug up into a tree. Here's a tip. If your area holds little cover after the leaves fall. You will undoubtably find the largest bucks in Cedar thickets.

That is why I let many deer walk every fall. A few years ago that very thing happened to me. Shot a nice 9 pointer and at the shot an even bigger buck jumped out of the brush. I had to let him go didn't even consider shooting that buck. I feel there is a percentage of game wardens that become jaded. I know a couple police officers that hunt and even they feel upset with some game wardens. One guy a LT in the KS Highway Patrol shot and tagged a doe on land he had hunted for 20 years. A warden checked him and was going to charge him with trespassing on his friend's farm because he didn't have written permission in his pocket. He had to call the landowner to get the warden off his back. No professional courtesy at all. Written permission is the law in KS but I don't know anyone that always has it in their pocket but me.
Q:what is your favorite live bait for trout (i.e. waxworms, butterworms, nightcrawlers)?

Get a clean hypodermic needle from a diebetic friend. Hook a nice fat 'Crawler on a rig with a 12" leader with a sliding sinker above it. insert the needle into the worm and inject some air. Don't worry the worm won't die. When you thow this out the worm will float above the moss & mud on the bottom and wiggle thus becoming much easier for a Trout to see. I watched an old guy hauling them in one day at a local lake while others caught nothing and this is what he was doing. I did it and caught a 6 pounder. Give me a few and I will post the pic. Just click my name and then click on my pics.

I don't know for sure but I do know that elephant and rhino both have thick skin. John Taylor said his natives love Giraffe skin for footgear. I'm going with the obvious choice Rhino but something tells me it might not be correct.
